【人のいない穴場】神秘の社寺と、時が止まったようなノスタルジックな港町 |島根 | 出雲
Hello, this is Ikenoueno. Izumo is a land where the gods reside. Surrounding it, there are places where time still quietly passes. Untouristed, it’s a place where “real Japan” remains. Today, I’m traveling to Shimane’s hidden gems. My first stop is a hidden power spot deep in Izumo, revealed only through a cleft in the rocks. Hidden deep in the mountains of Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, is a shrine. It’s shrouded in a mystical atmosphere, as if time has stopped. The path to the shrine is rugged, a steep mountain path, and finally, you have to squeeze through a mere 40cm gap in the rocks to reach it. Surrounded by lush greenery and rocks, this hidden gem is rarely visited. I can see the entrance. I start the climb from here. I purify my hands in the river water. There’s a shrine that can only be reached through this point. The name “Kankama Shrine” comes from the word “kettle,” which was introduced from the distant Korean Peninsula. Legend has it that Susanoo-no-Mikoto brought reforestation techniques and ironworking culture from Silla to this region. The path to the shrine is approximately 300 steps. Huge boulders and boulders are everywhere. We reach a challenging rock formation. A narrow gap between the rocks. Turning sideways, we carefully make our way along the path. The silent path is the only sound we can hear: our own breathing. Traces carved into the rock face by the eons. It feels like we’re being tested by nature. Beyond that, a small shrine lies quietly. The rustling of the trees and the sound of the wind. This is another world. A view only visitors can see. A special sacred place. The temple is less than 10 minutes from Karakama Shrine. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the Niomon Gate at the entrance. Benkei also trained at this temple. The video is entertaining with introductory illustrations and natural beauty along the way. This video was taken in May, so the fresh greenery is beautiful. In autumn, the autumn foliage is also spectacular. Since it’s early in the morning, there are no people around yet. Go straight to the main hall. Turn left to Furou Falls. The cool air leads you to Wan’enji Temple. This is a training ground for ascetics. Just walking through the dignified air makes you stand tall. Trees have watched over history. With each step, it feels like a journey back in time. In autumn, the temple grounds turn crimson red. Its beauty is like a painting. The sound of leaves dancing in the wind deepens the tranquility of this temple. A 10-minute walk from the Niomon Gate, you’ll find a sacred waterfall. From the approach, follow the path along the stream to the waterfall. The Sanno Shichibutsu Hall has an unusual design, with a cross-like pattern. This is Furou Falls. It’s a 15-meter-high waterfall with a cave behind it and Zao Hall at the back of the waterfall. The surrounding area is filled with mystical silence and negative ions. From Wan’enji Temple, head west toward the Sea of Japan. Inome Cave is said to be the entrance to Yomi no Kuni (the other world). Burial and lifestyle artifacts from the Jomon to Kofun periods have been discovered here. Beyond the darkness, a tranquil sea unfolds. The view framed by the cave’s edge feels like a door to another world. Here, a stillness reminiscent of a “boundary” in a storybook is present. A space resonates with only the sound of gentle waves. A five-minute drive west leads to a quiet port town. A five-minute drive west leads to a quiet port town . A tunnel hand-dug by locals in 1935. Beyond the tunnel lies the townscape of Sagiura. Sagiura flourished as a port of call for Kitamae ships from the Edo to Meiji periods. Houses line the inlet, and the town still boasts a nostalgic view of rooftops lined with red Sekishu tiles. The time spent waiting for the wind passes leisurely. A wonderful time seems to stand still. Visit the historic Inasehagi Shrine. This shrine is the center of faith in the region and has watched over the safety of fishing and voyages since ancient times. Sagiura is not yet a tourist destination, but it is a port town where you can spend time quietly and peacefully.
