Walking in Kuwana, Mie: Historic Post Town and a Quiet Station Area

Although I originally wanted to travel north to the Tohoku region, recent news about bears made me decide to head west instead. The final destination of this journey is planned to be Okayama Prefecture.

After crossing Kanagawa, Shizuoka, and Aichi Prefectures, I arrived in Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture. Kuwana feels like a gateway city to Mie. During the Edo period, it flourished as one of the most important post towns along the Tokaido, as well as a castle town and port town, and traces of its historic streetscape can still be felt today.

In contrast, present-day Kuwana has a rather quiet atmosphere around the station. One striking sight is Soei Mate, a large abandoned building that has become well known as an urban ruin. The facility closed in 2020, and although demolition has been discussed for this year, the building was still standing at the time of filming. It makes you wonder what will happen next.

This time, I walked a bit further from the station to visit Kuwana Teramachi Shopping Street, a covered arcade that still retains a nostalgic local atmosphere.
