Hello everyone! This is Naru! This time, in Gifu Prefecture, I’ve come to Hida Takayama in the Hida area! The Hida area is home to the World Heritage site Shirakawa-go, Gero Onsen, one of Japan’s three famous hot springs, and surrounded by the mountains of the Northern Alps, the Okuhida Onsen-go (hot spring village). It’s an area where abundant nature and traditional culture coexist. The center of the Hida area we’re visiting this time, Hida Takayama, is known as the “Little Kyoto” of Hida. It’s a castle town that strongly retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. In the historic preservation district, designated for its old townscape, you’ll find rows of machiya (traditional townhouses) with latticed doors and sake breweries. You can experience an atmosphere as if you’ve slipped back in time. The only surviving Edo-period magistrate’s office in all of Japan, the Takayama Jinya. Continuing since the Edo period, the Miyagawa Morning Market, one of Japan’s three largest. The setting for the spring Takayama Festival, the Hida Sannogu Hie Jinja Shrine. Additionally, along the Higashiyama Walking Course, which stretches for about 5.5 km, temples and shrines are scattered about. While walking the quiet cobblestone paths, you can experience the history and spiritual culture of Hida Takayama. This time, we’ll venture a little further from Takayama to Hida Furukawa. This place is also known as a pilgrimage site for the movie “Your Name.” The white-walled storehouses and the carp swimming along the Setogawa River create a charming townscape that has a different, quiet charm compared to Takayama. Our accommodation is a long-established ryokan with over 150 years of history, “Yatsusankan.” We’ll experience traditional Hida hospitality! Founded in 1141, it is lovingly called “Sanno-sama” by the locals. It is considered one of the models
for Miyamizu Shrine in the hit movie “Your Name.,” and many fans visit it as a pilgrimage site. We prayed at Hie Jinja Shrine early this morning! The autumn leaves are incredibly beautiful, aren’t they! This is amazing. It was a little foggy this morning, you know? Even now. It makes it so magical. True, it’s a feeling we haven’t had before. They say the maple leaves are “burning red,” right? Today is the first time I’ve thought, “Wow, that’s really true.” They really are bright red. I’ve never seen maple leaves this red before! It’s so wonderful, I’m really moved. I wonder if the leaves in town are also changing? I wonder? We can look forward to it. Well then, I’m heading to the morning market! I can see the Nakabashi Bridge! I wonder if cherry blossoms bloom here in spring? This area is called the “Furui Machinami” (Old Townscape)! The famous one! Is this the main tourist street? There are so many restaurants. The buildings are all dark, aren’t they? We haven’t seen black buildings often! Have we? I don’t remember! (laughs) I don’t remember either… (laughs) It’s lovely. They say this was a merchant town! So maybe that’s why so many people are running businesses here. We’ll come back when the shops start to open! We’ve arrived at the morning market! It’s so crowded. This morning market has been running since the Edo period. It used to be in a different location, but due to road development, it moved to the bank of the Miyagawa River. It’s been held in this current spot since 1960! A delicious lineup of Takayama specialties! They’re selling vegetables and fruits, too! They even have takoyaki (octopus balls)! There was a line for taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes)! How do you make this “Tsukemono Steak”? (Shopkeeper) It’s fine just like this. You don’t need to season it or anything. It’s already seasoned with salt. Put oil or butter in a frying pan, and fry this. Once it’s fried, here’s the trick! Flatten it out, and crack one raw egg over it. This part is important! Use chopsticks to spread just the top, don’t mix it all the way to the bottom. Eat it when the egg is soft-cooked! That’s Tsukemono Steak. That’s right, that’s right. What? You don’t actually put steak in it? There’s no meat. We call it “steak” because you fry it. I really thought Tsukemono Steak had meat in it! 🤣 Chatting with the local vendors is part of the market’s charm! It was a fun market just to walk through! We’ve come to the Nakabashi Bridge! We’ll cross Nakabashi Bridge to get to the Takayama Jinya! There was another morning market held in front of the Jinya. This market feels a bit more local. Hida was ruled by the Kanamori clan for 107 years, but the Edo Shogunate, eyeing its rich forest resources
