Entering the Hiba “Thousand-Bather” Bath What kind of world awaits us this time? As we pass through the tunnel… There lies a snowy land. And… the Jomon era? Walking through the Sannai-Maruyama Site (World Heritage) Yesterday we left Hachinohe Station and stayed at Makado Onsen This morning we begin exploring Jomon ruins Sannai-Maruyama is one of the largest Jomon sites in Japan You can see the remains of the large pillar foundations The actual pillar holes remain here Raised-floor dwellings line the area The inside looks warm Many valuable artifacts have been excavated The large plate-shaped clay figurine is an Important Cultural Property The Jomon period was a peaceful age without conflict Their way of life still speaks to us today Next, we head to Tsugaru-Nakasato to ride the Stove Train Jusan Lake is right near Tsugaru-Nakasato Station
Dazai Osamu called it “a puddle of loneliness” At the lakeside restaurant, we enjoy a full course of Nakadomari Mebaru There’s even a detailed guide on how to eat it properly Now it’s time for the Stove Train The Stove Train has arrived It looks a bit different from the pamphlet Well, that’s okay Every train has a “Run, Melos!” logo sign displayed on its front Dazai Osamu was born into a prominent family in this region The Stove Train departs The landscape is covered in snow, but locals say this is still “shallow” But what everyone is really waiting for is… The conductor grills dried squid on the stove A classic winter tradition of Tsugaru A nostalgic retro railway experience The conductor tears the hot squid for us—delicious! It felt like a 40-minute izakaya on wheels ♪ Arriving at Tsugaru-Goshogawara Station, we head to Hoshino Resorts We’ve arrived at Hoshino Resorts A pony welcomes us Aomoriya (Hoshino Resorts)—where I’ve always wanted to stay A spacious interior Colorful decorations everywhere Feels like arriving at a festival Even the amenity area is stylish A tree that serves apple juice Over there, you can choose from many kinds of yukata It looks like events are held here This is the entrance to the bath There are many exciting spots inside Plenty of places to enjoy drinks The baths… The open-air bath is absolutely wonderful The buffet is easy to navigate by ingredient
The dining space feels semi-private I ended up taking way too much food After dinner, we head to the Nebuta Show Filming during the show is not allowed Using shadows and digital art,
It was a large-scale, impressive performance Filming is allowed during the final greetings Many guests participated Shouting together: “Rassera! Rassera!” Hoshino’s Nebuta is handmade by the staff After the show, we take a night walk A gate next to the hotel leads straight into a park You can walk around the pond In the middle is a floating pavilion The mood is calm and atmospheric It seems we can enter the pavilion The Nebuta objects were beautifully lit The next morning, we visit Hirosaki Castle Park The mountain in the distance is Mt. Iwaki Dazai Osamu called it “the elegantly layered lady” The main keep has been moved
Due to stone wall repairs until late 2026 From near the original keep site,
Mt. Iwaki looked stunning Lunch is at a nearby French restaurant Hirosaki is famous for having many French restaurants
The staff kindly saw us off After lunch, we head to Sukayu Onsen We’re going to the Hiba Thousand-Bather Bath The bath lies at the foot of Mt. Hakkōda Deep in the mountains We’ve arrived The steamy Hiba bath is mixed-gender My wife rented a bathing slip for 500 yen It’s too steamy and fenced off to see inside
(This photo is from the pamphlet.) After finishing all our sightseeing, we head back to Hachinohe Station A giant rainbow appeared to send us off Winter Aomori
