Kagoshima Prefecture / Kagoshima City
Hello everyone! This is Yukkuri Reimu and Yukkuri Marisa! Let’s enjoy a trip around Japan together again today! Where are we going this time? So exciting! Today we’re in Kyushu! We’re setting off on a trip to Kagoshima City in Kagoshima Prefecture! Kagoshima City! It’s where Sakurajima is, right? I’ve always wanted to go there! That’s right! It’s an amazing city where people live overlooking the active volcano Sakurajima. It was also the center of the Meiji Restoration. What, the Meiji Restoration too? It seems to have an amazing history, too! That’s right. Now, here’s a Kagoshima City quiz! Kagoshima City is known as “the XX of the Orient” because of its beautiful scenery. So, where is it? Eh!? In the Orient? Hmm… like the Hawaii of the Orient? Sorry, but no! It’s actually a city in Europe. Europe? I have no idea! The answer will be revealed in this video! That’s right! Also, if you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet, please do! Well then, let’s set off on our journey to Kagoshima City! Take your time, take your time
, take your time Basic Information What’s Kagoshima City like? Well, we’ve arrived in Kagoshima City! As we leave the station…wow! We can see Sakurajima right in front of us! Isn’t that an incredible view? This is the everyday view of Kagoshima City. It’s such a luxury to be able to see such a view every day! So, how big is Kagoshima City? It has a population of about 593,000. It’s the prefectural capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, and in Kyushu it’s the third largest city after Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, and Kumamoto. What!? It’s that big!? 590,000 isn’t quite a big city! It is. Its area is about 547 square kilometers, which is surprisingly large. 547 square kilometers…I can’t imagine. How big is it? The entire 23 wards of Tokyo are about 627 square kilometers, so it’s close to that size. Amazing! So what’s the population density? That’s about 1,083 people per square kilometer. It feels like urban areas and nature coexist. It looks like a good balance! What other cities are nearby? It’s surrounded by Aira City, Satsumasendai City, Ibusuki City, Tarumi City, Minamisatsuma City, Minamikyushu City, and Hioki City. As the center of Kagoshima Prefecture, it has deep ties with the surrounding cities. It really feels like the center of Kagoshima Prefecture! So, I want to know the history of this city! History and Origins In this story of Kagoshima going back in time , let’s go back in time and trace the history of Kagoshima City. Exciting! What kind of history does it have? Actually, Kagoshima City was incorporated as a city on April 1, 1889, making it one of Japan’s first 31 cities. What!? One of Japan’s first cities!? It has an incredible history! That’s right. During the Edo period, it flourished as a castle town for the Satsuma Domain and was one of the centers of the Meiji Restoration. Meiji Restoration! It’s a place where many famous people, like Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, lived! That’s right! Great figures who influenced Japanese history, like Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi, and Togo Heihachiro, were born here. Amazing! By the way, why is the name “Kagoshima” made up of deer and island? Interestingly, there are several theories about it. What, multiple? That’s right. One theory is that it comes from Emperor Jimmu hunting deer here during his tour and then landing on the island. Another theory is that Emperor Keiko also hunted deer during his campaign against the Kumaso. Both are stories of deer hunting! Other theories include that Sakurajima was once called “Kagoshima,” and that it’s a corruption of “Kakoshima,” which refers to Kagoshima Bay. Wow! I don’t know which one is true, but each one has its own romantic charm. That’s right. The mysteries of history are also part of the fun. Now, one thing we shouldn’t forget about the history of Kagoshima City is the 1914 Taisho Eruption of Sakurajima. The Taisho Eruption? What kind of eruption was it? It was a huge eruption, and it connected Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula. What!? An island became connected to the mainland!? That’s the power of nature…I see. Then in 1945, there was the Great Kagoshima Air Raid, and most of the city was burned down. So there was a tragic history… but it was rebuilt beautifully, and modern-day Kagoshima City exists. In 2004, the Kyushu Shinkansen partially opened between Shin-Yatsushiro Station and Kagoshima-Chuo Station, and the entire line opened in 2011. It’s now easier to get around by Shinkansen! By the way, in 2004, the city expanded significantly by merging Sakurajima Town, Yoshida Town, Kiire Town, Matsumoto Town, and Koriyama Town. This is how the vast Kagoshima City we know today became. That’s how it got bigger. Learning about its history will make you love this city even more! Tourist Spots Experience the Charm of Kagoshima City! Now, let’s go sightseeing in Kagoshima City! Where should we start? First of all, it’s Sakurajima! It’s about a 15-minute ferry ride away. Wow! Seeing Sakurajima up close is so impressive! Smoke is still rising! That’s right. Sakurajima is an active volcano and a