北海道幌延町。サロベツ湿原の南端に位置する下サロベツ原野。
サロベツの風に吹かれて「幌延町・7つの秘境駅めぐり」の旅
サロベツ湿原は、約6,700ヘクタールという日本最大級の広さを誇る高層湿原。数千年の時をかけて積み重なった「泥炭」の層が、ここでしか見られない貴重な生態系を守っています。
その広大な自然の中に佇むのが、JR宗谷本線の「下沼駅」です。 1926年の誕生から100年近い歴史を持ち、1984年の無人化以降は、かつて貨物列車で使われていた「ヨ3500形車掌車」を改造した「ダルマ駅」として愛されてきました。
2017年には廃止の危機に直面しましたが、地元の熱意により存続が決定。 駅の妖精「ぬまなん」が描かれたポップな外観や、木材の温もり溢れる待合室の内部、そして地元の方々が手入れする美しい花壇など、単なる駅を超えた「地域の宝箱」のような場所です。
1日に数本しか列車が止まらない、まさに秘境駅にふさわしいダイヤ。
最果ての地に眠る、美しくも力強い物語。