and underground resources like gold, silver, and copper, made it “tenryo” (shogunate-controlled land) in 1692. This Takayama Jinya was established as the magistrate’s office (Daikansho)! For 176 years, 25 generations of “daikan” (magistrates) and “gundai” (deputies) worked from this location. It is the only surviving Edo-period Jinya in all of Japan. They say there are 150 of these “rabbit” nail covers! The Kitchen. I was surprised to see it even has a garden! Oshirasu: A place like a courtroom. Having to sit on these stones… that’s too scary. The storehouses are so big. And there are so many of them. It’s because this was land directly controlled by the shogunate. Rice from all over Hida all came here, apparently. They paid their rice tax to the shogunate, not to a feudal lord. Being “tenryo” land is what made this possible! Inside the Okura (storehouse), historical documents were on display! The materials were displayed clearly, making the tour enjoyable! The town started getting crowded around 10 AM. We’re back in the Old Townscape! You can enjoy sake tasting at the breweries♪ Many of the shops have cute signs! We can’t miss out on mitarashi dango (rice dumplings)! The toasty aroma fills the air! It’s soy sauce flavored! What do you mean? Aren’t “mitarashi” supposed to be sweet? It’s soy sauce! Oh, so mitarashi dango in Takayama are soy sauce flavored. What? Is that different? Well, usually they’re sweet. This isn’t sweet! It’s more savory. Wow, that’s interesting! It’s an addictive flavor! The charred bits are delicious! If you come to Hida, you have to eat this! Here it is. Premium Hida Beef. Isn’t this huge? It’s longer than my index finger. About the size of my palm? A little longer than my index finger! We just got in line because everyone else was. Seriously, there was such a line. It’s warm. I wonder if you eat it with the rice cracker? This Hida beef is amazing. It pairs perfectly with the vinegared rice. And it goes surprisingly well with this shrimp cracker. I’d never had beef on sushi before, but after eating this, I want to try more kinds. It’s delicious. Hida beef is so good. It melts in your mouth. It might be fun to compare the Hida beef from different shops! Moving a little away from the Old Townscape to “Higashiyama Teramachi.” The Higashiyama Walking Course, where temples and shrines are scattered over 5.5 km. This time, we’ll walk from Unryu-ji Temple to Tensho-ji Temple. Look at this! “Lately, only bad things have been happening…” Cause and Effect (Karma) That may be your own past actions coming back to you as retribution. That’s harsh. Harsh. A turning point in life. It may be a turning point towards better fortune. Confess before the Buddha, and let us receive light in our negative hearts. We should definitely do it! *Clap clap* *Clap clap*! The offering box! The Higashiyama Walking Course is uncrowded, so you can enjoy it quietly♪ It has the atmosphere of a castle town. Ah! A shishimai (lion dance) from the festival? I can see our destination, Tensho-ji Temple! Tensho-ji Temple is a famous spot for autumn leaves! This is the temple where Matsudaira Tadateru, Tokugawa Ieyasu’s biological son,
