沖縄戦のさなか、南風原町・黄金森の丘には約30もの壕が張り巡らされ、傷ついた兵士たちの治療が行われていました。
なかでも 20号壕 は、手術室や病室が設けられ、ひめゆり学徒たちが必死に看護にあたった場所。暗く湿った壕の中に足を踏み入れると、高さ・幅わずか約1.8mの空間が、当時の過酷さを静かに物語ります。
1990年には全国で初めて「町文化財（戦争遺跡）」に指定され、2007年からは一般公開がスタート。壕内の空気、湿度、再現された“におい”まで、戦時下の医療現場のリアルを五感で感じられる貴重な場所です。
周辺には「鎮魂と平和の鐘」など慰霊の場も点在し、祈りと記憶を未来へ受け継ぐ静かな空気が流れています。
歴史に触れ、平和について考える旅に。一度は訪れてほしい“沖縄戦を知る重要なスポット”です。

During the Battle of Okinawa, nearly 30 underground caves were dug into the hills of Koganemori in Haebaru Town and used as medical shelters.Among them, Cave No. 20 served as an operating room and ward, where the Himeyuri student nurses desperately cared for the wounded.
Stepping inside the dark, humid tunnel—only about 1.8 meters high and wide—you can feel the harsh reality of wartime medical conditions.Designated in 1990 as Japan’s first municipal cultural property (war site) and opened to the public in 2007, the cave allows visitors to experience the atmosphere, humidity, and even the recreated smells of a wartime field hospital.
Around the site stand memorials such as the Bell of Repose and Peace, creating a quiet space where prayers and memories continue to be passed on.
A meaningful stop for anyone seeking to understand the Battle of Okinawa—and to reflect on peace.
