Affordable Off-Season International Travel Series In this episode, we’ve come to Japan, to Saga and Nagasaki in West Kyushu. Because it’s off-season, the airline offered a 5-day, 4-night round trip clearance ticket for only 3,999. Luggage and meals included. So we made a last-minute decision to go. With almost no prior planning, we embarked on this trip. In this episode, we’ll take you to Takeo in Saga, a classic spot, as well as the lesser-known Tara. Along the way, we’ll pass through a charming small-town historic post town, enjoy some free sake, and visit a seaside oyster hut to grill seafood while enjoying the sea view. Although Japanese statistics claim Saga is the most boring prefecture, follow this episode and you’ll find that Saga isn’t boring at all! This is Hizen Hamashuku in Kashima City. It’s said to be one of Japan’s six great post towns. We’ve actually visited many Japanese post towns before, like Nakasendo, Narai-juku, and Mikuni streets. This time, we came to this area and thought we might as well add it to our collection. Let me explain what a post town is. For those who’ve watched our previous videos, you might already know, but for new viewers, this might be unfamiliar. A post town is, if you wanted to travel from one city to another in the past, transportation was difficult, and people could only walk. So, in the middle, you needed a place to stay. A post town was like that – a collection of accommodations. Like a Dragon Gate Inn gathering point. You know, these post towns always have ditches next to them, and they’re super clean. I don’t know why they’re so good. Actually, when I saw the ditch, I knew you’d give it some attention. Definitely, because it’s really such a big contrast. It’s not a contrast, it’s just room for Taiwan to improve! Look at the water quality. Taiwanese people love visiting old streets. We’d never miss them in Japan. But here, the surrounding shops aren’t really the focus. Instead, it’s the entire street’s Edo-era charm. Taking photos here will definitely make you happy. Yes. But coming here, the surrounding shops are not the main point. It’s rather the Edo atmosphere of the whole street. Taking photos here will definitely make you happy. Kashima City is known as a brewing town. We can see many important sake breweries concentrated in Hizen Hamashuku. So when we walk down the street, we can see many shops selling sake. Among them, Nabeshima sake is famous. So if you come here, you can try to find this sake and buy a souvenir to take home. There it is! This is the Nabeshima we mentioned. Besides selling sake, they also offer accommodation and coffee services. Look at the thatched roof, doesn’t it look like Shirakawa-go? It does. Quite similar. Yeah. This shop is called Hizen-ya, but they don’t sell eel rice. What’s great about this shop is that you can taste five types of sake for free. I was just attracted by a small sign with a promotion. I’m not that interested in sake, but when I saw umeshu, I wanted to buy it. This must be a gummy candy. This should be candy. Yes. I’m here to drink sake. There’s free tasting and paid tasting. The paid tasting seems to have higher-quality sake, so you need to pay a small coin amount to try a cup. Let’s try the free one. Auntie already had a drink. She’s already had some. I actually don’t really understand. I’ll just pick randomly. Use your foot, use your foot. Oh, cool. I used my foot. Auntie likes to drink. Auntie said the sake was good. Auntie likes to drink. Auntie said the sake was delicious. I just drank this sweet potato shochu. It’s also quite good. Actually, I prefer this one to sake. Free stuff is always the best, right? Last time in Niigata, we were so happy just paying to drink. This time, it’s completely free. This is called a “kanko kenkaku” (observation tour), which is basically a tourist factory. It simulates the sake brewing process. Actually, inside is a ball pit, which is quite fun. Kids should really like it. You’re going to soak in it? Be a hot pot noodle? This is actually a bathtub! How cool! It looks like a hot pot. Wow, these limited edition items are amazing. Besides sake, they also sell many sake-related products here. I bought a special one: a cake soaked in sake. Yes. Wow, these limited editions are so great. Yes. Besides sake, they also sell many sake-related products here. I bought a special one: a cake soaked in sake. How come there are such big carp in there? And they’re so big and just staying still. They’re all just standing still! This is one of the old houses in Hizen Hamashuku. It’s actually been converted into a tourist center, so you can go in and visit. All along the way, we’ve seen many