This was one of our favorite places we’ve visited in Japan so far. Even though this beautiful place is nicknamed the “Gates of Hell,” it really felt more like heaven. The Osorezan Temple and Hot Spring is one of the three holiest sites of Japan and was founded in the ninth century by Great Buddhist Master Jikaku Enin. The smell of sulfur from the natural hot springs was quite strong but it definitely did not detract from the beauty of this incredible place.

We went to the Gates of Hell. It did smell like sulphur but I am glad I went.
Where is this gate?
