More Cats Than People on a Cat Island in Japan — About 100 Cats🐈🐈 | Sanagi Island | 猫島 / 佐柳島
A small island in the Seto Inland Sea, Sanagijima (Sanagi Island). It’s famous worldwide as a cat island with more cats than people. We spent a day enjoying island time with the cats. Please enjoy until the end. Good morning. Today, we’re heading to Tadotsu Station in Kagawa. By plane, go via bus from Takamatsu Station.
By the bullet train (Shinkansen), transfer to a local line at Okayama Station. From here, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the ferry terminal. Tadotsu has flourished as a port town since the Nara period. We can see the ferry terminal now. Today’s ferry. Capacity: 95 passengers. Round-trip ticket: 1,320 yen. Alright, let’s get on board. The passenger cabins are on the first and second floors. Departure! Sanagijima Island sits roughly between Okayama and Kagawa. In the distance is the Seto Ohashi Bridge, connecting Honshu and Shikoku. On the way, we stop by Takamijima Island. Sanagijima Island is coming into view. The 6:55 ferry arrives at Nagasaki Port first, not Honura Port. We got off at Honura Port on the return ferry bound for Tadotsu. Thank you very much. It’s our first time back on Sanagijima in about three years. Rules of Sanagijima Island. Take your trash home, don’t enter private property, and don’t overfeed the cats. The cats near the pier were getting treats from other visitors. 🐱 We walked a little further. There’s a cat on the breakwater. The cat comes closer. I hear the sound of a motorbike. It seems to be breakfast time, given by island residents. After eating, the cat drinks some water. another cat wants to play. Giving up, the two drink water together. A local resident told me these two are mother and child. This black-and-white kitten was born this spring. A mother cat’s play fighting is a mix of play, teaching, and love. Is she teaching a sense of timing? Good morning. Such a talkative cat. More cats start to gather. Will another one come? Oh—did you go down there? It feels like I’m being called. At low tide, the cat walks into places like this, where the sea has pulled back. (At high tide, this area is underwater.) Amazing. Is this territory too? The other cat from earlier comes down as well. Is there something here? Massage time on the rocks and sandy beach. How’s the pressure? Looks like the other cat wanted a turn too. Watch the cat on the breakwater behind. The cat from the back of the breakwater is coming down. Amazingly, it climbed straight down the breakwater. Two cats with very similar faces. One cat sniffs the other. That’s the flehmen response. Kept sniffing for quite a while. See you. A cat follows me up from the beach. A small thank-you.
(Only a small amount.) Another cat starts to move. Down vertically, and back up again.
Such amazing physical ability. Amazing. The tabby cat is back too. There are treats in my backpack. Let’s go. The mother and kitten from earlier are in front of my backpack. The kitten is playing with the backpack strap. So cute. The kitten climbs onto my bag, refusing to let go. 😆 I managed to take out the treats safely. More cats come over from somewhere. Want a treat? Here you go. Oh, back down there again. Maybe looking for small fish, even in the sea? In the end, there was nothing,
and it looks like the cat moved over there. I had such a nice time playing with everyone.
Thank you. Let’s continue exploring the island. There’s a cat on the breakwater. Good morning. While I was getting cat food ready,
the cat suddenly jumped. I’ve never seen that before.
Thank you. See you. You’re amazing. Thank you. Let’s take a look at the seaside view. A calm morning in the Seto Inland Sea. There’s a cat at the post office too. Maybe just after breakfast. A cat is calling out to me from afar. Good morning. Checking out the other people around. Maybe this cat is cared for by a nearby shop. So cute. A café and guesthouse renovated from a former wooden school by the sea. Some cats here are cared for by this place. Good morning. The cats were relaxing in the hostel courtyard. A true resident cat. Nekonoshima Hostel & Cafe Nekonoshima. Photos only were allowed, so I’m sharing the atmosphere and the food. The limited lunch (10 meals a day, reservation available)
and the house-roasted coffee were delicious. 😋 Oh, the cat from earlier came back again. What’s up? A massage? Sanagijima has a lot of affectionate cats. Looks like the cat is heading over to those guys. The two cats by the entrance climbed up onto the breakwater. Sanagijima is home to about 40 residents and around 100 cats. The cats mainly live around Honura, Nekonoshima Hostel, and the Nagasaki area. Island walks are from sunrise to sunset. A cat with a real boss-like presence comes over. Hello. With such a big face, I bet he’s very popular. An irresistibly cute shape. Such an affectionate cat. So cute. Looks like he’s going to get attention from those people too. The Nagasaki area is located on the north side of Sanagijima. A request from the cat protection group. Around 50 cats live here in the Nagasaki area. When I point the camera, the cat seems to come over. So cute. Hello. Many cats here love being petted. Before I know it, other cats gather around. Nice to meet you. A gentle cat punch. Behind me too. Each cat stays close, in their own way. Looks like a smile. This Nagasaki area stays cool in summer, but gets cold in winter. It’s getting cold. The cat protection group in the Nagasaki area has created safe spaces for the cats. Including play areas and plastic shelters to keep them warm. This cat has a big belly, so I thought, “Maybe pregnant?” But he’s a boy. Compared to my visit three years ago, many cats seem a bit plumper now. Relaxing time, everywhere. 😊 This cat wants to be held and get a massage. How is it? Is this okay? Cats really do love higher places. The sunlight is warm, so everyone has come out. It helps if leftover cat food is put into the cooler box. I saw a request for support on Instagram, so I bought this. Everyone comes over to check. You can get some later from your dad. Alright, I’m closing it now. I truly respect the island residents who care for the cats every day. Thank you, everyone. 😊 I got to see the ginger boss cat again. He carefully checks on the other cats. Since this is a road, let’s do the massage over here. The boss wants to keep the massage all to himself. Seems like he won’t give it up, no matter who comes. But it looks like he’s already forgotten about the massage. See you. Bye-bye. Sanagijima is one of the many small inhabited islands in the Seto Inland Sea. The island developed around fishing, but today faces population decline and aging. Even so, traces of daily life and the island culture of the Seto Inland Sea remain. Thank you for today. When I look back, a cat is there. Maybe a parent and child, or siblings. After leaving the shrine, cats are gathering at the entrance. Suddenly, strong winds pick up in the evening. The cats take shelter in the shade of the trees too. This is a really good place. Even in the strong wind, a cat comes over for a massage. The wind is really strong here. Maybe over there is better. Kuro-chan was hiding inside the ditch. The wind isn’t cold, so some cats are warming up in the sunset. The Honura area we visited in the morning was now at high tide. The cats are resting in the grass. Hachi-chan, who I spent time with this morning, came over. That parent and kitten are here too. Even in the evening, it’s cat wrestling time. Even with the sea so close, this breakwater seems to be a favorite. Taking cats away without permission is prohibited. The return ferry has arrived. As the tide pulls back a little, a cat is walking way out there. 🐈 Time to head home. Thank you, cats!! Thank you for watching until the end 🐈
This time, we took a day trip to Sanagijima Island, a cat island in Kagawa Prefecture.
It was our first visit in three years. This small island in the Seto Inland Sea is home to many cats, cared for and watched over by local residents.
Walking through the Honura and Nagasaki areas, we spent a peaceful day meeting friendly cats and enjoying island time. Sanagijima is a small island with a circumference of about 6.6 km, where around 100 cats now live—more cats than people.
Please enjoy the relaxed island scenery, local culture, and the everyday lives of the cats.
