【幻想的絶景の高千穂峡】太古に阿蘇の自然が造り出した造形美を巡る|宮崎県西臼杵郡高千穂町
Takachiho Gorge: A Miracle Land Born of Nature A waterfall cascading through a fantastical gorge Animals playing freely in nature Exploring Takachiho Gorge: A Scenic Beauty Beyond Compare Hello everyone. This is Japan’s Rare Heritage Tour. Today, I’m taking you on a journey through Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture. Takachiho is said to be a place where gods descended since ancient times, and Takachiho Gorge lies at its heart. This nationally designated natural monument and scenic spot features cliffs nearly 100 meters high, stretching for approximately 7 kilometers. The gorge was formed by lava from an ancient eruption of Mount Aso, which cooled and was carved over time. In addition to the spectacular Manai Falls, you’ll also see the animals that live in Takachiho Gorge, so please enjoy. I’m currently on my way to Takachiho Gorge in my rental car. I’ll arrive at the Takachiho Gorge parking lot in about three minutes. The weather is just right, not too hot, so I expect to be able to leisurely explore Takachiho Gorge. The parking lot is in sight. I accidentally missed it. Sorry. There were no cars coming from behind, so I’ll turn back a little. If you continue down this road, you’ll arrive at Takachiho Gorge Parking Lot No. 4. It’s a bit far, but it might be a good option if you’re planning a leisurely stroll around the Takachiho Gorge area. I chose this parking lot because I wanted to see something along the way. This is Takachiho Gorge Parking Lot No. 4. It was Sunday, and there were hardly any cars parked there. I decided to park here and head toward Takachiho Gorge. I’ve come up the same road as before. Now, I’ll walk toward Takachiho Gorge, taking in the surrounding scenery. It says it’s about a 25-minute walk to the Manai Falls area in Takachiho Gorge. I’ll take my time. Actually, I came this route to see this stone bridge. This arched concrete bridge is the Shinto Takachiho Ohashi Bridge. It was built in 2003. It spans the Gokase River and is one of the three Takachiho bridges. The bridge is about 300 meters long and stands 115 meters above the water. We arrived at the entrance to the stairs leading to Takachiho Gorge. To reach Takachiho Gorge, we descended these long stairs. We still had a long way to go. This is Takachiho Gorge No. 2 Parking Lot. We’re almost at Takachiho Gorge. We’ve safely reached Takachiho Gorge. This is called “Shinbashi” (New Bridge), and it’s one of the Takachiho Bridges. It was built shortly after the war. We ‘re already beginning to get a glimpse of the natural wonders of Takachiho Gorge. Now, let’s continue our journey through Takachiho Gorge toward Manai Falls. Looking back, we could see the Takachiho Ohashi Bridge, one of the Takachiho Bridges. This steel arch bridge was built in 1955. Now we’ve seen all three of the Takachiho Bridges. A magnificent canyon landscape unfolded before us. The river flowing here is the Gokase River, a first-class river that flows from Nobeoka City into the Hyuga-Nada Sea. This is the view from the opposite side of the Gokase River. There’s another waterfall spot we highly recommend seeing further ahead. This is another recommended waterfall spot. This is Sennin Byobu Rock, a massive 70 meters high. The lava flowing from the eruption of Mount Aso was cooled by the Gokase River and carved over tens of thousands of years, creating the unique shape of this region. The large rock you see ahead is Onihachi’s Power Stone. It weighs approximately 200 tons. Legend has it that Emperor Jimmu’s older brother, Mikenu no Mikoto, defeated the evil Onihachi and ruled the region. It’s said that Mikenu no Mikoto threw this “Onihachi’s Power Stone” to show off his strength. This is a heart-shaped stone. It’s said that three more heart-shaped stones are hidden in Takachiho Gorge. Finally, we’ve reached Manai Falls, Takachiho Gorge’s most spectacular view. Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls: The Famous Waterfall The waterfall cascading from a height of 17 meters to the water’s surface is majestically beautiful. Boats ply the beautiful gorge with its columnar jointing. The famous explosion viewed from the opposite side is also magnificent. This is the upper section of Manai Falls. The water flowing into this area forms Manai Falls, captivating many visitors. This is a pond called Onokoro Pond. Within the pond is Onokoro Island, created by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. During the Takachiho Shrine Grand Festival, the portable shrine (omikoshi) is purified by circling the pond three times. This is Onokoro Island. The waters of this pond are incredibly clear, allowing you to see beneath the surface. In addition to carp and ducks, you can also see sturgeon, which seem to be the lords of the pond. You can feed the fish and ducks here, so I decided to give them a try. Finally, there’s one more hidden waterfall spot I’d like to introduce. It ‘s not very noticeable, located on the side of the road beyond Onokoro Pond, but you can still see the magnificent columnar jointed walls and waterfall. That’s all for today’s journey.
