奥久慈県立自然公園矢祭山（昭和23年10月18日指定・面積668ヘクタール）には、三勝八景があり、山は奇岩怪石に富み、久慈川の清流とともに雄大な景勝地で、四季折々の景観は素晴らしく、「東北の耶馬溪」と称されています。公園内には、西行法師・水戸光圀・阪正臣の歌碑と本居豊頴が撰文した矢祭山の碑があり、百数十年を経た数多いツツジが松・桜とともに生育しています。
また、このあたり一帯は、鳥獣保護区として指定され、キジ･ヤマドリ･ムクドリ・キビタキ・カワセミ・ツグミ・ヒガラ・イカル・サンコウチョウ・コルリ等の野鳥や、イノシシ・ウサギ・キツネ等約90種類以上の鳥獣が生息しています。春は河鹿の鳴き声、らんまんの桜花、5月、自生山ツツジ5万本以上にも及び全山ツツジの紅と化し、山にはわらび・ぜんまい狩り、家族連れのピクニックにも最適です。さらに、とりわけ秋の景色の風情は目を見張るものがあります。気の遠くなる様な澄みきった青い空、耳を澄ますと鈴虫・松虫の鳴く音、当り一面燃えるような紅葉など天然の美が満喫できます。
Okukuji Prefectural Natural Park Yamatsuri Mountain (designated October 18, 1948; area 668 hectares) features the Three Victories and Eight Views. The mountain is rich in bizarre rocks and strange stones, and together with the clear waters of the Kuji River, it forms a magnificent scenic spot. Its seasonal landscapes are splendid, earning it the name “Yabakei of Tohoku.” Within the park stand monuments inscribed with poems by the Buddhist monk Saigyo, Mito Kōyō, and Sakamoto Masatomi, alongside a monument for Yamatsuri Mountain with an inscription by Motoori Toyoaki. Hundreds of azaleas, some over a century old, thrive here alongside pine and cherry trees.
Furthermore, this entire area is designated as a wildlife sanctuary, home to over 90 species of birds and animals, including pheasants, Japanese woodcock, starlings, yellow-browed warblers, kingfishers, thrushes, coal tits, icterine warblers, Japanese bush warblers, and blue magpies, as well as wild boars, rabbits, and foxes. Spring brings the call of the Japanese bush warbler, abundant cherry blossoms, and in May, over 50,000 wild mountain azaleas transform the entire mountain into a sea of crimson. The mountains are also ideal for bracken and fiddlehead fern gathering, and family picnics. Moreover, the autumn scenery is particularly breathtaking. Enjoy the natural beauty of the mind-bogglingly clear blue sky, the chirping of bell crickets and pine crickets if you listen closely, and the fiery red leaves covering the entire landscape.
