【強風で抜港】乗船予定の船が目の前を通過！徳之島→沖永良部島 フェリー旅＆島旅
I traveled by ferry to Okinoerabu-jima Island. Seafood, Ruins, Banyan Trees, and Limestone Caves. However the return ferry couldn’t stop at the island! It’s morning on Tokunoshima Island. Today, I’m traveling to Okinoerabu-jima Island by ferry. This is 450 kilometers south of Kagoshima. Tokunoshima is located in the East China Sea. Okinoerabu is another 70 kilometers southwest. I’m returning the scooter I rented yesterday. Since the shop isn’t open yet, I should put the key in the mailbox. It’s about a 10-minute walk from here. I have arrived at the ferry terminal. The ferry I’m boarding is just arriving. The ship was built in 2012 and is 145 meters long. “Naminoue” The crew member throws a line from the ship to the wharf. This ship departed Kagoshima Port yesterday at 6:00 PM. After calling at Amami Oshima Island, the ship arrived here. The ship will then proceed to Okinoerabu, Yoron, and Okinawa Main Island. I will disembark at the next stop, Okinoerabu. Rope work at the wharf completed. The arrival at 9:10 AM is as scheduled. The port call time is 30 minutes. They need to load and unload cargo in a short time. A group of elementary school students is also boarding. Boarding procedures are required at the counter. Exit to the wharf from the first floor. Passengers board directly from the wharf. This method of boarding is common on many remote islands. Climb the stairs to the ship’s second deck. From the second deck to the third deck. Then take the escalator to the ship’s fourth deck. Passenger areas are on the fourth and fifth decks. This is the grand staircase with its open atrium. We will take our time exploring the ship later. The ship completes its turn and leaves the harbor. Passing between the breakwaters, the ship heads out into the East China Sea. The ship gradually increases its speed. It is open even outside of business hours. There are various types of menus. You can freely use the water heater and microwave oven. This is a “Second-class” cabin. The fare from Tokunoshima to Okinoerabu is $14. It’s comfortable if it’s not crowded. There is no grand bath, only showers. Shared toilets also lack bidets. Accessible restroom is available. The 5th-floor smoking room faces the sea. Let’s head back out to the external deck. Tokunoshima is now far behind us. Okinoerabu comes into view ahead. Let’s have tea in the cabin. Okinoerabu is a flat island formed by uplifted coral reefs. The ship enter the port located on the eastern part of the island. The ferry terminal comes into view. They prepared the line to throw to the wharf. Normally, the crew would throw it far onto the wharf. However, since the wind is strong today, he uses a line-launching gun. The line is being pulled smoothly. A rope is attached to the end of the line. They throw the second and third lines toward the wharf. They carry the rope to the bollard. He hooks the final rope with a long hook. He runs energetically with a rope. The ship arrived at 11:40 AM, ten minutes behind schedule. Let’s head back inside the ship. Passengers are waiting at the wharf. Passengers disembark via a retractable short staircase. It was a ferry trip of about 2 hours. It was over in a flash, but the cabin was comfortable. I disembark from the 4th floor lobby. Take the escalator and stairs to the second floor. I walk on the wharf to the ferry terminal. This ferry route operates with 4 vessels. I plan to head for Yoron Island tomorrow on a different ship. The port call time at Okinoerabu is 30 minutes. Let’s watch the departure. The ship turns while moving backward. I’ll be staying on Okinoerabu tonight. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the port to the town center. I’ll use a rental bike on this island too. I like motorcycle shops like this. I rent a 125cc scooter for $25 per 24 hours. Shall we have lunch first? This fresh fish restaurant is popular. She will now prepare this fish and serve it to me. This restaurant serves only fish landed on this island. Rare fish not commonly seen in Tokyo or Osaka are also offered. The sashimi set meal is an amazing value at $8. This is sashimi of five types of fish, including the one you saw earlier. After eating, I went to a nearby shrine. This shrine enshrines Saigo Takamori. He is one of the greatest heroes of the Meiji Restoration. This is the Saigo Takamori Memorial Museum. Saigo was exiled to this island for a year and a half. His prison life is recreated. After returning from this island, he achieved great accomplishments. The island’s tourism association raises goats. The junior high school building is quite stylish. This is the elementary school. Since there are almost no rivers on this island, springs were vital. This is one of the largest springs on this island. It has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Famous Waters. This ruin is the tomb of the 15th-century king of this island. After the 15th century, this island came under the rule of the King of Okinawa. Passing through the first gate, a vast courtyard appears. Passing through the second gate leads to the columbarium. This tomb was constructed from the island’s limestone. I’m staying at this hotel tonight. The check-in method is unique. If you call, staff will come here. The guest rooms are in the Okinawa-style building over there. This is the new wing opened in 2025. I booked it for $60 including breakfast. The room is filled with the pleasant scent of wood. It’s located in the city center but has a quiet atmosphere. The interior uses a lot of solid wood. The bathroom is spacious and looks easy to use. A small window offers a touch of greenery. The high ceilings create a sense of openness. The interior hallway is also fully air-conditioned. Coffee and tea are available in the inner corridor. Relaxing time in the courtyard. It started raining in the evening. I went for a walk and stopped by the nearby library. Let’s have dinner at this izakaya. Okinoerabu is also famous for its brown sugar shochu. This beer uses lily flowers as an ingredient. Chicken skin and papaya pickles. It was my first time eating wood ear mushroom sashimi. It rained all night long. The rain stopped by morning, but the wind is strong. I had breakfast at the hotel cafeteria. I plan to board the ship departing at noon. I arrived at one of the elementary schools on this island. This place was visited by the previous Emperor and Empress in 2017. This is the largest banyan tree in Japan. This school is open to visitors. You can hear the sounds of class coming from the classrooms. The first graduates of this school planted this tree in 1898. The tree’s branch spread is 22 meters, and the trunk circumference is 8 meters. This magnificent tree has been cherished by the local community for a long time. This island has Japan’s third-largest limestone cave. The cave is 3,500 meters long, with 600 meters open to the public. Admission fee is $9. Okinoerabu is an uplifted coral reef island. The entire island is made of limestone. Limestone eroded by rainwater created limestone caves. Over the long years, various shapes were formed. This rock is called the Island’s Banana. Each place has its own unique name. I walk about 600 meters inside the cave. There were no other visitors at all. Okinoerabu has an elevation of 240 meters. This observatory is the highest point on the island. You can clearly see the island’s flat terrain. I refueled the scooter and then returned it. It’s quite windy today. Just now, I received a phone call from the ferry company. Today’s ferry will operate under conditional service due to strong winds. The ship may pass by this island without stopping. It’s impossible to know until the last minute whether the ship can dock. The “Queen Coral Plus” is visible in the distance. Just now, an announcement was made that the ship will not dock. The captain determined that the ship could not dock. For ferries, safe navigation is the top priority. The ship receded into the distance. I had planned to stay one night on Yoron Island and then head to Naha. Of course, the plan must be changed. First, I’ll find a place to stay tonight. It also seems unclear whether tomorrow’s ferry will be able to dock.
奄美群島の徳之島から沖永良部島まで、フェリーで旅しました。
乗船したのはマルエーフェリー「波之上」。
徳之島を午前9時40分に出航し、沖永良部島には午前11時30分に到着します。
沖永良部島で1泊後、与論島へフェリーで移動する予定でした。
ところが乗船する予定の船が強風のため、沖永良部島に寄港せず通過。
旅にハプニングはつきものだと改めて実感した次第です。

