【尾道×しまなみ】心ほどける瀬戸内の絶景旅|千光寺展望・海街の光・しまなみの島々
Leaving Gifu behind, the approximately five-hour journey to Onomichi is a constant, endless highway. Even the length becomes part of the journey. Onomichi is located on the Seto Inland Sea side of Hiroshima Prefecture. After arriving, I walk toward Onomichi City Hall. The building comes into view. It resembles a floating ship on the sea . The view from City Hall already gives you a glimpse of Onomichi! Hungry, I head for lunch. I order a regular-sized bowl of Onomichi ramen at Hajime, a beloved local ramen shop . Beyond the steam, I can sense the rich aroma of Onomichi , yet somehow gentle. The soup is thick and well-coated, and the delicious soy sauce permeates the thin noodles . It’s a truly delightful experience, a truly local experience. I head for the Senkoji Ropeway. I wonder if I’ll see the yellow train coming through Hondori Shopping Street … I’ll hurry for now, so I’ll try again later. 😉 I head right on Route 2. I pass under the railroad tracks and head toward the Senkoji Ropeway station. The standard route seems to be to take the ropeway up and walk down. The view of Onomichi slowly recedes into the distance . The view from Senkoji Observatory: The beautiful way the light shines in! Mukojima is nearby, and Onomichi , where the sea and the city blend together , is breathtakingly beautiful . I was able to see the autumn leaves here! A walking path dotted around Mount Senkoji, with words by writers with ties to Onomichi carved into the natural stones. We passed through the Literary Path and headed towards Senkoji Temple. There’s a tree that looks like an animal. The view from here is also amazing! Descending these stairs leads to Senkoji Temple. Kagamiiwa (Mirror Rock), once revered as a rock that reflects light like a mirror and is believed to house a god. Senkoji Temple is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in 806. It is located in the center of Senkoji Park, which spreads across the mountainside. Tsuzumiiwa (Drum Rock), also known as “Ponpon Rock,” produces a drum-like sound when struck. Since ancient times, many have heard the sound of this hollow and have pondered the rock’s mysterious mystery. It certainly does sound like a drum! The view from the top of Tsuzumiiwa Rock: The Onomichi! There are footprints of famous people lined up. It’s a fairly steep slope. We continue downhill. “Onomichi Guesthouse Miharashitei” is a guesthouse renovated from a 100-year-old traditional Japanese house. I wanted to visit the cafe on the first floor, but it was full. 😢 Apparently, it was originally a five-story pagoda, but the two most damaged upper stories were removed and remodeled into a three-story pagoda. The view is like something straight out of a postcard. We set off to find Neko no Hosomichi. Neko no Hosomichi is a narrow alleyway stretching about 200 meters. It leads from the Tenneiji Temple Three-Story Pagoda to the Maneki-neko Art Museum. Perhaps because it was late, we didn’t see any real cats. 😢 This building has a Ghibli vibe! Shunji Sonoyama’s “Lucky Stone Cat” was placed there, and it became known as Neko no Hosomichi. Neko no Yokocho is Onomichi’s hub for food, art, and film. This gallery and dining hall, renovated from a former Maritime Technical Academy dormitory, offers dining in. 🐈⬛ Cat-related goods and art pieces are on display and for sale. Apparently, they have six cats, but unfortunately, they were closed on the day we visited…💤 This shop is filled with love for cats and Onomichi. I ordered honey lemon tea. The Onomichi lemons smelled wonderful! 😊 The cat-shaped spoon was adorable! 😉 The owner shared some great information about Onomichi’s beautiful night view. I’ll be sure to check it out later. Looking forward to it! 💓 The garden was also lovely, with cat-shaped artwork and plants. There was a huge camphor tree nearby. A hole had been drilled into the blocks to protect the tree. Apparently, that’s the Onomichi way. We headed to a shrine recommended at Neko no Yokocho. It’s said to be the first shrine built in Onomichi. It was the filming location for the films “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” and “Futari,” and is a famous shrine that was also featured in the anime “Kamichu.” The “Camphor Trees of Ushio Shrine” are designated a natural monument by Hiroshima Prefecture. This giant camphor tree is estimated to be 900 years old. I felt the history of Onomichi. I wondered if a yellow train would come… but it was a silver one. I was able to see it from another location! 🤣 Finally, we headed toward Onomichi’s night view. We passed through Hondori Shopping Street and headed toward the pier. We boarded the ferry to Mukojima. The fare is 100 yen per person, one way. (Cash only.) We boarded the ferry after dropping off passengers, bicycles, and cars from Mukojima. It was only about a 3-minute one-way trip, and we arrived in no time. We arrived at Mukojima. The ferry is an essential part of daily life. We walked up a nearby hill. This is the night view of Onomichi from Mukojima! The owner of Neko no Yokocho named it “Onomichi Orange.” It’s an incredibly beautiful orange night view. I’m grateful to the owner of Neko no Yokocho for letting me know about it. 🙏 It’s still beautiful even when we come down. We enjoyed the night view from the boat on the way back. The Onomichi Orange was amazing! 