The ticket gates for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route have opened, so we’re heading there as we’re leaving at 10:00. The temperature is 2 degrees and it’s already snowing. This is the ticket counter. I’m on my way now, taking the 10:00 departure. Thank you. From Ogizawa Station in Nagano Prefecture to Kurobe Dam, it’s a 16-minute electric bus ride through the Kanden Tunnel. Kurobe Dam’s mascot, Kuronyon. From Kurobe Dam to Kurobeko Station, it’s about a 15-minute walk. The elevation is 1,454m. Mount Tateyama is visible in front of Kurobe Dam, and the mountains reflected on the water are beautiful. Mount Akaushi and Mount Suisho are visible in the background. It was outside the tourist water release period at the time, but they were releasing water. Luckily, next up was the cave. I’ll take the Kurobe Cable Car. It’s a 5-minute ride to Kurobedaira Station. From there, it’s a 7-minute ride on the Tateyama Ropeway to Daikanbou. Daikanbou is 2016m high. The observation deck here is really beautiful. Today it’s cloudy so the clouds clear up and turn completely white, then disappear and you can see the beautiful clouds. The ropeway will be coming up from the bottom in a little while so I think I’ll wait here for a bit. I have about 30 minutes here so I’ll relax for a bit. Finally, from Daikanbou to Murodo it’s about a 10-minute ride on the Tateyama Tunnel electric bus. I think I can carry more than 15kg of camping gear today. I’m starting to get anxious. I’ve arrived at Mt. Tateyama and have just left Murodo Bus Terminal. The weather is nice today and the view is spectacular. From here, I’m heading to Raichozawa Campsite, 2km away. The snow is fluffy and it seems like it had fallen a lot until yesterday. It’s really fluffy and my luggage is frozen at Mikuriga Pond. Isn’t it scary that my luggage is this big? It ‘s been packed down properly and a path has been formed. It’s only about a 10-minute walk from Murodo. This is Mikuriga Pond. There were ptarmigans here the other day, but with everything buried in snow, there’s no vegetation to feed on, so they’re gone. Everything’s frozen at Mikuriga Pond. I came across a lot of ptarmigans at the beginning of November. At this time of year, they start molting from autumn to winter, and they are so cute with their speckled feathers. I was in a hurry this morning and left my hat in the car. The altitude is about 2,400m. I’ll go a little further. Enmadai is called Jigokudani Observatory, and it’s Jigokudani . Dainichi Mountains, Entakayama. All the ptarmigans may have gone over there. There is a 360-degree spectacular view from here, and you can see Mt. Tsurugi. You can also see Mt. Tateyama and Mt. Jodo from Mt. Betsuyama. There are a lot of tourists and foreigners around Nemikurigaike and Enmadai, but from there,帰りました。 English: Up ahead, most of the people are skiing. Isn’t it amazing? Raichozawa Campsite is on the other side of that hill. I can see the campsite. We went up a little bit, but now we’re down about 100m. The snow is deep. Almost no one goes this far, it’s just skiers, so the snow isn’t packed down at all. We ‘ve arrived at the campsite. There are more people than I expected. It feels like the tents are set up differently than in the summer. I passed by this campsite when I went to Ikenodaira last month, but the atmosphere is completely different. Today is my first time camping in a tent in the snow and I didn’t know what to do, so I asked my favorite Raicho-so staff and they said they would show me . Is that Mr. Hayashi in overalls? Yes, that’s right . Sorry , I just started filming without any prior arrangement and appeared in this video. Is it okay to be on camera? It ‘s fine. Thank you. Thank you . Thank you. In the summer, I think there are limited tent locations, but in the winter, you can choose anywhere you like and dig a snow hole if necessary. Thank you. After that, I’ll decide on a location. Today I actually brought a tripod and a lens that can take pictures of the stars, so I want to take pictures of the tent village, my tent, Mt. Tateyama, and the starry sky!! So I decided , I think I’ll do it here ! The new snow is so fluffy, so we’ll start by digging deep enough to bury the tent a third of the way through. The rough guideline is to dig deep enough so that the fluffy layer of snow reaches the harder layer underneath. We won’t know how deep it is until we dig deep enough. (A friend shows up.) Do you have a shovel? There’s so much snow, it’ll be dark by the time I’m alone, so I’ll join forces with a friend who just happened to be passing by and we’ll dig and pack the snow down together . Thanks… Mr. Hayashi , you’ve dug quite a bit, but are you done yet? Not yet. If we keep stomping on it, it’ll just keep avalanching, and when we get inside the tent, it’ll sink in, which isn’t very comfortable, so let’s pack it down until it ‘s a little deep today. Is it deep today? Really? Let’s do our best. I had a feeling it was deep, but the deeper it gets, the more we have to lift the snow we’ve dug up, which is really hard. It feels like the snow at the bottom is a little heavier. It’s getting pretty hard, isn’t it? The further down we go, the heavier the snow gets. After digging more than a meter, we were given permission to pack it down, so we just kept stomping on it to pack it down. It feels like it’s packed down. Are there any tips for pitching a tent? When tenting on a snowy mountain, if you put snow inside the tent, it will get wet, so we close the zipper on the tent before setting it up. I made these bamboo pegs at Raicho-so. *Are these bamboo pegs handmade? Thank you, that’s why I said we didn’t need pegs. They don’t need to be sharp to stick in. You don’t stick them in, you bury them sideways. Bury them. I shouldn’t have stuck them in.