PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE BOOKING
Ogoto Onsen is a serene hot spring retreat located on the western shores of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, just 20 minutes north of Kyoto. This resort area is famous for its hot spring waters that leave skin incredibly smooth.
Ogoto Onsen serves as the perfect, tranquil alternative to staying in the crowded heart of Kyoto, allowing travelers to experience authentic luxury ryokans with stunning lake views and exquisite kaiseki dining while remaining close enough for easy sightseeing.
HOW TO GET TO OGOTO ONSEN FROM KYOTO
Simply take the JR Kosei Line from Kyoto Station (heading towards Tsuruga); the ride to Ogoto-onsen Station takes just about 20 minutes. Once you arrive, keep in mind that most ryokans are located along the lakeshore rather than right next to the tracks. Therefore, almost every major hotel operates a complimentary shuttle service from the station. Thus, you should have your hotel’s number handy, as you usually need to give them a quick call upon arrival to request the pickup.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:
1. It is highly recommended to book a room with breakfast when staying in Ogoto Onsen. The area has several restaurants (more than average onsen towns, but most open late and close early, making the hotel’s breakfast a convenient and reliable choice.
Regarding dinner (and breakfast in some hotels), it is essential to arrive at your hotel’s restaurant on time. If you are significantly late, the hotel may refuse to serve you, even if you have already paid for the meal.
3. As with many other destinations in Japan, most public onsens do not permit tattoos. If you wish to enjoy a hot spring experience, it’s best to book accommodations that offer private onsens for a more comfortable and relaxing soak.
4. When booking accommodation in Ogoto Onsen, it’s important to note that some traditional Japanese rooms feature futon bedding laid directly on tatami mats. While this can be a unique and authentic experience, futons may not be suitable for elderly guests or those with mobility issues, as getting up from the floor can be challenging.
For greater comfort and convenience, it is recommended that travelers in these groups choose a room with Western-style beds. Many hotels and ryokans offer both options, so be sure to check room details before making a reservation.