👍 I feel like half a day doesn’t quite capture the full experience of Onomichi. Tomorrow, as planned, we’ll tour the three Shimanami islands. Today, we’ll travel along the Shimanami Kaido, visiting Mukoujima, Innoshima, and Ikuchijima. The Shimanami Kaido is a roughly 60km route connecting Onomichi and Imabari. Nine bridges connect the islands, making it the only road in Japan where you can cross the strait by bicycle or on foot, making it a cyclist’s paradise. Since we’re short on energy and time, we’ll travel by car. First, we head to Takamiyama Observatory on Mukoujima, which the owner of Neko no Yokocho recommended. The view is truly spectacular! It’s speechless. The Seto Inland Sea flows quietly into your heart. This observation deck offers a spectacular view of the Seto Inland Sea. Next, we head to a retro spot I’ve been wanting to visit: a Showa-era retro soft drink factory established in 1930. It’s a popular stopover spot for travelers cycling along the Shimanami Kaido. The interior is full of Showa-era vibes, giving it a nostalgic feel… and they even sell nostalgic goods. That boombox brings back memories. I used to have an AIWA boombox 😌 I chose Margo Ramune and Fukubee Honey Lemon. You drink the ramune on the spot and return the bottle. Each bottle of ramune is handmade, making it exceptional 😊 Cross the Innoshima Bridge and head to Innoshima. Take the Innoshima North exit. Innoshima is famous for its hassaku oranges, and there are plenty of them along the road. We head under the Innoshima Bridge. There are autumn leaves 🍁 under the bridge. Next, we head to Hassakuya to eat hassaku daifuku. We arrive at Hassakuya! The Innoshima Bridge is right in front of us. This is a shop that many cyclists stop by. There are many signs inside the store. I found Nagasawa Masami’s autograph! I didn’t know a movie was filmed at Hassakuya. All of the hassaku daifuku are handmade. I bought hassaku daifuku and grape amanatsu daifuku. Coffee is complimentary. The perfect balance of the sourness of the hassaku and the sweetness of the white bean paste, and the texture of the mandarin mochi that wraps it is amazing! 😊 The grape amanatsu daifuku also has hassaku in it, and it’s delicious! I think I prefer the hassaku daifuku. Maybe even better than the strawberry daifuku. The hassaku daifuku was so tasty I bought some more! Next, I head to Innoshima Suigun Castle. A casual view caught my eye, so I stopped the car. I love views of the Seto Inland Sea like this. The shape of the birds soaring merrily through the sky is intriguing… Another cyclist spotted . We arrived at Innoshima Suigun Castle. It’s the only naval castle in Japan, displaying valuable materials related to the Murakami Pirates (Murakami Suigun), a designated Japanese Heritage Site. All areas are free to visit, except for the museum, which requires an admission fee. The corner turret displays photos of the Innoshima Suigun Festival, which is also free to visit. Touching the castle’s gate, history quietly breathes. We crossed Ikuchi Bridge to Ikuchijima. We got off at Ikuchijima Kita and headed for lunch. It was a restaurant with a view of the ocean. We ordered shrimp pasta with lemon and pepper flavor, squid pasta with mentaiko cream flavor, hot lemon, and mixed juice. The chopstick rests were cute! It was as delicious as any pasta restaurant! 😊 The refreshing lemon and pepper were a perfect harmony. It was the best pasta I’ve had recently! 😉 They even gave us a complimentary persimmon after the meal! Kosanji Temple is not a free Buddhist temple, but a tourist attraction with a religious theme. It is affectionately known as the “Mother’s Temple,” a place of gratitude to all mothers in the world. Many of the remaining temple buildings within the temple grounds are modeled after famous architecture. The five-story pagoda is modeled after the five-story pagoda at Muroji Temple in Nara (a National Treasure). The Koyomon Gate is modeled after the Yomeimon Gate at Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The Main Hall (a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property) is beautifully decorated with autumn foliage . It was built based on the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple in Uji, Kyoto. The Octagonal Hall (a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property) is modeled after the Yumedono Hall of Horyuji Temple in Nara, but is half the size. The autumn foliage was beautiful, so please enjoy it for a while. The Great Savior Kannon statue is modeled after the hidden Buddha Savior Kannon, the principal image of the Yumedono Hall of Horyuji Temple in Nara. Head to “The Hill of the Future Heart” within the Kosanji Temple grounds. You can go up by stairs, but we recommend taking the elevator. This vast garden is made of pure white marble and is the work of Kuiya Itto, a sculptor from Hiroshima Prefecture. The magnificent view of the Seto Inland Sea, looking down from this world of white, will leave a lasting impression of your trip. We head to Setoda Sunset Beach. As the name suggests, this is a beach where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. The yellow object is a work by the Island Art Museum, and its title is “To the Sky.” The 800m stretch of white sand and clear blue sea is one of the best in the Chugoku region, and it has been selected as one of the “88 Best Bathing Beaches in Japan.” The work is titled “Take a peek through clairvoyance, see the world from Setoda.” We enjoyed the beautiful sunset! Now we’re heading to Kurashiki. More about our trip to Kurashiki in the next video!
