The name of Cape Chikyu is said to have originated from “chikepu” meaning “cliff” in the Ainu language, which became “chikiu” and then “chikyu”. The cape is lined with cliffs of about 100m high, and on clear days, the observation deck offers a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, making it one of Japan’s most scenic spots. It also won first place in the “Hokkaido’s Top 100 Natural Sites”, “Hokkaido’s Scenic Spots as Selected by You”, and “New Japan Tourist Sites Top 100 – Young Couples Category”, and the Cape Chikiu Lighthouse was selected as one of Japan’s “Top 50 Lighthouses” and “Civil Engineering Heritage Sites Selected by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers”, making it one of Japan’s most popular tourist and scenic spots.
