2025年 泊まって良かった温泉旅館 BEST5|温泉ソムリエが選ぶ“絶対ハズさない湯宿”Top 5 Onsen Ryokan I Stayed in 2025 by Onsen Sommelier

Selected by a hot spring sommelier Top 5 Hot Spring Inns to Visit in 2025 Review of my actual stay experience This is Ryo. In this video, from the hot spring inns I stayed at this year, I’ll be introducing five that I felt were truly outstanding. For the ranking, I scored each place on eight factors: the inn itself, food, hot springs, hospitality, service, price, sightseeing, and location, and then ranked them by their total score. Of course, this is only my personal and subjective evaluation, but I’ll do my best to clearly share what makes each place special, so I hope you’ll stay with me until the end. I’ve also put links to the full videos of each inn in the description, so if you’d like to know more, please take a look at those as well. All right, let’s get started with number five. A hidden hot spring town that shines in winter, but I don’t really want to tell you about it First up is Honke Bankyu in Yunishigawa Onsen, a hidden gem deep in Tochigi, even farther into the mountains beyond Nikko and Kinugawa. All guest rooms face the Yunishigawa River, with a breathtaking winter view of the vine bridge and frozen waterfalls. This area is also known as a historic refuge where the defeated Heike clan are said to have hidden after the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The slightly otherworldly atmosphere may well come from that background. Stepping inside feels like time-traveling back to the Edo period, with a nostalgic world unfolding around you. Soaking in an open-air bath in such a setting is the very definition of an extraordinary escape. And like a scene from a movie, crossing the vine bridge takes you to the Heike Kakurekan annex, where you can enjoy irori hearth kaiseki, a specialty of this snowy region. In winter, the famous Kamakura Snow Hut Festival is also spectacular. Bathed in the glow of snow lanterns, Yunishigawa turns into a true fantasy world. Getting there is a little inconvenient, but that’s exactly what gives it its remote, hidden feel and deep sense of history. It’s a traditional inn I particularly recommend visiting in winter. A luxury hotel in Hakodate with stunning views and authentic cloudy water Next on the list is Century Marina Hakodate, located in Hakodate. It’s more of a luxury hotel than a classic onsen ryokan, but the quality of its springs rivals hot spring inns, the views from the rooms are stunning, and its excellent access to nearby sights earned it a special place in this ranking. Just look at this view from the room. Through the huge corner windows you can see Mt. Hakodate and the harbor spread out below, and the night view is wonderfully romantic. What really made it feel on par with top hot spring inns for me was its rich, cloudy water from its own private spring. The water is a strong sodium chloride hot spring with a pH of 6.2, and after bathing your skin feels moist and silky smooth. It’s truly a first-rate hot spring worthy of being called a famous bath. The location is also outstanding. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the Bay Area, and only five minutes on foot to Hakodate Station, making it a perfect base for sightseeing. The price is on the higher side though, so I’d recommend it especially for anniversaries or special trips. Now, let’s move on to the top three. A luxury inn in Sengokuhara, Hakone, with amazing dining presentation In third place is Wano Auberge Kitanokaze Saryou, nestled in the cool highlands of Hakone Sengokuhara. It features a refined Japanese-modern design, and nearby attractions like the Glass Forest Museum are all within walking distance. On-site, you’ll find private baths and piping-hot ganbanyoku stone saunas, creating plenty of ways to relax. But above all, the playful dinner presentation is a major highlight. It’s the perfect place for anniversaries or other special trips. The inn sits on expansive grounds with only ten guest rooms in total, so every room offers a generous amount of space. This time we stayed in a three-room suite with its own open-air bath. The room even came with its own wine cellar. The open-air bath is wrapped in colorful forest and absolute tranquility. The spring water, a pH 2.1 acidic hot spring piped from Owakudani, is rich in sulfate and metasilicic acid, making for a smooth, skin-beautifying soak. On top of that, this suite also has a lukewarm spring-fed bath and a private sauna. It truly lives up to the name of a “hot spring suite.” Another standout feature is the dinner served in a luxurious private dining room. The dishes