and Kato Mitsumasa, Kato Kiyomasa’s grandson, were entrusted. Isn’t this foliage incredible? The autumn leaves are stunningly beautiful. This is really something. When it’s sunny, it’s a bit different again, isn’t it? The morning view was nice, but seeing the autumn leaves under a blue sky is beautiful, too. The yellow of the ginkgo leaves is so beautiful. I never realized ginkgo trunks were this thick. The yellow is amazing. It’s glowing. It’s golden. Golden. The Higashiyama Walking Course is quiet and highly recommended! Heading to the ryokan where we’re staying! About 20 minutes by car from Hida Takayama, Yatsusankan stands in Hida Furukawa. It is a long-established “ryotei ryokan” (high-class inn with restaurant)
with over 160 years of history, founded in the late Edo period. The “Shogetsuro” wing, built in 1905, is designated as a
National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. The traditional architectural beauty, showcasing the techniques of Hida’s master craftsmen,
is stunning! We are staying in the “Hotei” room in the Shogetsuro wing! It has two Japanese-style rooms! The fine details in the room are also beautiful! Is this Hotei-sama (the “Laughing Buddha”)? There is a toilet and a sink, but no bath in the room. You can see Honko-ji Temple and the Araki River. The “miso senbei” (miso rice cracker)
welcome snack was delicious! 😻 This room is amazing, isn’t it? When we entered, it was lit only by candlelight. It was so magical. It seems this area is famous for candles. When you stay at an inn, it’s nice to learn about the local specialties. We made a new discovery today. The garden is beautiful, too. It feels like we’re eating while looking at the garden. The dishes are served one by one, which feels very special. It’s a persimmon, right? The dishware is cute, too. It really is a persimmon. Inside are scallops, covered in a persimmon sauce! Persimmon vinegar. It’s covered in persimmon vinegar! The scallops are so big, too. I can feel a hint of persimmon. But it’s not weird at all. It’s an unusual combination, but it works! Because the persimmon is sweet, the vinegar and sweetness… It’s delicious! “Ten-nen Momiji-yaki” (Natural Autumn Leaf Grill) The main course is Hida beef shabu-shabu! The shabu-shabu is ready. What is this beautiful color… The marbling on the meat is so beautiful. We’re so grateful to Hida beef. Hida beef has been amazing lately. Even though it’s shabu-shabu,
it feels quite thick. It’s different from supermarket meat. Well, obviously. It disappeared in an instant. This Hida beef is just so delicious. Why is Hida beef so delicious? What happened to you? I’ve become Hida beef! There it is. The Hida beef spread through me, and I became Hida beef. You became “Naru Beef.” Has “Naru Beef” been born? Hida Beef (Naru Beef)? I’ve become Hida beef! It’s truly delicious. I wonder why it’s so good. I want to go see a Hida beef ranch. I wonder if we can? I want to go to the source and give my thanks. Thank you, Hida beef! 🙏 This alone is pure happiness. You can taste happiness in just one slice, and we have this much! I almost want to savor just one piece. It’s just so good. Um, may I eat some too? I can’t just watch anymore. This is unbelievable. It really melts. It really does. It’s really melting. Wow. It’s seriously melting. Maybe we should go to that ranch. I want to. I want to go see it. Should we go say hi? Yes, I want to go express my gratitude! 🙏 “Thank you.” It’s really melting! How is it? Did you become Hida beef? I became Hida beef! What is it? It’s sweet, and… I don’t think I can describe it. “Hida beef” is the only way to say it. It’s just so delicious. We enjoyed the shabu-shabu to our hearts’ content! It’s beautiful this morning. The view outside is beautiful, too. The river is flowing. Doesn’t it look like a sea of clouds? Over by the mountains. Are you still talking about that? But that *is* a sea of clouds over there. Are you *still* talking about that? I think it’s just fog. You said, “Let’s go see the sea of clouds this morning,” and *I* was the only one who woke up early… I’ve already heard this like 50 times. It was definitely a sea of clouds. It had formed. That was just fog. I still wanted to go and not give up. We were supposed to see the sea of clouds from the Anbozan Observatory! If you say it one more time… I’m going to call you the “Unkai Woman” yokai. I’ll call you the “Unkai Woman” yokai.
