神奈川県伊勢原市を歩き、まず石倉神社に立ち寄った。関東大震災で倒壊した鳥居は1927年に再建され、小さな社には珍しい金属製の鳥居が立っている。時代を越えて残る姿に、地域の人々の思いが刻まれているようだった。鈴川にかかる崖下橋を渡れば、川が削った谷戸の地形が広がり、道端には馬頭観音がひっそりと祀られていた。周囲に広がるのはかつての田畑だが、今は耕作放棄地となり、暮らしの変化を物語っている。やがて高岳院跡地へ。1366年に創建された寺は60年前に廃寺となり、今はクラウドファンディングで再建が試みられている。境内の片隅には萩本欽一による植樹があり、「欽ちゃん寺」と呼ばれる所以となっていた。失われた伽藍は戻らないが、人々の祈りを取り戻そうとする動きが今も息づいている。歩く途中、囮の鳩に誘われた猛禽が罠にかかり、弱った姿を見せていた。自然と人の営みが重なり合う現実に胸を突かれる。最後に出会った叔母様観音は、この土地の由来を静かに伝え、過去と現在をつなぐ祈りの存在であり続けていた。
