古い町並み散歩#12|萩城下町|江戸時代からの町並み|山口県萩市|令和の時代に残る懐かしき風景

Thank you for watching. This is manpuku from Occhii-ch. For this walk through the old townscape, we’ll be exploring Hagi Castle Town in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Let’s get started! Hagi Castle Town, where the Edo Period Streetscape Remains: The castle town, which extends beyond the outer moat of the former Hagi Castle, is laid out in a grid pattern, dotted with merchant houses, mid-level samurai residences, and doctors’ homes. Kikuya Yokocho: The streets remain unchanged today, retaining a vestige of their past. The beautiful streets, with their white walls, namako walls, and black board fences, continue, dotted with sites associated with Meiji Restoration patriots. (Quoted from the official website of the Hagi City Tourism Association) Takasugi Shinsaku’s Birthplace: Let ‘s enter the birthplace of Takasugi Shinsaku, a hero of the late Edo period who was described by Ito Hirobumi as “like thunder when he moves, like wind and rain when he strikes.” Kikuya Yokocho Shinsaku Square Takasugi Shinsaku Statue of Ambition : Edoya Yokocho , a charming alleyway with a black-board fence made from burnt cedar, is said to represent the youthful and dignified face of Takasugi Shinsaku at the age of 20, when he attended Meirinkan and Shokasonjuku . Konpira Shrine: Enseiji Temple, a Shingon Omuro sect temple where Ito Hirobumi learned to read and write and where Takasugi Shinsaku played as a child. The former home of Kido Takayoshi, one of the three great figures of the Meiji Restoration, was also included. After this, we toured Hagi Castle Town. Next, we plan to visit the main shrine of Hagi, associated with the Mori clan; the formidable southern passageway connecting the castle town and the moat, spanning the outer moat in front of the Heian Kosomon Gate; and the Kagitegata Road, a vestige of the Edo period. Kasuga Shrine : Kasuga Shrine is a shrine located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture . It was founded in 807 by the provincial governor, who divided the spirit of Kasuga Taisha from the Kasuga Taisha Shrine. In 1604, when Mori Terumoto entered Hagi Castle, the spirit of Mori Motonari (Gotoku Shrine) was enshrined within the castle grounds. In 1607, it was moved to its current location and made the main shrine of Hagi. The spirit of Mori Motonari (Gotoku Shrine) later became Toyosaka Shrine and the Mori family’s ancestral shrine. (Quoted from the Shrine Tour Japan website) Heian Bridge: A southern passageway spanning the outer moat in front of the Heianko Main Gate, connecting the fortified castle town with the moat. Heian Bridge is the only bridge still standing. It is depicted as a wooden bridge on a map of Hagi Castle Town from 1652. Since both stone bridges over the Shinbori River were constructed during the Meiwa era (1764-1771), it is believed to have been rebuilt with stone around the same time. Horiuchi Kaimagari Kaimagari is a street unique to castle towns, surrounded on both sides by high earthen walls and bent at right angles (kagi no te), making it a unique road with no clear view that at first glance appears to be a dead end. The Oimawashi-suji Kaimagari, along with the Kaimagari in the Heianko district and Okodama Yokocho, retain the appearance of a street unique to castle towns. (Quoted from the official website of the Hagi City Tourism Association) Today, I walked around Hagi Castle Town. What did you think? I’d be happy if you could leave a comment with your impressions. That’s all for today. Please come and watch the next video.
