Deep in the mountains of Higashiyoshino Village, Nara Prefecture, a clear stream breaks the silence as it flows into the grounds of Hakuba-dera Temple —the “Nageishi Falls.” First, pray at Mizubun Shrine. The short path from the temple to the back approach to the waterfall quietly demonstrates why this area has been revered as a sacred area since ancient times . A dignified cedar tree over 1,000 years old stands beside the waterfall, exuding the dignity of having watched over a millennium. The 15-meter waterfall, which falls over the Takino River, the source of the Hirano River, is a spectacular sight, as it plummets straight down, sending up a cloud of mist, like a pillar of light connecting heaven and earth. The name of this waterfall is said to have been derived from a mystical sight: a celestial maiden descended and threw the jade stone she was holding into the pool at the base of the falls . Listening to the sound of the water spreading out from the basin and feeling the cool air on your skin, you begin to feel as if the legend is not just an old tale, but is still floating in the air of this place. The straight lines of the waterfall are beautiful, and somehow it feels sacred and purifying. It is a place where you get the feeling that time slowly melts away in the midst of nature . The sound of the water flowing from this mystical waterfall calms the soul.

Deep in the mountains of Higashiyoshino Village, Nara Prefecture.
As if to break the silence, a single stream of clear water flows down into the grounds of Hakuba Temple – this is Nageishi Falls.
The 15-meter waterfall, which falls over the Takino River, the source of the Hirano River, is a spectacular sight as it plummets straight down, sending up spray, like a pillar of light connecting heaven and earth. The path leading to the falls is short and close to the parking lot. However, just one step beyond, you will find the reason why this place has been revered as a sacred area since ancient times quietly living on. Beside the falls, a cedar tree over 1,000 years old stands majestically, exuding the presence of having watched over it for a thousand years. A large zelkova tree beside the parking lot also has solid roots, emanating a presence like that of a guardian deity of the area.
The name of this waterfall is steeped in legend, and is still passed down to this day.
“A celestial maiden descended and threw the jade stone she was holding into the pool.” This mystical sight is said to be the origin of the waterfall’s name, “Throwing Stone.” Standing here, listening to the sound of the water spreading out at the pool and feeling the cool air on your skin, it feels as though this legend is not just an old tale, but is still floating in the air of this place. The straight lines of the waterfall are beautiful, and somehow they exude a sacred, cleansing aura. It’s a place where you feel as though time is slowly melting away in the midst of nature. Please enjoy the sound of the water from the mystical waterfall and the profound story of Higashiyoshino, home to the legend of the celestial maiden, along with the video.
