Day 3 of the trip. Found Hokkaido. Arrived in Hakodate. Slept soundly for 3 hours on the ferry. Waited 15 minutes, disembarkation begins. The weather is good. Arrived in Hokkaido. Hokkaido is hot. Today’s high is 30°C. First, fill up on gas. [Okamoto Self-Service Hakodate] Free tissue giveaway. Got the tissue. Gasoline 1L: 158 yen (US$1). Fuel efficiency is 16.6 km per liter. Bad fuel economy. After shopping, headed to a hidden gem in Hakodate. ［ Hasegawa Store・Yakitori Bento ］. Driving in Hakodate is tricky. Is it okay to cross the tram tracks on the right? [Super Ion] Arrival. Eat a little. Seasonal limited item: ‘Triple’. All three have different flavors. Salt, miso, sauce. The pleasant aroma of charcoal. Delicious. I want local ingredients. Got ice. Steamed beans. Croquette: 150 yen (US$1). Almost like a minced meat cutlet. It was a thriving shop. Moved 15 minutes east from Hakodate. Lovely countryside. Hardly any horses. I was reading a Hokkaido magazine, and found an article saying “There are wild horses in Hakodate.” I thought I wanted to go there, but… This is definitely not the place. Arrived at [Tochinokishirakisan Shrine]. We’ll go after eating croquettes. It’s incredibly quiet and peaceful here. Somehow… It feels like a place where bears might be around. A small stream is flowing. A nice little stream. I want to live in an old house by the stream. Encountered foreign tourists. Eavesdropping. The suspicious person returns to the car. There are no bears here. The bear might be on the east side of the mountain. After checking the trees, I’ll go to Bear Mountain. Not Bear Mountain, Horse Mountain. The story is over. 800 years old. The horse chestnut is too big. I learned that by eavesdropping earlier. The first root. The second root. They used to be separate trees. Two trees merged. No visible joint. Seems to be a rare phenomenon. It’s hollow inside. Squirrel spotted. Squirrels have scary faces. No horses, but a good spot. Alright, heading to the horses. A view that feels like Hokkaido. Another detour. The spot with the shortest distance between Hokkaido and Honshu. The wind is strong. The shortest distance between Hokkaido and Honshu. Shiobiki to Oma: 17.5 km. You can see Honshu right there. 2:24 PM. Going to see the horses. Seems like a pretty rough road. There are no signs, and it’s quite hard to find. Is it passable? It’s a very narrow road. No way. This sucks. Gotta back up. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. Damn it. Rebooting mind. The ocean is beautiful. Where’s the horse? Strategy meeting. Let’s check the horse’s location again. Confirmed to be at ‘Shio Kubi Yama’. Sign reads [Beware of Horses]. It should be around here. This is the entrance to [Shio Kubi Yama]. There seems to be a parking lot ahead. A place not on the map. Parking lot found. Arrived. Nothing shows up on the map. Departure. Water. I have a bad feeling about this. Visibility is poor, so I’m scared of bears. I’ll make noise to scare off bears. The ocean is beautiful. That startled me. It’s a bird. I stepped weirdly. There’s a conspicuous sign. [Brown Bear Sightings]. April 17th. Apparently none have been seen recently. [This is brown bear habitat]. [Mountain climbing prohibited]. ［Beware of horses］. Horses and bears are ahead. You can enter from that way. If you go ahead, you can film the horse. But… There might be bears. The stakes are too high. The ocean is beautiful. No bears have come. I’ll let you off the hook for today. Search for [Shio Kubi Yama + Horse] to see some wonderful photos. I’m scared to go beyond that gate. Too bad I can’t see it. Picked up dinner and drinks at Seicomart. Seicomart gives you plastic bags. I’m really happy about that. Heading to tonight’s lodging. Arrived. The Japan Coast Guard is next door. Seems like a safe area. It’s a very beautiful park, feels great. I hear a sound. An airplane. Airplanes take a break after 8 PM. It’ll probably be quiet when we sleep at night. Watering my partner. Blindfolded with a bath towel. Push it into the groove of the sun visor. Done. Light blocking is almost 100%. The sunshade for the other windows is above the driver’s seat. A homemade sunshade made from plastic cardboard. Same for the other windows. I usually leave them slightly open for ventilation. The back window has this sunshade. It comes off very easily. The middle one doesn’t come off easily. The side ones are gone when I wake up in the morning. By the way. I don’t put the driver’s side sun visor up until right before I fall asleep. Because, it keeps coming off whenever I open the door. I put it up right before I go to sleep. It’s 5 PM now. I’ll have dinner after I relax a bit. 7:45 PM. 25°C. Leftovers from lunch. Tofu. Tomato. Airplane noise. The plane is still flying. The noise and vibration are intense. Boiled eggs for breakfast. Cut the egg carton into smaller pieces. 24:00. 22°C. Comfortable temperature. Tomorrow, we won’t be sightseeing in Hakodate. We’ll head west without a destination. Good night. Bear.
