【最新】アートトレイルで健康的な島アート巡り|高見島完全ガイド|瀬戸芸2025

Touring contemporary art around the world. We’re traveling around the world to see contemporary art. This time, we’re going to the Setouchi International Art Festival. Good morning. It’s the third day of the Setouchi Art Festival Autumn Festival. Today, we’re heading to our final destination, Takashima. The ferry to Takashima departs from Tako. We arrived about an hour from Takamatsu city. Today’s weather is rainy. The current temperature is 14°C, which is quite icy for October. So, I’m wearing a hoodie and a Gokudan jacket . By the way, this embroidery is an iron-on version of official Setouchi Art Museum merchandise. The ticket counter for Takashima was selling tickets in a container that looks like it’s exclusive to the Setouchi Art Museum. This time, we’re heading to the 11:00 a.m. special ferry. I bought a ticket to Takashima. It was a lucky 950 yen. Since we had some time before departure, we headed to the Setouchi Art Museum Information Center at Tako Port. This information center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. This seemed like a good place to get some information about Takashima beforehand. I received a Takashima guide map at the Setouchi Art Museum Information Center , and I’ll study it carefully on the boat. The ferry bound for Takashima has arrived, so we board immediately. It seems a little quieter here, thanks to Tenko. This is my first time seeing the art in the turtles since Ekimae Island. This time, the ferry is the Shin 2. It’s a fairly large boat that can accommodate 95 cars . It takes about 35 minutes from Tada to Takashima. Takashima is a small island with an area of 2.35 km and a population of 25. There’s an information center at the port, where you can get information about ferries and restaurants. The first thing that catches your eye upon disembarking at Takashima is Uchida’s work, Merry Gate. It’s actually designed with magnets in the triangular base, so it sways gently downwards when the wind blows . Upon arriving at Takumijima, we head to the general office. We present our passports here. After checking in, we begin our art tour. First, we climb this hill next to the reception desk . Takashima has many slopes, so it’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes. It’s quite steep, but we persevere. We’ve arrived at the former high school. Here we find the work we were looking forward to. This piece is called Alien Food . It’s an art project about food and the environment, inspired by the idea that “alien” means alien . You can actually eat the artwork here. Heading up to the second floor, you’ll find the exhibition room and dining area. The window displays the silhouette of an alien living on Takashima, while the Seto Inland Sea landscape can be seen outside. I immediately decided to order curry. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of curry will be served. When I ordered, I received a sticker . In front of the pickup counter were sauces and spices made with Takashima’s aliens. I decided to try both. The alien curry arrived. The flavor of the country and the spices were a perfect match, and it was delicious. It was a strange experience to eat and enjoy an alien, usually considered a weed. The spices used in the curry are also mentioned. The exhibition also talks about various aliens, making it a memorable exhibit that allows visitors to fully experience the island’s natural beauty while maintaining a good balance between human and social interaction. Now that my stomach is full, I resume my heart tour. Takashima has few flat land areas, with houses built on steep slopes and stone walls naturally eroded, preserving the island’s unique landscape. It’s a two-minute walk from the elementary school down a steep path. It appears that three artists are exhibiting works at this Comica. The first piece is located in the Hanare area next to Oya. Tanimoto’s “Memory Letter” is a two-part installation themed on Takashima’s memories . Tanimoto is an artist who paints and shapes everyday motifs in the form of letters , visualizing the chain of memories that emerge from them. It’s as if the memories of those who once lived here still hang out in small pieces . Another piece is on display at Oya. It’s Izumi’s “The days when you said you’re okay and the scene about the port.” This piece is a large eagle piece exhibited at Nakatsukatei in Takashima . The eagle is attached to a board and then painted with charcoal and rocks, creating a painting that evokes both elegance and drama. This time, based on a photograph of the moment the Sanpa Line set sail at the island’s port and the words ” Sanpa, accompanied by a guide for research, set out to sea no matter the weather, rain or storm,” the artist has created a large-scale painting that evokes the image of a small boat that likely traveled repeatedly throughout its journey, as well as the emotions of the people who saw it off. Also on display on the second floor is a work by Tadashi Hashimoto. In the darkness of Yaneura, a work made of wood and earth is on display. Takashima has a cemetery for both mother planets, divided into graves for burial and graves for prayer. Having heard that there was once a uya (a shrine) right next to the cemetery, the artist was inspired by the proximity of the two stations, the dead and babies, to a deep seabed where pre-tangible existences are connected. Light streaming in through the window and the cast shadows bring the shapes to light. The next piece is located inside the Komi House. Behind this door lies an unexpected work. This work, “The View Behind Mana 2022,” by Nozomi Murata. The countless thin lines stretching across the ceiling, floor, and walls are visible depending on the angle of the light. As your eyes adjust to the darkness, the vague lines gradually take on a three-dimensional shape, appearing to emerge from the depths of the house. The title, “Manaura,” refers to the back of your eyelids. The vague, fluctuating image that appears when you close your eyes. Within it, you can see the island scenery, memories of the house, and the presence of people. The artist recreates this through lines. Next up is the Komi House. Yusuke Asai’s work, “Arranging Earth.” This is Ai’s work, which has appeared several times in our videos . Ai creates his works using the soil of the land. This time, he is exhibiting three-dimensional works that resemble objects made from Takashima’s soil. In fact, Takashima Art Trail also has a work by Asai titled “Children of the Stars,” and small art pieces are displayed throughout the island . It was a very enjoyable experience, like a treasure hunt. The next work is located near Jibanyama, among Takashima’s art works. We proceed along steep stairs and mountain paths. Takashima