I stayed at Yamagataza Takinami in Akayu Onsen, Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture.
Known for its gourmet cuisine and onsen keeper service, Takinami is a lodging rooted in local culture, promoting itself as a showcase for Yamagata by Yamagata residents.
The buildings are beautifully renovated former village headman’s residence, storehouse, and school building. While retaining the charm of the old wooden architecture, the space is impressive, showcasing a fusion of Japanese and modern styles, with Tendo Mokko, a local Yamagata specialty, and Scandinavian furniture.
I stayed in a room in the SAKURA building. This accommodation building was relocated from a wooden school building built in the Taisho era. It features a view facing the courtyard, high ceilings, and a comfortable, modern finish. The stone bath overlooking the lush courtyard was the deciding factor in my choice of room.
The meals served at Dining 1/365 are a feast of Yamagata cuisine, using local ingredients carefully selected by the chef. The beautifully presented meals captivate guests, and the menu, which deliberately lists only the ingredients, keeps them excited as they wonder what will be served next.
Not only the food, but the hot springs are also simply outstanding. Akayu Onsen’s exquisite water is not stored in tanks, but is instead distributed directly to the bathtubs. This system is focused on the freshness of the hot spring, and the newly-generated spring water, approximately 60 degrees Celsius, is temperature-adjusted by a bathkeeper without adding water, and is distributed to each room and the large public bath. The sulfur-containing water was gentle and had a faint sulfurous smell.
While many inns pursue comfort and a modern atmosphere, there are probably few in Japan that are so committed to both gourmet food and the quality of their hot springs. Takinami, where you can enjoy everything, may be an inn that meets all your needs. It’s easy to see why there are so many repeat customers.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to speak with many of the staff as I was busy photographing. Even though I was traveling alone, they arranged a special seat directly in front of the inn in the dining room so I could take photos, and I will always remember their heartwarming hospitality.
This inn is one I would like to return to again to enjoy Yamagata’s delicious food and wonderful hot springs.

Today, I am really missing Japan a lot, and I cannot wait untill February 28th, when we finally fly to Japan for 4 weeks again. So your beautiful video is much welcomed, as it gives me a mini trip to Japan.
The beautiful inari shrine is a place I would like to visit. One of my favorite religious places in Japan is the Taikodani Inari Shrine in Tsuwano, in Shimane-Ken. The beautiful torii gates remind me a bit of the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, but in Tsuwano, when I was there, there were only 2 other people there. A very memorable moment for me.
The ryokan looks very beautiful and I like the mixture of old and traditional, mixed with modern scandinavian touches. The food looks amazing, and I very much like it, when I can watch the food beeing prepared. A kaiseki meal is always a highlight for me, and as the menu is usually only in Japanese, every dish is a total surprise. Which is great. I like to be surprised and to discover new things, and try food item I have never had before. Sometimes, even after it something, I still dont know what it was, but that doesnt matter.
Your room is beautiful, and of course the highlight is the amazing rotemburo.
There are two things that are missing for me in this ryokan:
– there seems to be no public rotemburo
– and in the room, I would really like to have tatami mats. Tatami smell so good, and its a wonderful feeling to walk on them. I can enjoy this only in Japan, and there only in ryokans, so when I stay in a ryokan, I really wish to have a room with tatami mats on the floor. And I also prefer to sleep on a futon, instead of normal bed.
Danke für all deine schönen und stimmungsvollen Videos. Ich liebe diese ♥️
Yamagata has many such beautiful ryokans. Niigata's may be higher rated by professionals but they are also more commercialised and have many people.
Simply incredible architecture, with stunning furniture works. The meal I know is outstanding.
