【完成披露!!】建築家がつくる“外とゆるくつながる家”葉山リノベーション|北欧×和モダンの上質な暮らし

Hello everyone. I’m architect Vacance Okada. This time, instead of my usual hotel exploration, I’d like to introduce a renovation project for a house in Hayama that I designed myself. Based on a building over 40 years old, I designed the spatial composition of a home with a relaxed lifestyle, surrounded by the ocean and a tranquil natural surroundings. While I’ve visited various hotels and buildings on this channel, this time I’d like to share the architectural concept, material selection, and process from the perspective of a creator . Let’s take a look at the charms of this home one by one. This project involved renovating a 40-year-old detached house in Hayama , surrounded by lush greenery and a pleasant ocean breeze . While the building itself is old, the total floor area exceeds 190 square meters, providing a spacious and spacious space for a typical residence. It was a well-constructed building for its time. To maximize its appeal, the exterior design retained the existing exterior walls and roof as much as possible, while incorporating new burnt cedar-style paneling on the first floor. The two-tone black and white design creates a simple yet calming and striking appearance. Furthermore, the existing Japanese-style room was boldly removed to create a parking space and create a “new connection” that allows for a clear line of sight and flow to the garden. The goal was to create a home where people can enjoy the nature and breeze that is so characteristic of Hayama and lead a relaxed lifestyle. As a result, the previously separate garden blends naturally into everyday life, creating a sense of spaciousness in daily life. Next, let’s take a look at the interior. The front door is designed to blend in with the exterior wall finish, creating a simpler and more tranquil impression. Entering the home, a bright and open entrance hall is revealed, filled with abundant natural light. The staircase and atrium utilize the existing structure to create a relaxed vertical expanse throughout the space. A large opening at the front provides a clear line of sight to the garden, and the floor of the entrance hall and terrace are continuous, creating a comfortable sense of unity that gently connects the inside and outside. Bringing the charred cedar-style exterior wall material into the interior creates a sense of continuity between the materials, bringing nature closer to daily life. A small planting space was created beyond the opening, and a symbolic lone pine tree was placed in a well-balanced arrangement to subtly incorporate a Japanese nuance . The existing, tasteful handrail in the atrium was intentionally retained, and an AKARI pendant light, crafted from washi paper, softly floats there. Nostalgia and modernity coexist, creating a soft and comfortable atrium space. Next, let’s take a look at the living space connected to the entrance hall. By adding a large horizontal opening to the existing window, abundant natural light permeates the entire space, creating a more comfortable connection to the garden and terrace. By selecting materials that highlight the texture of wood and combining them with soft, Scandinavian-inspired interiors in soft tones, the living space exudes a calm and serene atmosphere, blending in with the natural surroundings of Hayama. Furthermore, part of the interior was intentionally “opened up,” connecting the entrance hall to the terrace. Originally indoors, the living room has been reconstructed as a luxurious, covered, semi-outdoor space that is comfortable in any weather. The gentle connection between indoors, outdoors, and semi-outdoors creates a living room where time flows richly , gently incorporating Hayama’s nature and breeze in various aspects of daily life . The living room sofa is an original design created specifically for the space. It subtly incorporates Japanese elements, harmonizing with the overall texture and scale. The base resembles a pair of geta sandals, and is paired with a low, deep cushion, allowing it to function as a side table. The low profile brings a sense of calm to the space, creating a comfortable living space where you can lean back and relax. At the back of the living room, a stainless steel counter table is installed, continuing from the kitchen countertop. It provides a comfortable workspace where you can do some light work or take a coffee break while gazing at the greenery outside the window. Next, let’s take a look at the kitchen and dining space connected to the back of the living room. The stainless steel countertop, which continues from the workspace, is a simple design that is integrated into the sink. A large table, large enough to accommodate large groups, has been placed next to the kitchen, creating a dining space where family and friends can gather. By lowering the ceiling in some areas, a tranquil, enclosed atmosphere is created. Additionally, a pantry and storage space are provided next to the kitchen. By streamlining the living space and storage, the design maintains a simple yet beautiful aesthetic. A hallway leading from the kitchen leads to the entrance hall, creating a circulation path. Since the bathroom and washbasin are located on the second floor, this hallway on the first floor features a hand-washing area behind shoji screen doors, making it easy for guests to use. The layout of the first floor minimizes partitions and gently connects the spaces, creating a natural connection between the indoors and outdoors and a comfortable sense of unity throughout the home. This configuration allows the family to spend their time however they like, while maintaining a comfortable sense of connection. Next, let’s take a look at the second floor, where each family member’s private space, such as the master bedroom and children’s rooms, is located. One of the key changes was moving the bathroom and other wet areas to the second floor. By consolidating the bathroom, vanity, laundry, and family closet into one zone, we minimized unnecessary movement and achieved an efficient, stress-free household workflow. So, what did you think of the Hayama home renovation project, which I designed myself? This project breathed new life into a home that was over 40 years old, while reconstructing it with the theme of “living in a gentle connection with nature.” While carefully preserving its original beauty, we combined Japanese aesthetics with the tranquil atmosphere of Scandinavia, aiming for a home where the interior and exterior blend seamlessly. A home develops alongside its inhabitants, so I’m excited to see what stories will unfold in this home. 1.
