[ 滋賀県 ] 近江八幡の風情漂う城下町を巡る、江戸時代の街並みとグルメを堪能する旅|八幡堀|琵琶湖|滋賀旅行
Today, we are in Omihachiman City, a merchant town that flourished
400 years ago. We are taking you on a journey to the streets of the Edo period. The Hachiman-bori Canal, which once delivered goods throughout Japan,
still preserves the atmosphere of that era. We can travel back in time and see almost the same scenery
as the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Isn’t that incredible? Omihachiman City: A castle town where people connect and history is woven. Now, let us guide you on a journey through time, full of old-world charm. Wow… It feels like we’ve completely time-traveled here. We just arrived after visiting La Collina. It only took about five minutes
by car, but the atmosphere changed completely in an instant. It was built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and it’s been
here all this time, right? What is Shinmachi Street?
A district lined with residences of “OmiMerchants”
who were active during the Edo period. “Omi Merchants” is a general term for merchants who had their main home in Omi and traveled to other provinces. You can truly feel the historical charm here. Even the roof tiles are incredible. All the buildings look so old. The wood is darkened with age. You can feel the long history. That door looked quite hard to close.
Look! Is that a storehouse? Look at that thick window! Residences on Shinmachi Street: Omi Merchant houses had solid windows
and lattices, and connected exterior walls, to protect the valuables
from thieves, fire, and temperature changes. There are gates like this everywhere, without gaps. It’s hard to tell
where one person’s house ends and another begins. But in some places, you can see signs for “Former [Name] Residence”
or “[Name] House,” indicating historical cultural assets. First, where are we heading? First, we’re heading towards the Hachiman-bori Canal, and then
to the Himure Hachimangu Shrine. Let’s go! Ah! It looks like there is one right there. This scenery has so much historical charm. It’s beautiful. We saw it right away. It was moving slowly. It’s so quiet here. This cobblestone… Apparently, this place was used as a setting for TV shows
like “Rurouni Kenshin” and “Mito Komon.” It’s been the stage
for various productions. Well, with this scenery, of course. This Hachiman-bori Canal
has its own history. A history? In the Azuchi-Momoyama period, Hidetsugu Toyotomi built a castle
on the top of Mt. Hachiman. At that time, he created a canal to connect to Lake Biwa to transport
goods by boat, which served a vital role in distribution. But as times changed, people could transport goods by carriage
or car, and the canal was no longer used, and the water became polluted.
Some people suggested filling it in, but… …the local people worked hard to clean and preserve it in its original form,
and now we can see it today. The strong desire of the local people to preserve their culture
has allowed us to see this wonderful place today,
traveling back in time to almost the same scenery
as the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Almost the same scenery as the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Isn’t that incredible? I’m sure this area was very busy back then. I bet there were so many boats… Beautiful… I was curious about this! Grilled mackerel on a shrimp cracker.
It smells so good like mackerel. It looks like it’s going to snap when I break it. It is difficult!
A piece broke off where I didn’t expect. Apparently, you eat it like a sandwich. Careful! It looks hard to eat… You can’t quite describe it? It’s delicious, but… I don’t know… The grilled mackerel is just simply delicious. The cracker adds
an interesting texture, but the mackerel is simply tasty. It’s an interesting combination. Right next door, there’s another “Taneya” shop. They said this is exclusive to this location. Not at La Collina. I’m going to try it! It’s piping hot! It’s chewy! They made it on something like a takoyaki maker.
Oh! This is delicious! I might really love this. If you sprinkle sesame seeds on it,
it would be like a sesame mochi. That’s it! It’s like a sesame dumpling
from Chinatown, but without the sesame. I really love this kind of mochi. It’s similar to Umegae Mochi
(a specialty of Dazaifu). Fukuoka… I could eat 10 more. We’ve arrived at the Hachimangu Shrine. Himure Hachimangu Shrine.
It’s magnificent. This is where the Omi Merchants came to worship their patron god. It’s very quiet. This area is amazing too. It’s a stage—a Noh stage—
where Kabuki might be performed. This has been here since ancient times. It’s incredible… The “Hi” in Himure Hachimangu means “sun,” and “mure” means
“to gather” or “flock.” So, it means “a place where the blessings
of the sun gather.” It’s considered very auspicious,
though there are various theories. History of Himure Hachimangu Shrine: The shrine was protected
by Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s nephew, Hidetsugu, as the general guardian
of the castle town. Omi Merchants prayed here for business
prosperity and safe travels before setting out. Can I ask you a quiz question? Hidetsugu Toyotomi was Hideyoshi’s nephew, his sister’s child.
He was once considered Hideyoshi’s successor, but then Hideyoshi
had his own child, so Hidetsugu became an obstacle, so to speak. Mt. Koya. Did you know that? I didn’t. It’s the Shingon Buddhist sect, and Kukai is there, so I thought,
“It has to be there!” You got that right away. The “Willow Room” there is also called the “Hidetsugu Suicide Room.”
The place where he committed seppuku is at Kongobu-ji Temple
on Mt. Koya. It’s sad… There are various theories, such as whether Hidetsugu was guilty
of misdeeds or not. But that is the history. It is a fact that Hidetsugu helped this castle town flourish, right?
That’s amazing. His castle was supposed to be over there, but it was torn down
after just 10 years. The Hachiman-bori Canal. It was a journey full of history.
Since this is a merchant town, I felt the merchants’ spirit,
or passion, like at La Collina. There was a strong enthusiasm from the people who worked
to preserve this canal. I apologize, but when I think of Shiga, I only imagine Lake Biwa
or Metasequoia. I didn’t know about this side of Shiga,
so I’m glad we came today. It was a surprising, previously unknown side of the area. I’m glad I got to see this passion and this beautiful town
for the first time. It’s famous enough to be a setting for movies,
and it’s been preserved to this day. I found something new again! From the food to the scenery, it was wonderful! It was a great trip again this time. A success! Memories breathe in every part of the townscape. This unfamiliar scenery feels somehow nostalgic. I am simply glad that I could reflect on the past vibrancy and I am sincerely grateful to those who preserved this beauty.
