Hokkaido Northern Travel Part 4 October 2025 October 2025 Wakkanai City White Road Thank you for watching as always We are in Wakkanai City, Hokkaido We are driving on National Route 238 “Sōya History Road” We are heading for the “White Road” which is part of the Soya Hills in the Soya district of Wakkanai City Please watch the previous video to see the whole of Hokkaido Northern Travel so far This time we are heading towards the “White Road” from the direction of Soya Post Office and Wakkanai Police Station Soya Substation If you go along the road between the post office and the police station you will come across a white road The “white” in the “White Road” is actually made of crushed scallop shells laid out on top The road is narrow so care must be taken when passing oncoming vehicles The total length is about 3 km, and it may be closed in winter (roughly November to early May) From here the road becomes dirt and becomes a white road The tourist guide shows a route that enters the white road from the opposite side of Cape Soya, It seems that they recommend this. There are trees on both sides of the road, so caution is required for vehicles with high clearance. After driving a while, the view opens up and pastures spread out on both sides of the road. The contrast of the green pastures, white road, and blue sky is very impressive. Photo of the opposite side of the direction of travel. The white road stretching out towards the sea and Rishiri Island look beautiful. The white road continues. There is a slightly larger parking lot here, so this might be a good place to park your motorcycle or car. From around here, you can see several wind turbines for wind power generation in the Soya Hills. There were also people taking photos here. This is the end of the white road. From here, the white road ends and a spectacular view of the Soya Hills unfolds. A gentle hilly region stretches out behind Cape Soya . Continue on through the Soya Hills and head towards Cape Soya. The Soya Hills are This “periglacial landform” was formed by repeated freezing and thawing of the ground during the Ice Age, and has been designated a “Hokkaido Heritage Site.” The area around Cape Soya is a windy area with an average wind speed of over 7.5 m/s throughout the year. There are 57 wind turbines in the Soya Hills, with a total output of 57,000 kilowatts, making it one of the largest wind farms in Japan. It is said that the amount of electricity generated is equivalent to about 60% of the annual electricity consumption of Wakkanai City. The hills are home to the “Soya Misaki Ranch,” which uses more than 2,000 hectares of pasture to raise black cattle, Japanese beef cattle, and Holsteins. The windmills on the Soya Hills Continue on towards Cape Soya and you will see the mountain “Maruyama” (167 m above sea level) in front of you. m) There is a Self-Defense Force radar facility at the top of the mountain, so entry is prohibited. It is close to the northernmost tip of Hokkaido, and geographically it is located within sight of Russia, so it is thought that a facility for surveillance and warning purposes has been installed. Cows are grazing on the left. Turn left here. The spectacular view of the Soya Hills continues. Birds are flying, fanned by the wind. Turn right here. Once you reach this point, you will see the Soya Strait. The Soya Hills have a walking route called the Footpath Course, where you can walk while enjoying the natural scenery. There are two footpath courses: a long course (about 4 hours) and a short course (about 2 hours), and it seems that you can choose according to your stamina and time. Turn left here. On your left you will see the Wakkanai City Soya Hills Observation and Rest Facility. It has a windmill-shaped exterior and an observation deck on the second floor. You will see the Soya Cape Lighthouse in front of you. If you go down here, you will reach Soya Cape . Arriving at Soya Cape A walk at Soya Cape Japan’s northernmost point, 45 degrees 31 minutes 22 seconds north latitude. Mamiya Rinzo “Monument of the Northernmost Point of Japan” by an explorer and surveyor in the late Edo period who conducted surveys of Hokkaido and Sakhalin .
