【九州観光】まるで異世界!九州旅行におすすめの観光スポット30選をご紹介します

Hello, I’m Bien. I travel two to three times a month , and it’s been a little over two years since I started uploading travel videos to YouTube. Among those trips, I’ve traveled to Kyushu quite a few times. Today, I’m going to introduce some breathtaking spots in Kyushu that I’m glad I went to, and that I want to go back to every year . Honestly, I’m really into Kyushu, and I’ve been there so many times and visited so many different places, it was really hard to choose just the right ones. So, I had to decide on a category, or it would just end up being a 100-person list, so I’ll mainly introduce breathtaking spots with beautiful nature and otherworldly places. I’ll also introduce Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki. I’ll be introducing all the prefectures in Kagoshima, but first I’ll say that in Fukuoka Prefecture, I’ve mostly focused on sightseeing and gourmet food in urban areas like Hakata and Kitakyushu rather than visiting scenic spots. Fukuoka Prefecture is the only prefecture with extremely few spots. Please note (I’ve also left out remote islands like Amami and Iki). Many of the spots I’ll be introducing this time are difficult to get to without a car. Simply put, there are many spots that are difficult to access but have amazing views, so I’ll get straight to it. I actually wanted to narrow it down to 10 scenic spots in Kyushu, but for some reason I couldn’t decide, so I ended up with 30. So, I’ll be introducing the prefectures randomly. One of the scenic spots I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip is Kusasenrigahama Beach . It’s one of the most famous tourist spots in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture. It’s a heavenly scenic spot at 1,100m above sea level. This video shows the end of January, so it’s winter . The atmosphere changes dramatically with each season, so I recommend visiting once in summer and once in winter. And it looked like this in May. The greenery was so beautiful, the temperature was just right, and I was in the best mood. It was a 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot to the top of the hill, and it looked like this. You can see the impressive Aso-Nakadake crater in the distance. The atmosphere of the road was also really nice. However, there was a lot of droppings on the ground, so you need to watch your step or you might step in one. There was quite a bit . Parking is paid, but there are toilets, souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants nearby. Access is a 50-minute drive from Kumamoto Airport. The second scenic spot I was glad to visit on my Kyushu trip is Okawa Falls . Located in Minami-Osumi Town, Kagoshima Prefecture, this waterfall has a drop of 46m and a width of 60m. It’s quite wide, so you’ll be overwhelmed by the mystical scenery. It was also used as a filming location for the movie Kingdom. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the waterfall. It’s a bit of a long walk, but the promenade is well maintained and very easy to walk on, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way. The river is really beautiful and it was amazing. By the way, it’s over 100km from Kagoshima Airport, so it takes over two hours by car, but if you’re from Kanoya city, it’s 30km, so it’s about an hour by car. It’s Ogawa Falls on Google Maps. It’s recommended to head downstream from the parking lot, but be careful as the road is narrow for the last kilometer or so. Ama-no- Yasugawara is the third scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. It ‘s located in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. It has an otherworldly atmosphere and a mystical landscape. From the Nishi-Hongu Shrine of Ama-no-Iwato Shrine, walk along the Iwato River for about ten minutes. The path is well maintained, and there’s a bridge like this along the way, which offered great views. This is the spot where the eight million gods are said to have gathered to discuss matters when Amaterasu Omikami hid herself in the Ama-no-Iwato cave . It’s also said that if you make a wish by stacking stones, it will come true , making it a popular power spot. There are many stones piled up all around like this. Access is about an hour’s drive from Nobeoka city and about an hour and a half’s drive from Kumamoto Airport. This is the fourth scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. Like the first one, Kusasenrigahama, it’s in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was also the setting for the TV drama “Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea.” Apparently, it got its name from the fact that it looks like a battleship when viewed like this. You can get there by boat from Nagasaki Port, but there are various conditions, and it’s surprisingly rare to be able to land on the island. I went there during a trip to Nagasaki in March, and was able to land safely. It had a unique atmosphere that was different from old buildings like shrines. The parking lot at Nagasaki Port gets really crowded, so if you’re going by car, I recommend taking the first boat there in the morning. 