Top 30 Sunrise & Sunset Spots in Tohoku and northern Japan! Part 1 Oma-zaki ( Aomori Prefecture ) Oma-zaki is the northernmost cape on Honshu, located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. Oma-zaki is a flat terrain with a paved quay. There are monuments in the shape of tuna fishing and a stone monument that reads “The northernmost point of Honshu” stand here. Oma-zaki Lighthouse is located on Benten Island off the coast of Oma-zaki. It has been selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan. Sunrise at Oma-zaki Cape (Aomori Prefecture) The Tsugaru Strait’s swift currents create excellent fishing grounds, particularly renowned as a prime spot for pole-and-line tuna fishing. From before dawn, the Tsugaru Strait bustles with numerous fishing boats. Oma is famous for its spectacular pole-and-line tuna fishing. Many tourists visit from across Japan specifically to see Oma tuna. Oma Cape is a tourist destination rich in attractions. A stone monument with the inscription “This is the northernmost point of Honshu”. Hokkaido can be seen behind the Ohmazaki Lighthouse. The distance to Hokkaido on the opposite shore is 17.5 km. making it the shortest point between Honshu and Hokkaido. Dusk is approaching Omazaki. The sun is setting over the land of Hokkaido. Mount Hakodate can also be seen in the distance. Oma-zaki is the northernmost point on Honshu where you can experience the symbiosis between people and nature. Hotokegaura (Aomori Prefecture) Tenryu Rock Hotokegaura is a coast located on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture It is a scenic spot where you can see the overwhelming beauty of oddly shaped rocks and cliffs. The Head of Nyorai A group of huge rocks looms over the area as if you have wandered into another world. It is a mysterious space that overwhelms visitors. The natural formations created by the rough waves and wind and snow of the Tsugaru Straits create a magnificent scale and mysterious landscape brings us a sense of awe and great emotion. Hotokegaura has been selected as one of the “100 Hidden Places of Japan” It is also designated as a national “scenic beauty” and “natural monument”. At Hotokegaura in the evening, you can experience an even more fantastical world It is an amazing sightseeing spot representing Shimokita Peninsula. Cape Tappi ( Aomori Prefecture ) Cape Tappi is located at the northernmost tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture The surrounding area is a plateau of cliffs about 100m above sea level It is also famous as a flight route for migratory birds crossing the Tsugaru Straits. Birdwatchers often visit this area. The Tsugaru Strait has strong tidal currents, making it a prime fishing ground, and many fishing boats come and go from early morning. Tappizaki Lighthouse Tappizaki Lighthouse is a large white lighthouse that stands at the tip of Cape Tappi and has been selected as one of the “50 Best Lighthouses in Japan” Cape Tappi has a promenade centered around the lighthouse Visitors can enjoy walking around the area while enjoying a panoramic view of the ocean. Iwaki is a 1,625m high mountain located in the western part of Aomori Prefecture. It is one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. The scenery of apple orchards spreading across the Tsugaru Plain and Mt Iwaki is truly a representative view of this region. The summit of Mt. Iwaki has three peaks that form the Japanese character for “mountain”. Each of the three peaks is called Iwaki-san, Chokai-san, and Genki-san. Evening of the Tsugaru Plain. The Tsugaru Plain, which looks up to the majestic Mount Iwaki, is also home to rice cultivation. Tsugaru rice is produced here, and the rice paddy area spreads out. Mt. Iwaki is the symbolic mountain of Tsugaru region. Lake Towada (Aomori / Akita Prefecture) Kankodai ( Aomori prefecture ) Lake Towada is a lake that straddles Aomori and Akita prefectures. The view of the setting sun from the shore of Lake Towada is extraordinary. Lake Towada is the premier destination in the Tohoku region. Tanesashi Coast ( Aomori Prefecture ) Tanesashi Coast is a coast located in the eastern part of Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture It has been designated as a “Scenic Spot” by the country The coast offers a richly varied landscape of natural grass, pine forests, strange rock formations of various sizes, and sandy beaches. The rising sun dramatically changed the colors of the landscape. The southern part of the coastline is a flat area covered with natural grass. This is one of the highlights of the Tanesashi Coast. The natural grassy area offers an open landscape and a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Ashigezaki Observatory The northern part of the Tanesashi Coast is a reef area with rugged rocky outcrops. The “Ashigezaki Observatory” and “ Samekado Lighthouse” offer a panoramic view of the coast. The Ashigezaki Observatory is the starting point of the Tanesashi Coastal Trail. From the observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and the coast. In June, the area around the observatory is filled with the flowers of the Hamanasu (Rhus succedanea). The six prefectures in the Tohoku region (Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Miyagi, Yamagata, and Fukushima) are all large in area and offer a wide variety of natural scenery from the sea to mountainous regions.
