Vol.172[SUB/4K]
Good morning! This is E-Ma. Continuing from last time, we’re back at Jozankei Onsen. Breakfast at the hotel. After a hearty meal, we’re ready for some sightseeing again today! (´ー`) We’ve just checked out. This time, we’re on a 3-night, 4-day trip to Hokkaido, “Toyako Onsen Edition.” It’s about 75 km from Jozankei Onsen to Toyako Onsen. We plan to stop at roadside stations along the way. The blue sky is starting to come into view! (*’▽’) We’ve been driving on National Route 230 for about 20 minutes. All we could see from the car window were autumnal trees and Japanese pampas grass, with hardly any buildings. We’ve arrived at the first roadside station. The shop had sweets, but there were also many jarred jams and condiments. Deep-fried sweet potatoes, a Nakayama Pass specialty, are very popular! (*’▽’) We’ll try some too! (´ー`) Deep-fried sweet potatoes are 500 yen. They also have ketchup, mayonnaise, salt, and other items. The soft, fluffy potatoes were covered in a crispy batter. It had a slight sweetness, like the batter on a corn dog. The potatoes were soft and fluffy, yet smooth, and very delicious (´ー`). We enjoyed our meal in the free lounge on the second floor. We had a great view of Mt. Yotei (*’▽’). The deep-fried sweet potato was quite large, so maybe we could share it? (^_^;). Driving about 30 minutes from the roadside station, Bouyou Nakayama, we entered the Rusutsu resort area, home to a ski resort, amusement park, and golf course. There are plenty of hotels and pensions, so it looks like it’s fun in both summer and winter (´ー`). I’ve only been to Hokkaido a few times, so there are many places I don’t know. Every scenery is fresh and fun (*’▽’). The wide, straight roads are typical of Hokkaido (*’▽’). It’s a lovely day for a drive (´ー`). We arrived at the roadside station. It’s cheap, but I can’t bring myself to buy anything to take home… This roadside station was newly renovated in April 2025, so it was beautiful. “Mr. Namikoshi Tokujiro.” Did you know? “The spirit of shiatsu is a mother’s heart.” There was a park behind the roadside station. It was lovely weather, so I decided to take a little walk. (^.^) Even though the park is so large and well-maintained, there was no one there. It really felt like a Hokkaido scene! ヽ(^o^)丿. The clouds hanging over Mount Yotei had vanished. Mount Yotei is also known as Ezo Fuji (Ezo Fuji) because of its beautiful resemblance to Mount Fuji. After about 15 minutes of driving from Roadside Station 230 Rusutsu, the next roadside station came into view. It’s a small roadside station. There’s an observation deck up ahead, so I decided to check it out. I got a good view of Lake Toya, where I was heading. (*’▽’) I continued on the straight road, wondering how far it would continue. I arrived at my next destination, but there were a lot of tourist buses parked there. (;・∀・) This is a tourist spot where you can get a panoramic view of Lake Toya, Nakajima Island, Mount Usu, and Mount Showa-Shinzan. There were way too many tourists (;・∀・). All I could hear was foreign languages, so I wondered if there were any other Japanese people there… I found a stamp pad at the back of the store (*’▽’). Got a stamp! Going through the building, there was an observation deck. Outside, there were also a lot of foreign tourists (´Д`). You could also see the hot spring town of Lake Toya, which we were heading to. Now, it was time to head to Lake Toya Hot Springs. We walked down the slope to the lakeside. This is where Lake Toya Hot Springs begins. “Wakasaimo” is a specialty of Lake Toya Hot Springs. It is a sweet made with the idea of ”making roasted sweet potatoes in a place where sweet potatoes cannot be grown.” It is made with daifuku beans, and the fiber found in sweet potatoes is represented by chopped kelp. They were also sold individually (´ー`). “Hakosu-kun” from “Wakasai Momonga”. Are you a flying squirrel? I tried the “Imoten,” a specialty of the Toyako Main Branch. One Imoten costs 180 yen. I knew it was “wakasaimo” tempura, but I was surprised at how sweet it was. (^▽^;) I wandered around to the back of the restaurant. There’s a monument marking the “Hokkaido Toyako Summit Declaration Site.” This is the site where the Hokkaido Toyako Summit was declared in July 2008. Mr. Abe… There’s a submerged railway track that seems to extend all the way to Mount Yotei. Lake Toya is Japan’s third largest caldera lake, formed