【ほぼ貸切】島根の秘境にあった日本唯一の泊まれる博物館を体験|島根県奥出雲多根自然博物館
Experience Japan's only “museum you can stay in”! The hugely popular Night Museum is also held. The journey begins at Matsue Station in Shimane Prefecture. This time, we're heading to a “stay-in museum” nestled in a remote area. I'm taking the train, but it seems most people drive. Arrived at Shinjō Station from Matsue Station. Changed trains and headed for Izumo-Yashiro Station. There are no passengers… The Kisuki Line is a local line constantly rumored to be discontinued due to declining ridership and other factors. It took about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Matsue Station to arrive at Izumo-Yatsushiro Station. Snow is piled up! From here, we take a bus to the nearest station. And it's only 200 yen. I'll press the button near the closest station while checking Google Maps. Finally arrived at the museum! Okuizumo Tane Natural History Museum This natural history museum displays dinosaurs, fossils, minerals, and more. Hotel guests get free admission. At the entrance, a giant Allosaurus skeleton specimen welcomes visitors. The Okuizumo Tane Natural History Museum is a popular museum in Shimane Prefecture, attracting approximately 20,000 visitors annually. Check-in is at 4:00 PM. Since we still have time, we decide to explore the museum first. The museum's first floor is an exhibition space for dinosaurs and ancient creatures. The first thing that catches your eye is the armored dinosaur Euoplocephalus. Giant dinosaur skeletons, along with displays of rocks, minerals, and gemstones, line the space. The number of exhibits is a whopping 2,000 items. Near the dinosaur exhibits is an area themed around “The Evolution of the Universe and the History of Life.” Here, you can learn about Earth's 4-billion-year history and the evolution of life. Many creatures you've seen in textbooks during elementary and junior high school. Seems excellent for children's education. With fewer people, you can observe the exhibits at your leisure. Moving further in, you enter the “Time Tunnel” exploring Earth's history. The lighting instantly changes the atmosphere. Various rocks and minerals from around the world are on display. A giant amethyst like the ones you often see in stone shops. Seems like it would boost your luck. And there's even gold. It's interesting that they display it as raw ore. There are quite a few impressive things here. It's really fun. There's also a lot of history about Shimane Prefecture. As expected of Shimane. So many shells. I want some shijimi clam miso soup… After enjoying the first floor, head upstairs. The second floor displays marine life. What is this!? It's incredibly beautiful. The concept is that the root of life's diversity lies in the sea. Here too, marine life gathered from around the world is on display. Combined with the lighting atmosphere, it looks just like an art piece. In the back, fossils of ancient fish deeply involved in the birth of humankind are lined up. The scene resembles a fossil aquarium. It's incredibly mysterious. The exhibits range widely from extinct creatures to organisms that look somehow familiar. You can also see a strange exhibit where fish died en masse and fossilized right there. A fossil of a fish with bent bones. The numerous Lacorepis fossils found are actually placed directly on the floor. It's fun, making you feel like a kid again. This facility apparently housed staff during filming of the popular drama “VIVANT” in Shimane Prefecture. Going up to the next floor, there's a library corner and exhibits about Okuizumo. Mr. Tane Ryo, founder of ‘Meganeno Mitsuki’, was born in Okuizumo Town, Shimane Prefecture. This building was constructed based on Mr. Tane's desire to “create a ryokan in his hometown.” However, the “Paris Miki Okuizumo Store” operated at a loss and closed in 2023. Okuizumo Town currently faces depopulation due to declining birthrates and an aging population. It's 4 PM, so it's time to check in. There are regular rooms, but this time we decided to stay in the dinosaur room. Our room is 303. It seems the guest rooms are on the 3rd to 5th floors. It's nice that the museum and hotel are combined since it's cold outside. The Dinosaur Room is a triple room. Dinosaurs are displayed everywhere. Each Dinosaur Room features different dinosaurs displayed throughout. These rooms are popular with families traveling with children. The room includes a table and refrigerator, just like a standard hotel room. The drawer contains books written by Taneo Tane. Japan is Back. It's the phrase everyone's talking about right now. Amidst so much gloomy news, this is a book that energizes Japan. A popular hot spring facility is located nearby. But when I went, it was temporarily closed… What a bummer. There are no supermarkets or convenience stores nearby, so I'll be spending the whole day at this facility today. The room doesn't have a toilet or bath. There's a shared toilet and large bath on the same floor. It kinda reminds me of when I went to forest school. Even the toilet has dinosaur stickers. The sink area is also shared. There are vending machines and washing machines, so you can stay long-term. If you book in advance, you can