November 23-25, 2025
Students from the University of Western Australia’s in the Discipline of Architecture participated in “Studio Japan,” a training program in Japan to study the relationship between disasters and architecture. Over approximately three weeks, they conducted field surveys of disaster-affected areas from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and learned traditional Japanese timber construction techniques (such as thatched roofs and Itakura). In the final leg of their journey in Yusuhara Town (Kochi Prefecture), they undertook a theatrical production based on their experiences. They performed the “Zone of the Unsaid” at the wooden theater “Yusuhara-za.”