Art Trail is a contemporary project organized by the Setouchi International Art Festival Executive Committee. The village of Takashima is filled with steep slopes and narrow staircases, allowing visitors to experience the artworks while trekking. The mountain and river are surrounded by four fences, and the roofs and trees on the garbage side create a sense of nature and the village landscape, allowing visitors to enjoy art while immersed in the scenery. We’ve arrived. This large Comica exhibit features works by two artists. This is Oda Shigeaki’s “House of Nose Voices.” The exhibit is located in Sukenaka House, an old private home that retains traces of the time when the area prospered through maid cultivation . From the moment you enter, the colors of the holes, the smells, and traces of past life overlap , creating the feeling of walking through the island’s memories. The large, expansive holes , the bold and powerful colors of the noses, while at the same time exuding a slightly nostalgic air, create a beauty that somehow accompanies everyday life, like a flower you might stumble upon while walking around Takashima. Then, upon ascending to the second floor, the artworks shift to the theme of time. Nishiyama Miko’s “Melting Dream Takashima Parfait” is dedicated to the women who have passed away. This installation, set in a quiet, small house in Takashima, sheds light on women who were once invisible . Nishiyama expresses the countless dreams that have vanished unspoken throughout Takashima’s history as if they were melting into a sweet parfait. Rather than being flashy, this work is art that conveys a strong sense of sadness and respect within its beauty. The story of the interloper is not limited to what is visible . We are greeted with a gentle yet sharp question: imagine the layers of the lives of nameless people . The rain is getting a little stronger. Takashima’s many slopes and staircases allow for views from above, so on clear days the views are likely even more spectacular. We’ve arrived at the next piece . Located inside Comica, a one-minute walk from the previous piece, this piece is called ” Fruit House” by Fujino Yumiko . Japanese paintings are inserted into the house’s very framework, utilizing the alcove, attic, and needles. The painting depicts objects left behind on the island, including cucumbers, tea bowls, fragments of letters, and kusahana flowers that bloomed in the garden. These objects, from different locations and locations , are gently placed side by side within the same canvas . When you go up to the second floor, you will see paintings arranged in the shape of an arrow, intersecting with needles. You will feel a sense of immersion, as if the house itself is spitting out old memories as paintings. You will be heading towards the next piece. It’s about a five-minute walk to the artwork. This piece, lined with postcards, is by Bankart 929+PHT. The artist visited homes on the island, photographed the ocean through their windows , and then exhibited them as postcards. Looking through each one, you can see the Setouchi Kai landscape, which changes depending on the time of day, season, and location, even on the same island of Takashima. Apparently, you can take one of these postcards home with you. We searched for our favorite among the many. We chose this one. And, surprisingly, by writing a message and going to Takashima Post Office , you can send a commemorative postcard with a Takashima stamp attached . Since we were there, we decided to send one to each fisherman to commemorate our completion of the entire Setouchi Ge area. We saw the artwork at the southern end of Takashima’s steep, narrow road, and descended to the coastline. It was raining today, so it was slippery and extremely difficult. The artwork came into view in the distance. That white, eastern platform-like structure appears to be the artwork. It’s a bird tower designed by Yusuke Omuro and designed by Miko Nakatani . Inside the tower, a bluebird in flight is embedded in the wall. The clay prototype is then sculpted with plaster and filled with resin. It’s a seaside tower that captures the presence of a bluebird while simultaneously releasing an eternally expanding world, leaving the viewer feeling alone . My next piece is located near Takashima Port, so I’m heading back there. On the way, I pass Takashima Post Office, so I’ll send the postcard I mentioned earlier. I ‘ll stamp this around here. Yes. It’ll be a nice keepsake, as it’ll have a Takashima stamp. I’m sure the recipient will be delighted. Since I stopped by the post office, I’ll go see the remaining pieces. I head toward the residential area past the port. And my heart tour is nearing its end. The rain has let up. Apparently, you can eat takote (octopus tea) nearby, though it wasn’t open today . We’ve arrived. It’s a two-minute walk from the port. This impressive little house is said to house the last piece of art in Takashima. I’ll head inside . It’s a work by Nakajima Kako. It’s an old house. The first thing that catches your eye upon entering is the light streaming straight in from outside the house. The house is permeated with transparent acrylic panels. The acrylic panels connect the outside world with the interior of the house, and the light filtering in cuts through the dark interior . The thinness of the Komica and the light filtering through the panels provoke viewers to question the very essence of time. It was a moment when Takashima’s slow pace of life was brought back to life through art. Having enjoyed the artwork so much, I decided to stop for a coffee at a nearby cafe . The warm coffee in this welcoming space, somehow reminiscent of returning to my parents’ home , warmed my chilled body. It was a feast. It was almost time for the ferry, so I headed to the port. Time flew by from Haka Station, and I felt a sense of accomplishment—and a sense of loneliness—for having conquered all the areas. I headed back on the 3:50 PM ferry. The ferry had arrived. I wondered if I’d come again in three years. This was my first time touring Nishijima in the fall. I also enjoyed the beautiful scenery. After about a 30-minute ferry ride, we finally arrived at the port. This concludes our Setouchi International Re-Art 10th Anniversary 2025. Although I wasn’t able to see all the works this time either, I was finally able to visit all the areas, something I was unable to do three years ago. I saw and touched the colors on every single island. Each and every experience enriched my art tour. I will definitely be able to see all the works in three years. Thank you for watching. At the next Seto International Gauge Festival, I will be heading to Shikokumura to meet the Kirifuku Pistols, an artist worthy of being recognized as a top performer.
