Nekoze, An Abandoned Village in Fukui | Dec 2023 [4K]

The origin of the ancient place name has been passed down through generations: a hunchbacked prince lived in seclusion here and came to be called the Stooped Prince, which became the origin of the name Nekoze, leading to a way of life that set this settlement apart from others. Later, his descendants endured great hardships to secure three major water sources, and through the production of bountiful farmland and firewood and charcoal, they maintained a stable livelihood. However, the spread of fossil fuels threatened their way of life, and unable to resist the times, they were compelled to relocate. The maintenance of the aging shrine also became impossible, and upon its dismantling, through the kind consideration of Yoshioka Shrine in Shimayamanashi-machi, they borrowed a corner of land, constructed a small sanctuary, and transferred the deity there. Wherever they may dwell, they cast their thoughts toward their homeland, remembering the earnest toil of their forebears, and despite the passage of countless years, they hope that the former prosperity may be conveyed to future generations.

Though we part, we shall pass down the tale
Of our homeland and the spirit
Our ancestors left behind
