Japan Scenic Drive 4K | Shimabara Peninsula, Nagasaki (Tachibana Bay & Nita Pass)

The Shimabara Peninsula is located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.

This drive takes you to the heart of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki.
We’ll trace the shores of Tachibana Bay from Minami Kushiyama Terraced Fields Viewpoint and ascend Mt. Unzen, which literally grew after its 1990-1996 eruptions.
Its lava dome expanded, increasing the peak’s elevation from 1,359 m to 1,483 m in just a few years. While the 1991 pyroclastic flow was a tragic event, claiming 43 lives, today the mountain offers breathtaking views.

We’ll drive through the famous Unzen Onsen and reach Nita Pass, offering a unique glimpse into this dynamic landscape of the Shimabara Peninsula and Ariake Bay.

Shimabara is also a significant site in Japanese history, particularly in relation to Christianity.
The region was a center of early Portuguese Christian missionary activity in the 16th century and later became the stage for the Shimabara Rebellion in the 17th century.

The Shimabara Rebellion was a major uprising of peasants, many of whom were Christians.
It was a revolt against the harsh oppression and heavy taxes imposed by local feudal lords, particularly the Katsuie Matsukura clan.
Almost all of the 37,000 rebels were killed by the shogunate’s force. After the rebellion ended, Katsuie was also executed by the shogunate due to his responsibility for the harsh oppression of the peasants.
This event, however, led to the Tokugawa shogunate’s increased suppression of Christianity and its long period of national isolation.

    南串山は私のルーツの場所でもあり、私の父が眠っている場所でもあります。
    そして小浜は、父の実家でもあり、青春時代を過ごしたところでもあります。
    私が小さい頃は毎年お盆になると小浜に行きました。橘湾に沈む夕陽がとても素敵だったことを思い出しました。
    昔はあまりに田舎で好きではなかった場所…
    いまはなにものにも変え難い素敵なところ。
