It is counted as one of Japan’s three great waterfalls, and the magnificent and dynamic sight of it falling down a 97-meter-high cliff at once attracts many tourists. You can enjoy different scenery in each season. Lake Chuzenji is a beautiful lake representative of Nikko National Park, which is also the source of Kegon Falls. It is said that the valley was dammed up by lava from the eruption of Mt. Nantai about 20,000 years ago, resulting in its original form. There are many ways to enjoy the area, such as driving along the lake, cruising on a pleasure boat, or renting a swan boat. Many tourists visit as a famous spot for autumn leaves, but according to the Weather News website, the best time to see them in 2024 is expected to start around October 25th🍁🍁On the north shore of Lake Chuzenji, at the foot of Mt. Nantai. Futarasan Shrine Chugu Shrine is located in a scenic area. It is called Chugu Shrine because it is located between the Okumiya of Futarasan Shrine at the top of Mt. Nantai and the Futarasan Head Office in Nikko City. Chugu Shrine was built in 784 (Enryaku 3), and seven buildings within the shrine grounds, including the main hall, have been designated as important cultural properties. Next to the main shrine is the trailhead for Mt. Nantai, which is open from April 25th to November 11th. One of the three famous Oku-Nikko waterfalls, this waterfall is formed just before the Yukawa River that flows through Senjogahara flows into Lake Chuzenji. The area near the basin of the waterfall is divided into two by a rock, so the rock looks like a dragon’s head and the waterfall looks like a whisker, hence the name. You can see the spectacular scenery up close from the observation platform. You can also see the waterfall from the side by walking up the walkway next to it. Ryuzu Waterfall is 210 meters high, and you can see up close how it flows down the stepped rocky area. You can see it from the top of the waterfall, but you can also walk up the promenade mentioned earlier, or park your car at the Ryuzu Takigami parking lot. The name is said to originate from the myth that Lake Chuzenji was a battleground where the god of Mt. Nantai and the god of Mt. Akagi fought over Lake Chuzenji. As many as 350 types of plants grow naturally in the wetlands, and they change their appearance in each season. This waterfall is approximately 70 meters high and 110 meters long, located at the southern end of Lake Yunoko, and you can see the impressive sight up close. The lake was formed when Yukawa, the main water source of Lake Chuzenji, was dammed by the eruption of Mt. Mitsudake. There is a walking path along the lakeshore, and you can walk around it in about an hour. The hot spring town at the back of the lake also has a footbath called Anyo-no-Yu (closed in winter) that you can use for free, as well as facilities where you can enjoy a day trip to the hot springs.