symbol of Kagoshima City. It feels like the locals live with Sakurajima. Does volcanic ash fall sometimes? Yes, it does. That’s why Kagoshima residents take precautions against volcanic ash on a daily basis. But that’s also part of what makes Kagoshima unique. Awesome! Where else would you recommend? Next up is Sengan-en Garden. This Japanese garden was built on the site of the Shimazu family’s villa and is registered as a World Heritage Site. A World Heritage Site?! It’s one of the components of the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.” The view of Sakurajima from here is spectacular; you can see it over the garden. Wow! It looks amazing even just from looking at photos! I want to go there in person! Also, I recommend Shiroyama Park. From here, there’s an observation deck with a panoramic view of Kagoshima city, Sakurajima, and Kinko Bay. It’s a panoramic view! The night view seems beautiful, too! That’s right. This is actually the site of the final fierce battle of the Seinan War. It’s also known as the place where Saigo Takamori committed suicide. It’s a historical site… Also, Kagoshima Aquarium is great. It exhibits marine life from Kinko Bay and the Ryukyu Islands, and is famous for its whale sharks. Whale sharks! They look big and impressive! It seems like it would be fun for both kids and adults! That’s right. : Then there’s Tenmonkan, the largest downtown area in Kagoshima Prefecture, and the center of shopping and dining. It’s an arcade street, so it’s safe even on rainy days. You can enjoy shopping there too! Oh, there’s also a bronze statue of Saigo Takamori, right? Of course! It’s a symbolic statue of Kagoshima City, and a popular spot for tourists to take commemorative photos. I definitely want to take a photo there! I’ll reveal the answer to that quiz from earlier. Kagoshima City is known as the “Naples of the Orient”! Naples! Naples in Italy!? That’s right. It got its name because the landscape formed by Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima resembles the view of the Bay of Naples in Italy and Mount Vesuvius. I see! The combination of the sea and the volcano certainly does look similar! It’s a romantic name! Food and Specialties Enjoy Kagoshima’s exquisite food! I had fun sightseeing, but now I’m hungry! What Kagoshima food do you recommend? Speaking of Kagoshima, the first thing that comes to mind is Kurobuta pork! Kagoshima Kurobuta pork is a nationally famous brand of pork. Kurobuta! Looks delicious! What kinds of dishes are there? It can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as tonkatsu, shabu-shabu, and kakuni. Tonkatsu in particular is exquisite, with its tender, sweet meat. Wow! I want to try it! What else? Satsumaage is also famous. In Kagoshima, it’s sometimes called “tsukeage.” Tsukeage? What a funny name! It’s deep-fried fish paste, and it’s delicious on its own, or added to oden. It makes a great souvenir! And let’s not forget the local dish, “tonkotsu.” What? Isn’t it tonkotsu ramen? No, it’s not! Kagoshima’s “tonkotsu” is a dish made by simmering pork on the bone in brown sugar and shochu. It’s sweet and spicy, and goes great with rice. Wow! They’re completely different! Looks delicious! And “silver lance” is also a specialty of Kagoshima. It’s a small fish, but it’s delicious when eaten as sashimi or tempura. Silver lance! Fresh seafood! And the desserts are good too. Have you heard of “polar bear”? Polar bear? It’s not an animal, is it? It’s shaved ice! It’s a dessert that originated in Kagoshima, made of shaved ice poured with condensed milk and topped with fruit and red beans. It’s the best to eat in the summer. Wow! It looks so cute! I want to eat it! Also, “Jambo Mochi” is good. It’s a simple snack of rice cakes skewered on two skewers and covered in a sweet and spicy sauce. Jambo Mochi! The name is cute, too! Another famous local product is “imo shochu” (sweet potato shochu). Kagoshima is a sweet potato producing region, so there are a wide variety of imo shochu. Alcohol lovers will be delighted! Karukan is a Japanese sweet that is also a local specialty of Kagoshima. It is a fluffy steamed confectionery made from yam and rice flour, and has a refined sweetness. It makes a great souvenir! Which Kagoshima delicacy are you interested in? Let me know in the comments! Another interesting thing is the Sakurajima Daikon, grown on Sakurajima. Sakurajima Daikon? Is it different from a regular daikon? It’s amazing, it’s been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest daikon! What!? The world’s largest!? How big is it!? The biggest ones can weigh over 30 kilograms. 