(Sea of Clouds Spirit) Fine, whatever! I’ll keep saying it. If I don’t see a sea of clouds, I probably won’t be able to rest in peace! (laughs) I have to go somewhere. If I don’t see a sea of clouds, I’ll never be able to forget it. I woke up so early to see it. There *was* a sea of clouds. Let’s eat. It’s so luxurious for breakfast. They have Hoba Miso (miso grilled on a magnolia leaf). And fish, too. It’s nice to grill it yourself. Delicious. The miso soup. The dashi (broth) is so rich, it’s delicious. What should I… I guess the Hoba Miso. It has a lot of vegetables in it. Green onions. The charred bits are good. Yeah, the charred bits… I love Hoba Miso! The rice is “shinmai” (newly harvested rice), too! Hoba Miso is the best! The best! The vegetables are delicious, too! It’s a good morning. A good morning. The weather is so nice. I’m excited for what’s next. The sea of clouds… Sea of clouds. Still… The “Unkai Woman” yokai has appeared. I have to see one, or I won’t rest in peace! (laughs) If you have any recommendations
for sea of clouds spots, please let me know! 🙏 After checking out of the hotel, in Hida Furukawa, right here, we came to the city hall. You can use the parking lot for free, so we parked the car here. To the Setogawa River and
the Shirakabe Dozogai (White-Walled Storehouse Street) I want to go! It’s famous. I wonder if there are carp? There might be carp. Around here. So, heading this way, we’ll look around here today, go to Furukawa Station, and go to Keta Wakamiya Jinja Shrine. This town, you see, has many spots that were settings for “Your Name.”! Let’s go, keeping an eye out for those spots. Alright, let’s go. The Great Ginkgo Tree at the Fukuzen-ji Temple ruins, said to be ~700 years old. The river is nice, too! The water is so clear! There were no carp. I wanted to see the carp. It’s a shame they’re not here. It says they come back in the spring. So we can’t see them until then. It’s nice. It’s quiet and relaxing. A lovely town. The white walls are a key feature, too. That’s true. Yesterday was black, today is white. It’s a nice contrast! This is the least cautious bird I’ve ever seen! I find entrances like this so romantic. A retro cafe. Hida-Furukawa Station. Hida-Furukawa Station is the model for the station where the protagonist, Taki, visited while searching for Mitsuha in “Your Name.” It feels like the main character could step off the train at any second! I’m going to head to Keta Wakamiya Jinja Shrine. It was about a 17-minute walk from the station. The mountains are so beautiful. The weather is clear and you can see the autumn leaves. The leaves are changing color. It feels great today. It’s a clear autumn day, isn’t it? Yeah, it is! Is this the first time it’s been sunny for our autumn leaf viewing this year? You might be right! It’s finally sunny. Standing on a hilltop overlooking the Hida Furukawa town area, this is a shrine revered by locals as their guardian deity! It is also said to be one of the models
for Miyamizu Shrine in the movie “Your Name.” We’re back in the town of Hida Furukawa! This place, Ajidokoro Furukawa, apparently appeared in “Your Name.” There was a scene where they eat Goheimochi (grilled rice cakes), and this is the shop that looked like it. Shall we go in? I ordered the Hida Furukawa Ramen. It’s a soy sauce base, apparently. Looks delicious. Delicious. It’s so light! Are the noodles thin? Delicious! It’s so light! So good! This is really delicious. I wonder if it’s different from Takayama Ramen? I’ve never had Takayama Ramen, so I wouldn’t know… (laughs) Delicious! The chashu (pork) was big and delicious, too♪ This is the delicious one we ate at the ryokan! I bought the assortment pack! The shop is inside a renovated old folk house. My first canelé! It was delicious! Thanks for watching!

On my first trip to Japan in 2017, I visited Takayama and spent 2 nights there. This was my first ryokan experience and there was a onsen on the top floor of the ryokan, a private bath. I enjoyed it a lot, also the view over Takayama, as snow was falling outside.
However, for me Takayama was too touristy and like a museum village. I didnt feel any kind of feelings there, and I dont think that it has become better since then. So whilst I enjoy watching your video, I dont feel any need to return to Takayama.
