Walking in Yokaichi, Shiga: The Town Revived by “Shiga Denim”

I’m on a journey heading toward Osaka, passing through various towns before eventually returning to Tokyo.

This time, I took a short detour west from Mie Prefecture to visit Shiga Prefecture, stopping at Yokaichi.
Near Yokaichi Station, I walked through the covered shopping arcade, now famous as the home of Shiga Denim. The arcade has a warm, creative atmosphere, with several unique and stylish shops that reflect the town’s revitalization efforts. Colorful flags reading “Welcome to the Denim Sanctuary” hang above the walkway, showing just how much denim culture has become part of the city’s identity.

Historically, this area prospered as a key transportation hub. Around the shopping arcade once stood Enmeishinchi, one of the leading red-light districts in the prefecture, and even today, you can still feel traces of that history in the quiet streets.