This video compiles 30 famous sunrise and sunset spots across the Tohoku region! Part 1 features 10 locations in Aomori Prefecture and 3 in Iwate Prefecture!

■大間崎 ( 青森県 )
大間崎(おおまざき)は、青森県下北半島にある本州最北端の岬です。大間崎は平坦な地形で、舗装された岸壁になっており、マグロの一本釣りを模ったモニュメントや「本州最北端」の石碑が立っています。大間埼灯台は、大間崎の沖合にある弁天島にあり、「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。
■仏ヶ浦 ( 青森県 )
仏ヶ浦(ほとけがうら)は、青森県下北半島に位置する海岸で、圧倒的な奇岩・断崖美が見られる景勝地です。まるで異世界にでも迷い込んだかのような巨岩群が迫り、訪れた者を圧倒する不思議な空間が広がります。国の「名勝」「天然記念物」にも指定されています。
■竜飛崎 ( 青森県 )
竜飛崎(たっぴざき)は、青森県津軽半島の最北端に位置する岬で、付近は標高約100mの断崖絶壁の台地となっています。竜飛崎には、灯台を中心に遊歩道が整備されており、大海原を一望しながら周辺散策を楽しめます。竜飛埼灯台は、竜飛崎の突端に立つ白亜の大型灯台で「日本の灯台50選」に選定されています。
■岩木山 ( 青森県 )
岩木山(いわきさん)は、青森県西部に位置する標高1,625mの山で、「日本百名山」の一つに数えられます。津軽平野一帯に広がるリンゴ園と岩木山の風景は、まさにこの地域を代表する風物詩といえます。また、雄大な岩木山を仰ぐ津軽平野では稲作も盛んで、津軽米の産地となっており、水田地帯が広がります。岩木山は、津軽地方を象徴する名峰です
■十和田湖 瞰湖台(青森県)
十和田湖は、青森県と秋田県にまたがる湖で、国の「特別名勝」に指定されています。
瞰湖台 (かんこだい) は、十和田湖の御倉(おぐら)半島と中山半島に挟まれた中湖(なかのうみ)を望む展望所で、澄み切った湖面に遊覧船が船跡を残して進む情景が素晴らしいです。
■十和田湖 子ノ口(青森県)
子ノ口 (ねのくち) は、奥入瀬渓流の流出口であり、遊覧船発着所など十和田湖の観光拠点の一つとしても有名です。夕陽名所としても知られ、「日本の夕陽百選」に選定されています。
■種差海岸 ( 青森県 )
種差海岸(たねさしかいがん)は、青森県八戸市の東部にある海岸で、国の「名勝」に指定されています。種差海岸は南北約12kmにわたって続き、天然芝や松林、大小の奇岩群や砂浜など、変化に富んだ景観が見られます。種差海岸は「日本の白砂青松100選」や「遊歩百選」にも選ばれています。
■蕪島 ( 青森県 )
蕪島(かぶしま)は、青森県八戸市の近郊に位置する島で、ウミネコの一大繁殖地として知られています。現在の蕪島は、本土と陸続きとなっていて、参道を登っていくと蕪嶋神社が鎮座しています。島の上から見下ろすウミネコのコロニーは圧巻で、国の「天然記念物」に指定されており、鳴き声の大合唱は「音風景百選」にも選ばれています。
■北山崎 ( 岩手県 )
北山崎(きたやまざき)は、岩手県北東部に位置する断崖絶壁の海岸で、その海岸美は日本随一といわれます。高さ200mもの断崖は「海のアルプス」とも称され、ダイナミックな海岸線が約8kmにわたって続きます。北山崎には断崖の下に続く遊歩道と展望台が整備されており、迫力ある断崖美を様々な角度・高度から眺められます。
■三王岩 ( 岩手県 )
三王岩(さんのういわ)は宮古市田老町の海辺にある三つの岩の総称で、三陸海岸を代表する景観の一つです。寄せては返す波と、海を吹き抜ける強風が、約1億年もの歳月をかけて三王岩を形作りました。
■浄土ヶ浜 ( 岩手県 )
浄土ヶ浜(じょうどがはま)は、岩手県宮古市にある海岸で、三陸海岸を代表する景勝地の1つです。約5千万年前に形成された岩塊によって、外海と隔てられた穏やかな入り江が形成されました。浄土ヶ浜は環境省の「快水浴場百選」の「特選」に選ばれ、「日本の渚100選」にも選定されています。
