Real Mount Sinai: The Forgotten Mountain of God

The true Mountain of God—also known as Horeb or Mount Sinai—has been debated for millennia. Its location faded from memory, lost to time and tradition. Emperor Constantine, influenced by his mother Queen Helena, moved the Roman Empire under Christian rule. Inspired by pagan cultures and idolatry, Helena built monuments at biblical sites. One such site was claimed to be the location of the burning bush and Mount Sinai. Though she never visited the land, she declared it to be in the Egyptian peninsula. For centuries, no one questioned her—so this became the accepted location.

But this traditional site doesn’t match the Bible’s description, making it difficult to piece together the archaeological record. Because of the lack of evidence, many began to doubt the Exodus itself. Traditions and translation errors led scholars away from the truth. Over time, the miraculous work of Yahweh became metaphor instead of history.

To rediscover truth, we must return to the written Word of God. The Bible clearly identifies a region near the Gulf of Aqaba, part of the Red Sea along the coast of Saudi Arabia:
“And King Solomon made a navy of ships in Ezion-Geber, which is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea [Yam Suph], in the land of Edom…” (1 Kings 9:26)
Ezion-Geber, mentioned six times in the Old Testament, was on the north coast of the Gulf of Aqaba.

Why, then, is this location forgotten? The prophet Isaiah, in the 7th century BCE, rebuked God’s people for adopting pagan ways and forgetting His holy mountain. In Hebrew, “forgetting” also means abandoning what occurred there—the covenant with God.

After exile, rebuilding the temple became the focus. Sinai became symbolic. Its location faded.

But now, archaeological attention has turned to the ancient land of Midian, across the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. There, locals have long called a certain peak the mountain of Moses. That mountain—Jebel al-Lawz—was once off-limits. But in 2019, Saudi Arabia opened the region to tourism.