small shops and coffee shops, which I think are quite charming. It’s actually these small, local attractions that we prefer over the more famous ones. Yes. This is one of the old houses in Hizen Hamashuku. It’s been converted into a tourist center, so you can come in and visit. Along the way, we’ve seen many small shops and coffee shops, which I think are quite charming. Actually, these small, local attractions are more to our liking than the many famous ones. We’re now at Yutoku Inari Shrine. As soon as you enter, there are shops and stalls on both sides. We’ve already started eating here, and we’re having a blast. It’s so cute. This is a cute fish, isn’t it? You saw Chikuwa. Yeah, how cool. It’s Chikuwa! Yeah, how cool! Actually, people call it “Chikuwa” in Japanese. I didn’t get to eat freshly grilled Chikuwa in Keelung, but I’m eating it here! Actually, in Japanese, it’s called “chikuwa”. Then it was brought to Taiwan, and I don’t know why it became “Jigu La” in transliteration. So, chikuwa and Jigu La are the same thing. Let’s try the authentic one. Yes. Try the authentic one. It’s thick and springy, and its skin, after being grilled, has a unique texture and is very fragrant. Mmm. We are now at Yutoku Inari Shrine, one of the three great Inari shrines. Since we’ve been to Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine before, which I believe many of you have also visited. Now we’re kind of collecting landmarks, trying to gather all three great ones. And coming here, I feel like everything is filled with vermilion colors, which is very pleasing to the eye. It reminds me of an anime setting. Yes. People come to Yutoku Inari Shrine mainly to pray for financial luck. I think it’s especially suitable for us, because if you’re a business person or someone who started their own business, this is a great place to come. It’s said that you can pray for this “magical financial luck.” How effective is it to be called “magical financial luck”? That’s right. It’s said that it can bring you magical financial luck. How effective is it to be called magical? It seems that having magical financial luck requires a bit of physical strength and endurance. It’s really high. Yeah. I just prayed for an endless stream of projects this year, endless wealth, and endless inspiration. Let’s be materialistic this year! It seems that having magical financial luck requires a bit of physical strength and endurance. It’s really high. It’s high. Yes. I was looking at the omamori downstairs for a long time, but I didn’t feel like buying any. Then I came up here and saw the omamori upstairs are cuter and prettier! Isn’t this small fortune charm super cute? Yes. Super cute. When you come here, don’t forget to take photos at the Senbon Torii. This is one of the distinct features of Inari Shrines! This Senbon Torii custom is said to have become particularly popular during a certain period as a way to fulfill vows or to pray. So, you can see that the more torii gates there are, the more efficacious the shrine is considered to be. The colors of these torii gates, from the top down, become more vibrant. The ones at the top are probably from senior alumni who fulfilled their vows, and the ones below are from juniors gradually building them. One day, the one at the bottom of the mountain should be… Wow. Super effective. People who come to pray for financial luck must not be lazy. If you’ve already prayed downstairs, you must walk up and pray at the top too. Look, from here you can also see far and wide. This means your career can also reach new heights. You can also reach new heights. Climb to higher levels. Yes. Yes. For those who don’t want to put in the effort, you can also pay money and take the elevator up. They even call it “Luck Ascending,” which makes you feel like you have to take it. It’s amazing. So amazing. Tonight we were supposed to stay at a hot spring hotel in Unzen, but on the way, an accident happened. The road was blocked, and we couldn’t get in. So we found this hotel last minute. What’s its name? Hotel Flag. It’s awesome because, maybe it was a last-minute deal, we booked it at the last minute. This double room for one night was only 11,000 Japanese Yen. 11,500. The size of an executive suite. Yes. Wow, the entrance is huge too. So comfortable. The bed is 140cm,
350
09:42:708 –> 09:43:916