by a massive eruption about 110,000 years ago. To the south of Lake Toya are Mount Usu and Mount Showa-Shinzan, both of which remain active. On March 31, 2000, there was an eruption at the western foot of Mount Usu. The following day, on April 1, there was also an eruption on the middle slopes of Mount Konpira, about 350 meters south of Toyako Onsen Town. The areas that sustained significant damage are still preserved as relics of the eruption. The massive eruption sent smoke rising 3,500 meters above the crater, generating cinders and hot mudflows. The mudflow washed away a bridge over National Route 230 as far as 87 meters, crashing into an apartment complex downstream. While the walking trail offers a close-up view of the washed-out bridge, apartment complex, and Konpira Crater, I decided to just look at them from here. (^_^;) After this, I wanted to visit the Volcano Science Museum, which is visible here, but it was closed on Mondays. (._.) Many facilities like this are closed on Mondays, so you have to be careful… (;´・ω・) I had some time, so I decided to take a drive to the nearby Showa-Shinzan. It’s about a 10-minute drive. Showa-Shinzan was formed when a wheat field rose during the 1943 eruption. I could see it now. (*’▽’) There was a parking lot at the back, but I saved myself the 500 yen parking fee and just looked at it from afar (^▽^;). The next day, I walked the same path and saw smoke coming out (゚Д゚). It’s an active volcano that could erupt at any time. It’s scary (;゚Д゚). I returned to the hot spring town. I arrived at my next destination: the Hokkaido Toyako Summit, held in 2008. There are tables and chairs actually used at the summit, so you can sit and take photos. On the same floor is the Geopark Gallery. It has a photo exhibition of not only Lake Toya but also geoparks from other prefectures, and it was more impressive than the Summit Memorial Hall (^_^;). It was time to check into the hotel. The hotel is located along the shore of Lake Toya. Room 506. Let’s go inside! It’s a Japanese-Western style room. From the window, you can see Lake Toya and Mount Yotei (*’▽’). The view is amazing (≧▽≦). I was mesmerized by the spectacular view, but I returned to the room tour. Isn’t it unusual to see the same series of items often seen in public baths on the bathroom sink in my room? Even if a hotel has a public bath, I always choose hotels with attached bathrooms in the rooms. Next up was a tour of the hotel. The lounge on the first floor offered a welcome drink of “shiso juice.” Cheers! “Dream Night & Dance Blue Lake.” I love the retro Showa-era name. (*´艸`) The public bath is just beyond the game corner. The women’s panoramic public bath is on the first floor. The men’s panoramic public bath and cave bath are in the basement. There’s a women’s cave bath, a rock sauna (additional fee), and a private bath. Since I had some time before dinner, I went outside. It was cold (>_<). Behind the hotel, on the shores of Lake Toya, is the "Toya Lake Sculpture Park." 58 sculptures are on display around the lake. "Doryu no Yu" (Doryu Bath). It's a footbath with a cute dragon statue. (´ー`) I discovered a great photo spot. (*'▽') This monument was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Lake Toya Onsen. The sightseeing boat dock. It's completely chilled, so I'll go buy some coffee at Seico Mart in front of the hotel (´ー`). It's dinner time. It wasn't a buffet today (´ー`). It was a seasonal Japanese meal. The kamameshi was delicious (´ー`). The 44th Lake Toya Long-Run Fireworks Festival. This fireworks festival took place every night for 20 minutes from the end of April to the end of October. The fireworks were launched from a boat. You could see them from your room, but... the boat launched the fireworks as it moved. The hotel staff told me that if I wanted to see the whole thing, it would be better to watch it from outside. If I watched from the same spot, the fireworks would get farther and farther away. From halfway through, I started moving around to watch. It was very cold, though... I'm so happy to be able to see fireworks in Hokkaido (´ー`). The next video will be about a 3-night, 4-day trip to Hokkaido, "Muroran Edition." I hope this video was helpful to you. If you enjoyed it, please like, hype, and subscribe! I look forward to your comments and opinions (´ー`). Thank you for watching until the end. Stay tuned for the next video~(^_^)/~
