奇岩群がそびえる高野堂は、耶馬日田英彦山国定公園内の景勝地「耶馬渓」に指定されています。
642年、法道仙人が仏法守護のため観音像、不動明王像、毘沙門天像を背負ってこの地を訪れ、それらを安置する堂宇を建立したと伝えられています。

koyado temple, with its towering group of strangely shaped rocks, is designated as a scenic spot called “Yabakei” within the Yaba-Hita-Hiko-san Quasi-National Park. It is said that in 642, the hermit Hodo visited this area carrying statues of Kannon, Acala, and Bishamonten on his back to protect Buddhism, and then erected a temple to house them.