are not only delicious, but beautifully plated as well— it truly feels like staying at an auberge. And as a bonus, our stay happened to coincide with a treasure hunt event, and we even received some lovely prizes. It was also my wife’s birthday, and the staff prepared a special birthday plate for her, so both the hospitality and the service were easily five-star. A hidden hot spring in Yamagata that only a few know about In second place is Maruya Ryokan, a long-established inn founded in 1868 in Hijiori Onsen, Yamagata. Hijiori Onsen is a quiet hot spring town tucked away in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. It developed in a rare caldera-shaped basin known as the “Hijiori Caldera.” The geothermal activity here feeds springs rich in minerals, providing a truly authentic bath that even hardcore onsen fans will rave about. The town is filled with a retro Showa-era atmosphere, and it has a nostalgic charm that tugs at the heart. At Hijiori Onsen, Maruya Ryokan lets you fully enjoy both the abundant spring water and authentic local cuisine. Step inside the inn and you’re greeted by warm wood textures and a retro interior, creating a calm, welcoming space that instantly captures your heart. We stayed in a three-room suite with its own hinoki cypress bath. It’s a traditional layout, tastefully updated into a modern Japanese style. The star of the room, of course, is the fragrant hinoki bath lavishly crafted from Aomori cypress. Hijiori’s hot spring water is high in salt and excellent at retaining warmth, so it’s known as an onsen that really heats you to the core. This perfectly milky, cloudy color— you just can’t get enough of it. The temperature is a bit on the hot side, making it paradise for those who love a piping-hot soak. In addition to the large indoor and open-air baths, there’s also a free private bath, so you can enjoy the hot springs to your heart’s content. And then there’s the food. The meals feature Yamagata’s bounty: imoni stew, sweetfish, mountain vegetables, natto soup, and more— a parade of hearty local dishes. Having Yamagata wagyu beef as the main course is another big plus. It’s a hidden paradise where both body and soul can unwind— that’s the phrase that best describes this hot spring inn. And now, it’s time for first place. A hidden inn in the famous Shiobara Onsen hot springs, with stylish rooms all detached Number one is Hanare no Yado Kaede-ne in Shiobara Onsen, an inn I absolutely love. Every room faces the Hokigawa River, the symbol of Shiobara, and incredibly, all guest rooms are detached suites with their own open-air baths. Inside, it’s one stylish space after another, and I’m sure couples will naturally find themselves wrapped in a romantic mood. Here is a footbath where you can relax while taking in the view. Isn’t it incredibly chic? There’s also a sauna, stone spa, and even a full gym, so the property is packed with facilities you’ll never get bored of. We stayed in a special room with its own open-air bath. It’s a two-room Japanese-Western suite with a floor area of 74.5 square meters. There are also maisonette-type rooms with outstanding views. Our room even had a large private garden, with the Hokigawa River flowing right in front of us. And, there’s a spacious stone open-air bath overlooking the garden and scenery. With steam rising and snowflakes falling, we enjoyed sake in the bath from a tokkuri floating in the hot water. This snow-view sake service is included at no extra charge. The water is neutral, with a pH of 7.5. It has a wonderful balance of aroma and salt content, and is rich in chloride, bicarbonate, and metasilicic acid, making it great for the skin. The texture is incredibly smooth and velvety, and I ended up soaking in it seven times during our stay—it was that good. Meals are served in a delightful private dining room. Dinner is creative kaiseki cuisine using a wide variety of ingredients, with A5-grade Tochigi wagyu beef as the main meat dish. The “treasure box” course presentation makes the experience even more fun. And, they even prepare a chimaki rice snack as a late-night treat. For me personally, the facilities, the room, the hot springs, the food, the hospitality, and the service— everything was perfect. It’s an ideal hideaway for making special memories, and one I can wholeheartedly recommend. So in this video, I’ve shared five hot spring inns I stayed at in 2025 that I felt were especially wonderful. I hope to visit as many hot springs as I can next year as well and continue bringing you my reviews. If you enjoyed this video, please consider subscribing and giving it a thumbs up.
