旅の星Ⅱ「猿楽伝統と特産のまち 大淀町」 桧垣本八幡神社、世尊寺、他◇歴史街道#70◇Oyodo, Nara, Japan

Ōyodo Town: Gateway to the Yoshino District,
Nara Prefecture Higaimoto Hachiman-jinja Shrine Nōgaku, one of Japan’s traditional performing arts,
was once called Sarugaku. Ōyodo is known for the Higaimoto Sarugaku Theater,
which has existed since the Muromachi period.
The local shrine has long protected this tradition. The town continues to develop various projects to keep
the Sarugaku tradition alive and pass it on
to future generations. Ōyodo was once home to an exceptional fue (flute)
performer named Higaimoto Hikobei. We honor his legacy by offering Nōgaku lessons.
Visitors experience the art firsthand — through movement,
instruments, and unique vocal chanting. With a history spanning over 700 years,
Nōgaku is the oldest performing art in the world. Many people, even adults, don’t know this fact.
Seeing children chant, play and feel the living spirit of
this tradition is a delight. Roadside Station Yoshinoji Oyodo i Center Built with local cedar and hinoki cypress,
the center has a warm, soothing atmosphere. This popular farmers’ market offers fresh vegetables,
fruits and flowers harvested each morning. Local delights include sun-dried bancha tea,
konjac made with Yoshino kudzu arrowroot,
and handcrafted works by local artisans. The restaurant is a perfect spot to unwind
during a long drive and enjoy meals made
with fresh local ingredients. The information center introduces Yoshino’s history,
culture and highlights. It also provides a cozy space
to sit and eat. Hakusuien Orchard, Ōada Kōgen Various Japanese pears are sold here,
including the famed 20th Century Pear. During harvest season, visitors can enjoy pear picking
— one of Ōyodo’s local delights. Seson-ji Temple Said to have been founded by Prince Shōtoku,
it was once known as Yoshino Temple. The seated Amida Nyorai carries a gentle expression
reminiscent of the Asuka Buddha. The standing Eleven-headed Kannon,
designated by Nara prefecture
as a Tangible Cultural Property, is truly breathtaking. Seson-ji Temple’s Taishido Hall is also designated
by Nara prefecture as a Tangible Cultural Property. This statue of the young Prince Shōtoku praying
for his father’s recovery is believed to date back
to the Kamakura or Muromachi period,
echoing the quiet spirit of the age. A journey through tradition and local delights
in Ōyodo town, illuminated by
the region’s enduring light.
