I Stayed at a Remote Abandoned School Hotel with Rescue Cats in Japan | Iya 🐈 | Yamaneko Hotel
This time, I visited a remote mountain area in Iya, one of Japan’s three most secluded regions,
and stayed at a hotel created from an old, closed elementary school.
Surrounded by deep valleys and steep mountains, the school building has been preserved almost exactly as it was, and now serves as a hotel, café, and a small rescue cat room.
The rescue cats here are still young and full of energy, and they spent hours playing without getting tired. Watching them run, jump, and repeat the same games again and again was unexpectedly relaxing.
Staying overnight in an actual former school building felt quite unique, and spending time in such a quiet, isolated place made me curious about the history and stories that remain in this region.
Iya is known for its deep valleys and difficult access, and after visiting in person, I found myself wanting to learn more about why this place has long been called a “hidden region.”

日本三大秘境にある保護猫と過ごせる廃校ホテルに泊まってみた。徳島県祖谷 | 注文の多い誘眠店
今回は、日本三大秘境のひとつ、祖谷の山奥にある廃校を活かしたホテルに泊まってきました。深い谷と険しい山に囲まれた場所に、当時の姿をほとんどそのまま残した校舎があり、ホテルやカフェ、保護猫ルームとして使われています。保護猫たちはまだ若く、とにかく元気いっぱいで、何時間も飽きずに遊び続けてくれました。実際の廃校に泊まる体験はとても新鮮で、静かな環境の中で過ごす時間は、特別なものでした。祖谷は、深い谷と険しい地形のため、昔から外との行き来が難しかった場所だそうです。実際に訪れてみて、この土地に残るものや歴史をもっと知りたくなりました。

G’day and Konnichiwa ☺️Happy Wednesday to you! 👋 Wow, what a nice area to have a school turned hotel 👍🤩 The mountain scenery is just stunning 😍 The locals really did a wonderful job in preserving the school and turning it into a very cool hotel. Great to see the building still kept the school charm 🫶 It’s also kind of them to give these cats a place to stay till they can be adopted. That kitten is so cute 🥰 😻 It took quite the liking to you immediately. I love how whenever you visit a cat place there is always one or two cats that just get comfortable with you quickly and sit in your lap and soak up the cuddles and pats 😍 You must be a very kind and gentle person ☺️🤗 Kuro chan reminds me a bit of Batman with the colouring on her head like she is wearing a mask 😻she is super sweet though ❤ You even got to eat some of my favourite foods at this place (pizza and donuts! 🍩 🍕) 😋 I have to put this place on my bucket list 😃👍 When you come home after your trips does your cat get suspicious and jealous on where you have been? I’d imagine they would smell other cats on you and demand answers he he he 🤭🤭😹😹 I know if I go out and have had interaction with other cats and dogs my cat smells it on my clothes and she gets jealous at first but then gets super affectionate and acts all cute by night time 🤣😂 Thank you for sharing another peaceful, healing and delightful video 🙏 🥹 Hope you have a wonderful rest of the week and may it be filled with gentle sunshine, warm cups of tea/coffee, cat cuddles and joy 😊