it’s really big. And the bathroom is all behind, and it’s dry and wet separated. Here’s the toilet, and then, look, it’s connected to the shower, and inside is the bathroom with a bathtub! Wow! Let me show you. Look, wow! Dry and wet separated. The sink area, which doubles as a changing area, is also very spacious. One person can shower, and another can take a bath, it’s fine. It’s okay. Yes. So, four adults and two children are traveling. The size of this room could actually accommodate us, two adults and two children. But because of the room price calculation issue, the children were already counted as adults. So, we technically booked two rooms, plus my mom’s room, making it a total of three rooms. And it ended up being cheaper than two rooms. Alright, we’re really in a mess today, so that’s it for now. But I highly recommend this hotel. I’ll briefly explain why we’re in a mess today. When we were about 7 kilometers from Unzen, the only road to Unzen was suddenly blocked. So, we spent about an hour driving around the mountain. After that, we decided to give up and go back down to find a place to stay. The hotel lobby is very comfortable. They offer a complimentary mini-bar 24 hours a day. Plus, there are two happy hour periods with free drinks. And I think the hot spring is quite impressive too. We’re going to soak soon, but I can’t film it for you. Alright, that’s it for now. Wow, the windows are huge too. Yes. The hotel lobby is very comfortable. They offer a complimentary mini-bar 24 hours a day. Plus, there are two happy hour periods with free drinks. And I think the hot spring is quite impressive too. We’re going to soak soon, but I can’t film it for you. Okay, that’s it for now. Alright, that’s it for now. Wow, the windows are huge too. Yes. Yes. This is Oouo Jinja Shrine and the Sea Torii. It has an interesting story. Legend has it that long ago, there was a corrupt official who was imprisoned on a small island. Whenever the tide rose, the island would become cut off from the outside world. So every day, he would pray to Oouo (the big fish), begging for a way to escape. One day, after he was finally released, to thank Oouo for saving him, he built this sea torii gate and shrine. Yes. This place is located in Tara-cho, Saga Prefecture. It’s said that the maximum tidal range here can reach up to six meters. So it’s also known as the town where the moon’s gravity is most visible. It’s high tide now. If it were low tide, you could walk all the way from here to there. It will be low tide by 3 PM. It’s high tide now. If it’s low tide, you can walk all the way from here to there. The tide will be out at 3 PM. Yes. Underfoot are all oyster shells. They make a nice sound when you step on them. Yes. You can already see the tide receding from the side. The path is starting to emerge! Do you want to walk on it? No, I’ll get wet now. These are all oyster shells and also scallop shells. I wonder if there will be a Japanese wife telling her husband not to kneel on the abacus, but to kneel here. And look, there are so many rock oysters here now, but no one wants to pick even one. No one has the motivation to pick them. There’s a car. It must be waiting for the tide to recede to drive in and harvest oysters. Those poles we see in the distance must be where they raise oysters. Let’s look at the end there. You can experience what it’s like when Moses parted the Red Sea. And I keep thinking it’s going to flood, but the tide is actually receding. I saw a video before of cars driving across like this, it was so cool. It’s really interesting! I really want to drive the car across later. Let’s just drive the car across. No, it’s too dangerous. Yeah. It’s receding now. I saw a video before, cars can drive across like that, it’s really cool. It’s very interesting. Yes. I really want to drive the car across later. No, it’s too dangerous. It’s too dangerous. Yes. The barbecue stall next to us is called Kaidomaru. There are actually many barbecue stalls like this along the coast. They sell raw ingredients, and you can grill them yourself. This place is right next to the sea torii gate, and it’s part of the same complex. This shop has good reviews, so we picked it for convenience and proximity. Today we chose to sit outside because it’s very smoky inside. The style of this place is actually called an “oyster hut.” Many people go to Itoshima to eat, but the birthplace of oyster huts is actually this area. When you come here, you must eat oysters and Takezaki crab. Everything here is clearly priced, so you can consume with peace of mind. Yes. Yes. The birthplace of oyster huts is actually this place. When you come here, you must eat oysters and Takezaki crab. And everything is clearly priced, so you can consume with peace of mind. Yes. It’s very reassuring to pay for. Besides grilling, they also have ready-made items you can order. Look, they have many set meals here. We’ll order a crab kamameshi (rice pot) and try it out. Yes. The grilling has started here. Wow. Wow, it’s crackling! I have superpowers! Do you see smoke? Yes. This scene is too tempting. It’s already flavorful enough. With a little soy sauce, wow, it’s just so delicious. It’s already very flavorful. Yes. This is abalone sashimi. Too tempting. Quick, let’s eat. Let’s give it a try. I think you should compare it to what we ate in Jeju Island. Yeah, is it different? This is better. Because it’s been handled more meticulously. In Jeju Island, they just rinse it with water, so the salty taste of the seawater is too strong. This one is still fresher. Seawater can be very salty and turn bitter. