Meoto-iwa in Wassamu Town

[The Meoto Iwa rocks were discovered in October 1903 by a group conducting a timber survey. From west to east, they consist of the approximately 10-meter-high “Onna-iwa” (Woman Rock) and “Otoko-iwa” (Man Rock), with a small “Ko-iwa” (Child Rock) to the east of the Man Rock. These three rocks are believed to be lava that erupted onto land due to volcanic activity approximately 1,300 years ago. Located atop a hill 323 meters high, about 7 km southwest of Wasamu’s city center, it offers views of Wasamu Town’s urban area and surrounding farmland. However, as of October 15, 2025, no tourist observation facilities or parking lots have been developed. Visitors must park their cars on the roadside near the “Meoto-iwa Promenade Entrance” and walk approximately 750 meters from there.