💦 I wasn’t done digging the snow yet. I just kept digging the snow, inserting the bamboo pegs sideways, burying them with snow, tamping them down, and then putting down the guy lines. It felt good. One thing to note about the bamboo pegs is that it’s quite common for people to leave them behind when they go home. Let’s go home without leaving anything behind. Okay, we’re back, eight pegs! The tent is up! The snow wasn’t compacted at all, so we kept digging and digging. A helper who happened to be passing by helped out, and finally, the tent was up in the 1m snow wall! It’s now 3:10, and it took 1 hour and 40 minutes. It’s cold, so I laid the silver mat down and on top of that I put a Magic Mountain air mattress. It’s fluffy and warm. A sleeping bag from Isuka that is warm for severe winters. It can go down to -20 degrees. From there, condensation will build up, so I brought my usual VIVI sleeping bag cover. I put the Magic Mountain pillow pack on the far right, and my feet are cold, so I used warm down socks from Montbell. Just wearing these keeps me super warm. Let me show you the left side of the tent. The bed is on the right, and I’ve put my things on the left. These are gloves and other warm items. I bought this, so all I need to do is heat it up. It’s super easy to cook. For a snack, I worked hard today, so I had some Matsumoto Ishigaki Sable, which I think is the best souvenir. Hato Sable, and Tanzawa potatoes, which I bought as souvenirs the other day when I went to Tanzawa for a photo shoot. Plus , the view of Mt. Tateyama is amazing. It’s amazing, isn’t it ? I think I did a good job for my first time. 4:10 PM I’m going to look for rock ptarmigan. It’s still light until just after 5 o’clock, so I’m going to look for them. Once the sun went down, the temperature dropped dramatically. I think it was about -2-3°C. I used an M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8 IS PRO (100-400mm equivalent, 35mm equivalent). The rock ptarmigan had descended lower and was quite far away, so I attached a 2x teleconverter (200-800mm equivalent, 35mm equivalent). It started to get a little chilly once the sun went down, so I’ll warm myself up with some hot packs. The Dainichi Mountains look cool from below, and the burning mountain in the background is Mt. Tateyama, my beloved Mt. Tateyama♡ It’s so beautiful! The snow at Murodo is quite deep, and the vegetation that the Japanese ptarmigan eats has been buried, so there aren’t many of them. Today, I’m going to descend to an altitude where I think rock ptarmigan might be found , camping, and looking for them in the vegetation below and in the valleys. I bought chanko nabe at my supermarket, but I put it in the tent and when I went to look for ptarmigan, it was frozen solid. It was dangerous because it might fall over, so I prepared a flat, stable board like this and cooked it on it . I opened it to make sure I didn’t suffocate . It was all frozen solid, so I broke it apart and it went in just fine. I’m going to make it with this! It smells delicious. Hot chanko nabe to eat at minus 8 degrees. Udon with udon sounds delicious. I’m so happy, it was easy. Let’s eat . It was really cold during the photo shoot too. It was sunny today, so the temperature will drop suddenly once the sun goes down. I haven’t eaten breakfast or lunch, so this is the first meal in a long time. The soup is delicious. The udon is boiled from the beginning, so it’s really soft. That’s why it’s delicious. I’m not good at eating long noodles. I couldn’t smoke at all. I wish I could smoke but I always end up munching humming. I think making chanko nabe was the right decision . I ate it all. Thank you for the meal. It warmed me up so much. Tomorrow I’m going to go look for ptarmigan at 5:30am. My tent is really cool. 1:42am. I was trying to take pictures of the stars but I wanted to photograph Orion but it went too high. Can you see it in the picture? I thought around 12 o’clock would be good for taking a picture of Orion but it was really cloudy. Too bad I got the picture like this. Good morning. 5:42am. My face was cold . It’s really cold . But I’m going to put on lots of clothes now and go look for ptarmigan. I put my camera in a big ziplock bag to stop condensation. I thought my tent wouldn’t be frozen but it’s really frozen. This is my home today. Who would have thought I’d be living with such a spectacular view!? I’m so happy. I’m ready. Take a look at my home. 帰りま した。 English: Amazing! There were no ptarmigans. *Making drinking water from the snow. I wonder how long it will take. It feels like I’m melting shaved ice, and I feel guilty. I’ll eat rice cakes while waiting for the water to boil. Apparently , on snowy mountains, rice balls with a lot of moisture will freeze, so bread or rice cakes are good. It’s so cool. The snow is melting and the water is starting to boil. I thought about straining it with a coffee filter, but I wonder if it will be okay. It ‘s getting warm. I need to pack up quickly. Well, there’s no need to rush. AM 7:56 I packed up the tent and went up from there around 9 to 9:30, then from 11am there was a day spa at Raicho-so so I’d warm up, so I’m really looking forward to that, I’ve been working hard, it was really cold yesterday, so yeah, let’s pack up, I struggled with the bamboo pegs while setting up and taking down, it was pretty cold but I was able to bear it and it was so much fun, I feel like I’ll try again, so I’ve packed up, it was a great experience, now I’m going to go up that hill , and Mt.