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yeah. Abalone sashimi. If you put the abalone sashimi on a scallop shell and grill it slightly, the texture is even better and more delicious. Yes. This snail sashimi must also be super delicious. Scallop sashimi. It’s very crispy! So delicious! Yes. I still prefer grilled food. Add some soy sauce, that’s better. This soy sauce is delicious! Try this. Is it better than Hokkaido? I think it’d be hard. Hokkaido’s. It’s about a quarter of the price. Yeah. Looks very hot. Oh. Let’s see. Compared to Hokkaido, I think the ingredients are very fresh. But when we ate in Hokkaido, it was a rest stop that sold seafood and offered grilling services. But this is a restaurant, so I think their food preparation is more meticulous. Yes. This is Takezaki crab. It’s already cooked for us. You can choose to grill it yourself or have them prepare it for you. It looks really good prepared by them. Steamed is definitely the most delicious way to eat it. It’s blue before it’s cooked, so people call it “blue crab.” Oh. So fun! It’s still moving! Oh. Wow. Oh, oh, oh. It’s still moving! This is crab kamameshi (rice pot). It smells so good! All the shells and crab are cooked into it. Let’s mix it. It smells so good. Mix it. It smells so good! One serving is quite a lot, because the pot is quite deep. This dish was about 1,700 or 1,500. Not bad. If you want to order kamameshi, you have to decide at the beginning because it takes half an hour to prepare. Yes. We came out after eating, and it’s completely low tide now. You can walk across. So cool! You can see so far. Let’s see. It’s really going to drive across! A car is already parked there. It takes just over an hour for the tide to recede. So it really feels like the tidal range here is big. It truly is the place most affected by the moon’s gravity. It truly is the place most affected by the moon’s gravity. This is Takeo Onsen. This place developed very early. It’s said to have a history of 1,300 years. And famous figures like Date Masamune and Miyamoto Musashi have all visited this place. Yes. Hot springs are everywhere here. And you have many types of rooms and sizes to choose from. Each of these is a different establishment. Yes. Yes. The main reason to visit this place is to see this Romon (tower gate). This Romon was designed by the same person who designed Tokyo Station, Tatsuno Kingo. And now, over there, we see the old building of Takeo Onsen. Next to it is a new building, also built by Tatsuno Kingo. (joking) Do you know a person named Chenye Xiao He? That person is Xiao He. (cold joke) If you want to take a hot spring bath, you should go to the old building. The new building is now more like the Beitou Hot Spring Museum. It also has a history of about 110 years. Let’s continue our visit. Let’s secretly look at the men’s bath. This is probably my only chance in this lifetime. You seem a bit too excited. This is the men’s bath. Wow, this bath is made of marble. I think the whole interior here is very similar to Takino-yu in Beitou, a century-old hot spring. It really is. Yes. Takino-yu. The one in Beitou. Yes. Yes. The bathroom we just saw was called “Go-Sen Yu” (Five-Sen Bath). This one is called “Ju-Sen Yu” (Ten-Sen Bath). Their roofs all have an octagonal ceiling. And it’s said that the ceramic tiles at the bottom of this pool were very precious at the time. This document is a kind of hot spring official letter issued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It states that hot spring bathers should not trouble the locals, and each person must pay five mon (an old Japanese currency unit) to take a bath. Also, even though a lot of firewood is needed, you must not cut down trees near residential areas. As expected of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, his words carry a lot of weight. Yes. This is like a private bathhouse concept. I didn’t expect it to exist so long ago. And the guide mentioned that the bathing fee was twenty mon. So the “Go-Sen Yu” and “Ju-Sen Yu” probably referred to the fee you had to