6. Harajiri Falls, a 120m wide, 20m high waterfall in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture. It’s a short walk from the roadside station, making it incredibly easy to visit, but it was quite crowded even on weekdays . There are several viewpoints, and the view from the bridge is particularly stunning. You can walk above and below the falls, so taking commemorative photos was a lot of fun. It’s unusual for such a large waterfall, though. It’s not like you have to go through mountain paths . However, flying from Oita Airport is extremely far— over 100km—so I took a lunch break in Beppu City before heading out. 7. Kagamiyama Observatory, a scenic spot in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. It’s an observation deck at the summit of Mount Kagami, 283m above sea level. The road to the summit is full of steep slopes and sharp curves. The road is wide and separated into lanes, so it’s easy to drive. It takes about 10-15 minutes from the parking lot to the observation deck. I walked there, but at first I just thought I’d drop by because there was an observation deck nearby, but it was a type of observation deck I’d never seen before and I was impressed by the amazing view. I definitely recommend stopping by when you visit Saga Prefecture. It’s a scenic spot #8 that I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. If you Google it, almost every website says Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, but the correct name is Kumanoimasu Shrine (possibly both are correct). This mystical shrine has become a hot topic on social media for its straight staircase that seems to lead to another world . The enshrined deities are Izanagi and Izanami. It gets quite crowded with foreign tourists, so if you want to take your time and take commemorative photos, I recommend going first thing in the morning. It was apparently founded between the end of the Kamakura period and the Muromachi period. I went in late January and May , but the stairs are quite long and the road is frozen in winter, so I don’t recommend going in winter. However, the view is truly mystical. And as you climb the path leading further inside the main hall, you’ll find Ugetoiwa, a rock formation over 10 meters long and wide, believed to be the attendant of Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto. It is said that Onihachihoshi kicked it down. The large hole piercing the huge rocky mountain is a symbol of the ability to achieve any goal, no matter how difficult, and is said to bring good fortune in passing exams. The ninth scenic spot worth visiting on a Kyushu trip: Unzen Jigoku. Located in the hot spring town of Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, it is a scenic spot where you can truly feel the breath of the earth. There are hells with various names, and it takes about an hour to walk around them all . A five- to six-minute walk from the parking lot leads to the entrance, and another three to four minutes from there leads to this mystical place. There is a shop selling hot spring eggs called Unzen Jigoku Kobo, but when I went there it was early in the morning, so it wasn’t open yet. The tour of the hells in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture is also fun, but the tour of Unzen’s hells feels like nature has left it untouched. It’s impressive, and I recommend it. The tenth scenic spot worth visiting on a Kyushu trip: Sogi Falls. Located in Isa City, Kagoshima Prefecture, it offers a spectacular view that makes it hard to believe you’re in Japan. A five-minute walk from the parking lot leads to an observation deck. The waterfall is about 210 meters wide. It’s said to be 12 meters high. It was raining that day, which was unfortunate , but the water volume was so high that it was absolutely amazing. The impact was incredible. If you’re going to go, it’s definitely better to go on a sunny day, but the view is amazing no matter what the weather . I’ve been there three times in total, and the first time I went, I was so moved that I was in a daze. It’s probably one of those scenic spots that I want to erase my memory and go back to. It ‘s 40km from Kagoshima Airport, about an hour by car. It’s a little difficult to get to as it’s located northwest of Kagoshima Airport, but I think it’s a scenic spot that’s definitely worth going to, even if it’s a long way away. 11 Scenic Spots I’m Glad I Visited on My Kyushu Trip: Nagabeta Seabed Road. Straight to the sea in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The road leading to this spot is incredibly mystical. It’s submerged at high tide, so the view is beautiful, but you can only get to the end at low tide. I was lucky enough to see the view at both high and low tide when I visited. The parking lot is spacious and easy to park in, and there are vending machines and souvenir shops. There’s also a statue of Jinbe from the popular anime One Piece. #12 Scenic Spot I Wish I Visited on My Kyushu Trip: Futamigaura: The Underwater Torii Gate. It ‘s located in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture. My first trip to Kyushu was to Fukuoka Prefecture, and I visited Itoshima on that trip. It’s about an hour’s drive from Hakata Station, though it may take longer depending on the time of day and the day of the week. The large white torii gate standing on the coast was truly impressive . There’s a paid parking lot, located just a 2-3 minute walk away. Low tide is better for taking commemorative photos than high tide. Also, this spot is easily accessible from Hakata, and because it’s a popular spot, it can get quite crowded, so if you want to take commemorative photos, it’s best to go early in the morning (there will be a line). #13 Scenic Spot I Wish I Visited on My Kyushu Trip: Koga Falls, Kumamoto Prefecture. It’s in Aso, and this is where I saw my first frozen waterfall in my life . It’s more of a personal memory spot than a scenic spot (but it’s still a spectacular view). It was quite a walk from the parking lot, about 20 minutes, mostly uphill. However, I was so impressed when I arrived! There were also several photographers with tripods . This is Takachiho Gorge, the 14th scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip . It’s so common that I thought I didn’t need to go in. Well, I couldn’t miss it! It’s a spectacular spot in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. I’m sure many people choose to travel to Miyazaki or Kumamoto just to see the view of Takachiho Gorge . This is a truly mystical valley with cliffs 80-100m high that stretch on and on . It was apparently formed when the Gokase River eroded the fire flow that erupted from the volcanic activity of Mount Aso. It’s truly a natural art created by mother nature. Manai Falls also flows here, and it’s designated as one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls. The view from the