On March 27, 2026, news broke that the master of the manga world, Yoshiharu Tsuge, had passed away.
It turns out he departed this world on March 3—just a few days after I had visited the Yugoya Ryokan. Although I only began reading his works last year, my fascination with rustic, secluded inns stems directly from my discovery of Yoshiharu Tsuge’s art. In fact, my recent visit to this particular inn was the very first time I had intentionally sought out a lodging specifically because of its connection to him. Upon hearing the news, I was overcome with emotion and felt compelled to hastily put together this video.
I would like to dedicate this video as a tribute of gratitude to Mr. Tsuge for sharing his magnificent body of work with the world. It is my sincere hope that his art will continue to shine ever brighter, captivating the hearts of many for generations to come.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Yugoya Ryokan in Futamata Onsen, located in Ten-ei Village, Fukushima Prefecture.
Futamata Onsen is a historic hot spring district boasting a thousand-year legacy; legend has it that the site was first settled—and the hot springs discovered—by refugees of the Heike clan.
It is also a renowned hot spring destination, famously featured in the story *Futamata Keikoku* (Futamata Gorge) by the legendary manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge. The Yugoya Ryokan is the very inn where Tsuge stayed—the establishment that served as the real-life model for his work. When the second-generation proprietor—who had managed the inn until 2003—fell ill, the business was taken over by a group of four hot spring enthusiasts. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, one of these individuals, Mr. Takahagi, has single-handedly managed the operations. The inn now features a newly constructed main building alongside a cluster of traditional bathhouses that retain their historical charm—a blend designed to allow more people to experience this unique setting. To this day, it continues to operate as an exclusive retreat, accepting only one group of guests at a time and remaining unlisted on major online booking platforms.
The Futamata Onsen depicted by Yoshiharu Tsuge was a hot spring district left behind by the rapid economic development of the era—a place that retained a rustic, humble, and somewhat dilapidated appearance. Amidst this setting, the Yugoya Ryokan emerged as the central subject—reputed to be the oldest inn in the district. It is said that Tsuge first visited Futamata Onsen in 1967 (Showa 42), was deeply moved by the experience, and subsequently returned for regular visits. It was during this period that he created *Futamata Keikoku*—one of his most celebrated masterpieces. As this is a literary work, I will refrain from offering a detailed synopsis; however, this piece—in which the author’s unique sensibility truly explodes—continues to captivate countless hot spring enthusiasts to this day, alongside his other works. During a recent visit back to Japan, I took the opportunity to stay at this inn—one of the few surviving establishments that Yoshiharu Tsuge actually visited during his travels—and thoroughly savored the experience.
For over fifty years since Yoshiharu Tsuge’s visit, this bathhouse inn has remained virtually unchanged. Upon my arrival, I could only utter a single word: “Magnificent.” It was a truly luxurious two-day retreat, during which I had the entire place all to myself. I was also deeply moved by the dedication and passion Mr. Takahagi pours into preserving this historic inn, making for a truly wonderful stay.

I stayed here with my family in December. It was a truly magical, unforgettable experience. Strongly recommended for anybody holidaying in Japan.