pay. Yes. Yes. Like when we visited the Beitou Hot Spring Museum, there were also large tatami rooms like this. It’s actually for you to rest in this space after your hot spring bath. I’m telling you, many hot springs in Japan offer such facilities when you pay to enter. Yes. We have many male viewers on our channel, aren’t you going to show them the women’s bath? I’m telling you, they see plenty of that on TV normally. Yes. No. Yes. Yes. No. My mom and they were wandering around nearby and bought a tofu snack. Let’s try it. The kid’s already eating it. He’s eating happily. Is it good, kiddo? Try it. It’s cool, it has a mochi-like texture. Is it similar to the one in Okinawa? A bit, yes. More mochi-like. I think the texture is the same, but the flavor is different. Yes. This is Takeo City Library. It’s very beautiful inside, with a lot of wooden elements. On the first floor, they’ve collaborated with Tsutaya Books, and there’s also a Starbucks. You can have coffee and relax here, enjoying the leisurely atmosphere. The main thing is that many travel websites in Taiwan have this information, telling you that this is a must-visit spot in Saga. So we met many Taiwanese tourists here. Inside the bookstore, there are restricted photography areas. So you can’t film in many places. But we’re standing here, and we’ll briefly tell you about it. Looking down from the second floor, it’s quiet yet lively below. There are quite a few people. Standing here, we feel like we’re detached from the hustle and bustle. Although the books here are all in Japanese, do people really come to bookstores just to read books? Or are they looking at all sorts of trinkets? Like me, I just came to take pictures. I can only take pictures in this current area. Yes. Yes. No. I can only film in this area. Yes. Yes. Usually, in libraries, the children’s reading areas are just sections. But here, it’s a separate space. It’s a completely different building. I think this is great because it allows parents and children to truly relax. Even if kids run around in this library, it’s totally fine. And it’s less likely to disturb those who aren’t with families. Yes. Yes. This is Takeo Shrine. It has over 1,200 years of history. That’s amazing. Our temples there are only a hundred years old and already considered historic. This place has over 1,200 years! People mainly come here to pray for success in martial arts, and then a final bow. It’s so complicated. It feels like you’ve actually gone through it all. Your expression seemed pretty awkward. You actually did it. I’ll show it to you in fast-forward. You made a mistake. Okay, the last movement. Now you have to clap twice. I said it wrong just now. Okay, that’s enough. Go on to the next part. No, that’s it. Oh. There’s a list of unlucky years here. It looks like they also have the concept of offending Tai Sui. Yeah. You pretty much buy an omamori everywhere you go. I’m telling you, once you start buying these, you’ll just keep doing it. This one I bought for my sister. She loves Rilakkuma, so I collected a pair for her. And this one, I’m telling you, this is a fortune charm. It’s made very beautifully. This omamori is also very special. It’s called a Sakura Omamori, but I actually don’t know what its purpose is. I know what makes it special. It’s especially beautiful. Yes. Since this is a place to pray for martial arts success, there’s a special archery range set up here. This should be a ritual to ward off bad luck, right? Yes. We previously summarized a common feature of shrines: they all have extremely tall trees. This place has that characteristic. Towering trees. Another major highlight of Takeo Shrine is this 3,000-year-old camphor tree. Wow, 3,000 years is just a number to us, but for the tree, it’s a truly long and difficult period. Think about it, it’s only 2025 now, so it already existed before Christ! Yes. I saw the Japanese people praying like this: hands high up in the air, then bringing them down. It’s like they’re absorbing the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. This is actually right next to Takeo Library. You can park your car at Takeo Library and walk up here. You should definitely visit both. Alright, this episode ends here. In the next episode, I’ll show you an incredibly affordable hot spring hotel. One night, two meals, all-you-can-eat seafood buffet for less than 4,000 NT dollars a night! After watching it, I guarantee you’ll only want to travel abroad! Please subscribe, share, and like! See you in the next episode! See you in the next episode. Welcome everyone to subscribe, share, and highly recommend! See you in the next episode. See you in the next episode. Yes.
