Love the video. The Japanese do everything at another level!. Out of curiosity, why don’t any of them seem to wear hearing protection?. Was it just for the video?.
For all the talk of freedom and fun among the younger craftsmen and women, there is an enduring psychological devotion to a certain inferiority based attitude in the culture. There is never an absence of adherence to strict hierarchy. Even professing humility is a competition. Who can metaphorically bow lowest while exceeding, who can be expert while decrying that finesse in themselves. This is the ideal. It is a revered self-driven emasculation, the absolute opposite of obtuse grandiosity. The extremes create a very repressed culture. Which, incidentally, is 100% acknowledged. I'm wishing an evolving true freedom for the next generations.
While living in Japan, I both loved the culture (and especially the wonderful people), but also felt absolutely stuffed into a box with no exit.
I did aquire a gorgeous 330mm Yanagiba which is the favorite knife in my kit. 💪 😊
