Shimo-Aratani, Abandoned Village in Ikeda Fukui Japan 2025 [4K Binaural]

This is my second time filming the abandoned village of Shimo-Aratani. I first visited and filmed in the spring of 2021. At that time, the shrine (2:41) was severely damaged but was still standing and retained its form. Unfortunately, that footage was lost in a fire, so I cannot show it. Due to construction work on the Asuwa River Dam, this village is now in a closed-off section and cannot be reached by car or other vehicles. I went by bicycle. Along the way, I encountered several local people who said they had come to forage for wild vegetables.
Hometown Marker (8:10) English Translation:
Around 1020 AD, Riemon, Zenkobō, and Hiranabe migrated from Heisenji Temple to Shimo-Aratani, Aza Nijūban-chi and established the village.
Later, twenty-five households with over 150 people made their living in this mountain village through cultivating small rice paddies and fields, sericulture, and charcoal production. In 1935, Mr. Sogi from Tokyo established Fukuju Iron Industry Co., Ltd. and reopened the gold mine. Over 200 employees and their families, along with doctors and barbers, resided there. However, this operation closed in less than ten years due to changes in gold demand with the outbreak of the Pacific War.
Subsequently, due to the changes of the times, flood damage in 1961, and heavy snowfall in 1963, all villagers relocated to various places after 1975, leaving behind their hometown of over 900 years.
August 2007 AD: Shimo-Aratani Hachiman Shrine and Atago Shrine were enshrined together at Keikan Shrine in Mizuumi, Ikeda Town.