30 kilograms!? I couldn’t carry it! That’s amazing! Culture & Tradition I’d also like to know about Kagoshima’s festivals and events that allow you to enjoy Kagoshima throughout the seasons ! So, let’s introduce Kagoshima culture throughout the seasons. Let’s start with spring. What is Kagoshima like in spring? In spring, the cherry blossoms are at their peak at Shiroyama Park and Sengan-en Garden. The combination of the cherry blossoms and Sakurajima is spectacular. Wow! Cherry blossoms and Sakurajima! They look great in photos! The fresh greenery is beautiful, making it the perfect season for a stroll. So what about summer? Well, in late August, the Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival is held. It’s a massive fireworks display set in Kinko Bay, and the fireworks launched against the backdrop of Sakurajima are a spectacular sight. Wow! The ocean, Sakurajima, and fireworks! What a great location! Also, in July, there’s a summer festival called Rokugatsudo (July Lantern Festival). Rokugatsudo? July, but it’s June? Because it’s June according to the lunar calendar. It’s a traditional summer festival where lanterns are decorated at shrines and temples in Kagoshima Prefecture, and votive dances and other events are held. There are lots of lanterns lit! It’s fantastical and wonderful! In summer, you can also enjoy swimming and marine sports at Sakurajima. Swimming near an active volcano feels a little strange! What about autumn? In autumn, the Ohara Festival is the best! It’s one of the largest festivals in southern Kyushu, held in early November. The largest in southern Kyushu!? It’s an incredible scale! It’s famous for the “Soodori” dance, where about 20,000 people dance through the city to the “Ohara Bushi” song. Tourists are welcome to join in too. 20,000 people?! That sounds impressive! I’d love to join in too! The autumn leaves at Sengan-en are beautiful, and the pleasant weather makes strolling fun. So, what about winter? The “Minato Odori Park Illumination” is held from December to January. It’s a light-filled event that colors Kagoshima in the winter. Illuminations! Romantic! Perfect for a date! Kagoshima’s mild climate makes it relatively comfortable even in the winter. Sometimes you can see a snowy landscape with Sakurajima in the background, which is a rare sight in itself. Sakurajima in the snow! A rare sight! There are also plenty of hot springs, so warming up in a hot spring is great in the winter. It can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons! Which season would you like to visit Kagoshima? Let me know in the comments! Kagoshima even has a promotional mascot named “Guribu.” Guribu? What a cute name! What kind of character is he? He’s the promotional mascot for Kagoshima Prefecture, and he’s based on a black pig. He appears at various events. A black pig character! So Kagoshima-esque, isn’t he? Modern Initiatives: Kagoshima City: Heading into the Future I’d like to know more about what Kagoshima City is up to now! What initiatives are they taking? With a population of approximately 590,000, it continues to develop as the central city of Kagoshima Prefecture. It’s sure to continue to grow! They’re also focusing on tourism promotion, promoting initiatives that utilize tourist resources like Sakurajima and Sengan-en Garden. Sengan-en Garden, a World Heritage Site, in particular, is visited by many tourists from both Japan and abroad. The power of World Heritage sites is incredible! Also, the heritage of the Shuseikan Project, which was promoted by the Satsuma Domain, is attracting attention as a “Meiji Industrial Revolution Heritage Site.” The former Shuseikan, the Terayama Charcoal Kiln Ruins, and the Sekiyoshi Irrigation Canal are registered as World Heritage Sites. Wow! Kagoshima contributed to the modernization of Japan! That’s right. The Satsuma Domain built Japan’s first Western-style factories at the end of the Edo period, laying the foundation for Japan’s Industrial Revolution. History and the present are connected! Also, streetcars still serve as an important means of transportation for local residents in the city center. They’re convenient for tourists, and their retro atmosphere makes them popular. Streetcars! They have such charm! I’d love to ride one! I ‘m sure they’ll continue to be cherished as an environmentally friendly means of transportation. I’m looking forward to seeing you again, Kagoshima! Ending: See you again, Kagoshima! Well, our trip to Kagoshima City is almost over. How was your trip? Kagoshima City was truly fascinating. The unique lifestyle coexisting with Sakurajima, its rich history, and its delicious cuisine were all wonderful. I was very satisfied! I was particularly impressed by the impressive Sakurajima and the black pork dishes! The scenery, known as the “Naples of the Orient,” was also truly beautiful. The combination of the sea and the volcano is a spectacular sight you won’t see anywhere else. I also learned a lot about the history of the Meiji Restoration! So Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi were active here. That’s right. History, nature, food, and culture—it’s a city packed with everything. Where in Kagoshima City would you like to visit? Let me know in the comments! Sakurajima? Sengan-en? Or maybe a gourmet tour of Tenmonkan? If you’ve been to Kagoshima City, please share your memories in the comments! This channel introduces cities, towns, and villages all over Japan, so please subscribe! I’d also love it if you’d like! It encourages me to make the next video! So, where should I go on my next trip? I’m looking forward to it! Finally, I’ll say something in Kagoshima dialect. In Kagoshima dialect, “thank you” is “aiga to sage mo shita.” “aiga to sage mo shita”! I like how polite it sounds. So, did you all enjoy your trip to Kagoshima City? Thank you and see you on the next trip! soon !