add dinner and breakfast (separate charge). So, dinner time at the 6th-floor restaurant. Since there are no restaurants nearby, it's nice to have meals included. This facility received the Excellence Award at the 2024 Japan Tourism Awards. The tourism industry is taking notice of this new concept: a museum where you can stay overnight. Meals require advance reservations made at least two days prior. Dinner features the “Yaegaki Gozen” course: Shimane Wagyu beef and two-color maitake mushroom hot pot. The hot pot comes in two varieties: Japanese-style soy sauce broth and Western-style tomato broth. Locally made konjac and pickled takana greens. Chawanmushi (savory egg custard) made with eggs from a local poultry farm. For the hot pot meat, you can choose from three types: Shimane Wagyu beef, Okuizumo pork, or bone-in chicken. Alcohol and à la carte items can also be ordered separately. Okuizumo's specialty “maitake mushrooms” are a branded variety cultivated using water springing from the mountain foothills. This hot pot is gentle on the body, packed with plenty of vegetables. The vegetables include a variety like napa cabbage, mizuna, and onions. And today's star: Shimane Wagyu beef. This was my first time trying tomato hot pot, and it's super delicious! Enjoying two completely different flavors makes the meal really enjoyable. The soy sauce-based broth is also refreshing and tasty. The meat's umami comes through directly—it's incredibly tasty! The fish is saury, one of my favorites, prepared as saury saikyo-yaki! They serve it freshly cooked, so the fish is fluffy and incredibly tasty. The tomato hot pot was so delicious that we ordered an additional Western-style rice porridge set to finish off the meal. Each person gets their own pot, so you can enjoy it at your own pace, which is great. Rice refills are free. Oh my gosh!! The sense of indulgence is off the charts!! The Western-style set comes with bacon and grated cheese. I've created something truly outrageous… Finally, add beaten eggs and simmer briefly to finish. You absolutely must order the Western-style rice porridge set… This is insane. Way too delicious… Finished it in no time. I came on a weekday this time, and besides me, about 15 other people were staying. Seems college students and families come to stay. This day brought the strongest cold snap of the season. The temperature was a mere 0 degrees. Freezing!! Thankfully, the front desk sells drinks and snacks. Besides snacks and drinks, they also sell rocks and books about Okuizumo. You can also buy gems like diamonds and amethysts relatively cheaply. There's a wide variety of snacks and cup noodles too. The museum also seems to function as a convenience store. For guests, we also offer rentals of shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers, and more. ? A dinosaur mask? What is this?? Actually, hotel guests can participate in the Night Museum. Answer quizzes to get original museum goods. Borrow camouflage hats and flashlights to transform into an exploration team. The Night Museum dims the lighting compared to daytime. Whoa… This is kinda scary… The roars and footsteps of dinosaurs echoing through the halls create an atmosphere quite different from daytime. In fact, the museum's visitor count in 2010 was only about 3,000 people, making operations extremely difficult. The reality is that for many of the roughly 1,500 museums nationwide, admission fees alone don't even cover 10% of operating costs. Amidst this, the Night Museum, exclusive to overnight guests, began in 2010. Its otherworldly nighttime atmosphere became popular, boosting revenue to over ten times that of regular admission fees. The answers to the quiz are hidden somewhere within the museum. It's like a treasure hunt for answers, enjoyable even for adults. The Night Museum is held on the first and second floors. The Ocean Museum now has a deeper, more abyssal atmosphere. It has a slightly eerie feel, but you'll find yourself drawn to it, wanting to keep watching. The Night Museum is exclusively for overnight guests, open from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM for three hours. The quiz and prizes are company secrets, so be sure to stay overnight and give it a try. The tree decorations are subtly dinosaur-themed. After the Night Museum, it's back to the room for bath time. I got to enjoy the spacious bath all by myself. The next morning. This morning, sleet was falling. Breakfast was a Japanese-style set meal using an earthenware pot. The concept is “Enjoying the delicious Nita rice,” a brand rice the pride of Okuizumo Town. The variety is Koshihikari, boasting the best taste in Western Japan. Its rich sweetness and umami make it delicious even without side dishes. The miso soup is Shimane's specialty, “Clam Miso Soup.” Its gentle flavor permeates your body. Beyond just deliciousness, you can feel the dedication to each and every ingredient. The location is very remote, but it was an inn packed with charm you can only experience here. Check-out is at 10:00. We'll return by bus and train, just like on the way there. Note that you'll have to wait about an hour for the train at the station. Thank you for watching until the end.