Sei, wie es sei, mittlerweile sind Ihre Videos für mich Pflicht, weil sehr Nuancen reich und für mich so viel neues vom anderen Ende der Welt zu erfahren ist so fesselnd. Und eines muß ich auch einmal äußern, das Essen, selbst in der kleinsten Bude sieht immer so toll aus und schmeckt sicher gut.Das Fisch bei Euch einen hohen Stellenwert genießt, gefällt mir sowieso, ich bin selbst ein Anhänger von Fisch, allerdings gibt es in Deutschland nicht viel Meeresfisch, da leider die Überraschung so stark zugenommen hat. Aber es gibt sehr guten Binnenfisch in Old Germany, ich koche und genieße Ihn.Wieder eine sehr schöne Reise, auch als Betrachter.Es gibt immer viel neues zu betrachten und gerade die Inseln Japans sind sicher eine Reise wert! Wir haben in der ehemaligen DDR auch ein kleines Juwel, es ist die Insel Hiddensee, gleich neben Rügen, der größten Insel in der Ostsee. Dieser riesige Baum und die Tropfsteinhöhle, Klasse.Danke für Ihre Mühe und danke das Sie uns wieder mit genommen haben. Japanese ferries are the spiritual successors to the great oceanliners. When life allows me the time, I want to spend at least a month taking ferries around Japan. Cities are too crowded and noisy for me, so touring the southern islands looks like heaven. The geology and nature of volcanic vs coral reef islands also fascinates me; I would happily spend days looking at rocks and plants and bugs!

When I move back to Japan again in a few years I want to make ferry trips like this. Just my backpack and me.

Great trip. Finally the continuation of your island hopping trip is uploaded. Definitely agree, your room on this sailing is too huge, and most of your time at ship is always at public area and outside deck. When you mentioned that scooter just 125cc, I was surprised, since in my country, that similar scooters have engine around 155cc. That banana trees meaning you are getting closer to tropical area. Bit sad to see the ship is skipping the port due to weather, but on the other side, Kagoshima and Okinawa ship schedule is on daily basis, so that's mean if one ship is skipping your departure port, you can wait another day or waiting ferry for going back to previous island and from your previous island, take another ferry back to your next destination. I think similar things happened in my country, but the difference is, on some long distance ship route which the ship only available at selected week, or selected month, if this happens, the ship will be anchored at the safe distance, and the port will send some transfer boat for transferring passengers (usually fishing ship or wooden ship).
鹿児島〜那覇航路で湾の中に港がある鹿児島と那覇は
少しくらい時化になっても接岸出来ますが鹿児島、那覇以外の港は船が接岸が出来る沖合まで岸壁が突き出した先が港なので
時化になったら船が接岸するのは難しい。
船旅はこれがあるので計画が立て難いですよね。リカバリー能力が問われます。😅

抜港は災難だったけど、寄港地変更で知名になってかとが分かってからの移動もカナリ厳しいです。
徳之島の亀徳→平土野へよ寄港地変更は多分間に合わないはず。

奄美沖縄航路は、まだひと昔前の船旅の雰囲気が残っていて懐かしさを感じました。
母方の田舎で、子供の時は大阪弁天埠頭から関西汽船に乗って帰ってました。70年代初めは、港に船を着岸させる事が出来ず、沖で小型船に乗り換えていました。
映画寅さんで奄美大島でリリ―と過ごす回で、沖永良部島も撮影に使われました。ジッキョヌホーは、みつおが洗い物をする場面のロケ地です。
今は飛行機が便利になって、船を使う事が無くなってしまいましたが、もし沖永良部島から沖縄へ行くなら、又船を使いたくなりました。
波之上がまだ有るとは、知らなかったあけぼの、あかつきも、居ましたが?元県民より、与論 喜界島奄美行きました。
