🚂 D51形724号機は、1943年に日立製作所で製造された貨物用蒸気機関車で、全国で活躍した「デゴイチ」の一員です。戦中・戦後の厳しい輸送事情の中で力強い牽引力を発揮し、日本海縦貫線を中心に長岡や酒田の機関区で多くの貨物列車を支えてきました。
生涯の走行距離は約205万キロに達し、これは地球をおよそ51周するほどの長い距離です。白い蒸気を上げながら渋川駅にもその姿を見せ、市民の暮らしや産業を支える重要な役割を果たしました。
1971年に現役を退いたのち、この地に保存され、地域の歴史を伝える貴重な文化遺産として親しまれています。戦時製の特徴や雪国仕様の装備が残されており、当時の鉄道輸送の姿を今に伝える大切な機関車です。

🚂 The D51 No. 724 is a freight steam locomotive built in 1943 by Hitachi, and is one of the well‑known “Degoichi” class engines that operated throughout Japan. During the difficult years of World War II and the postwar period, it provided powerful traction and played an essential role in freight transport, particularly along the Japan Sea coastal route, serving the locomotive depots of Nagaoka and Sakata.
Over its lifetime, the locomotive ran approximately 2.05 million kilometers—equivalent to circling the Earth about 51 times. It was a familiar sight at Shibukawa Station, where its billowing white steam supported the daily lives and industries of the region.
After retiring from service in 1971, the locomotive was preserved at this site. With its wartime construction features and cold‑region equipment still intact, D51 No. 724 remains a valuable cultural asset that conveys the history of Japan’s railway transportation.