observation deck is amazing, but you can get even closer by boat. However, it’s extremely crowded regardless of the day of the week, so you might get bumped into a few times. You can reserve this rental boat two weeks in advance on the website. By the way, I went on a winter weekday in December, and the wait was 30-40 minutes. Price The access time seems to vary depending on the season and day of the week. Access is about an hour and a half from both Kumamoto Airport and Nobeoka city. Nanatsugama is one of the best scenic spots I visited on my Kyushu trip. Located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, this scenic spot is designated as a national natural monument. Apparently, this unique scenery was created by the erosion of the Genkai Sea’s waves. You can admire this artistic landscape created by nature from the observation deck. The regularly-spaced, pillar-like rock formations are called columnar formations, and were created when lava contracted as it cooled and solidified. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the observation deck , but the path is well-maintained and very easy to follow. The site is quite large, and there are several other observation decks, so if you have the time, it might be worth trying to conquer them all. Access is about 70km from Saga Airport. It takes more than two hours by car, but it’s about a 30-minute drive from Karatsu Station. Cape Sata, the 16th scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip, is the southernmost point of Minami Osumi Town, Kagoshima Prefecture. It’s a scenic spot at the southernmost tip of the mainland. It’s located here in Kagoshima Prefecture. It’s 130km from the airport, so it might be too far, but it’s a wonderful scenic spot. Even just walking around is fun, and it ‘s a place that makes you want to give up, but it’s just the distance. The roads aren’t super narrow or winding , and there aren’t long stretches of mountain road . The drive along the way was also quite fun (I recommend staying in Kanoya City and going the next morning). If you’re interested, please check it out (I recommend staying in Kanoya City and going the next morning). It’s about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the observation deck . The road is well maintained, so as long as you’re wearing comfortable clothing, it shouldn’t be a problem. However, there was an unobstructed view of the observation deck, and there were incredibly strong winds, so be careful. When I went, the wind was so strong it was like a typhoon and I was breathless . 17. Amaterasu Railway, a popular attraction that utilizes the facilities of the former Takachiho Railway, which was closed due to damage caused by a typhoon in 2005. You can enjoy spectacular views that can only be seen by riding this super cart. The round trip from the boarding point to the Takachiho Bridge is about 5 km and takes 30 minutes. There are two tunnels on the way to the Takachiho Bridge, and you can enjoy illuminations that make use of the darkness inside the tunnels. The view from the Takachiho Bridge, which is about 105 meters high, is the best. I went in December, so it was cold, but the impact was so great that I forgot about the cold . The view is beautiful as it is, but they also offered complimentary soap bubbles, which made it a great spot for taking commemorative photos . 18. Kagoshima Prefecture This is a scenic spot in the southernmost area of Ibusuki City. There is also a lighthouse, but if you walk beyond it, a unique view like the end of the world unfolds before you . I visited it three times in total. The mountain you can see in the background is Mount Kaimondake, and I remember being impressed by the incredible power of the mountains in the background. It is about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot. The nearest parking lot has a free system if you buy something at the convenience store, and there is also a free municipal parking lot about 200 meters away. It is about a 30-minute drive from Ibusuki Station. On the way to the lighthouse, you will also find Ryugu Shrine and a statue of Urashima Taro. By the way, if you walk to the end of Nagasaki Nose, the promenade disappears halfway and becomes a rough road like this , so be careful of your shoes and clothing. This is the 19th scenic spot that I was glad to visit on my Kyushu trip: Kujukushima, Sasae, Nagasaki Prefecture The Kujukushima Islands, a scenic spot in Sasebo City, are a scenic spot consisting of a complex ria coastline and 208 large and small islands that stretch out at the westernmost tip of mainland Japan. The name “Kujukushima” comes from the meaning of “countless, numerous.” There are several observation decks offering panoramic views of the Kujukushima Islands. When I visited Sasebo, I saw the view from Tenkaiho and Kujukushima Tourist Park . It’s about a 20-minute drive from Sasebo Station, and both Tenkaiho and Kujukushima Tourist Park are close by, so if you’re going, I recommend visiting both. I went on a sunny day at the end of July, and it was incredibly hot, but the views were even more amazing. I think it’s a spectacular view that can only be seen here . You can tour the Kujukushima Islands by sightseeing boat. Incidentally, the weather was nice that evening, so I watched the sunset from Funakoshi Observatory. The view was spectacular. This is the scenic spot #20 I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip: Sakurajima. It’s an active volcano located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. I’m from the Kanto region, so I didn’t know about it until I went. It’s still erupting multiple times, and volcanic ash is falling quite often. It’s amazing that, despite being such an active volcano, Kagoshima City, with a population of about 590,000, is located just 4km across the sea from it. It’s a rare volcano, even on a global scale . Looking at it like this, it looks like a remote, unexplored area, but you can get there in just 15 minutes by taking the Sakurajima Ferry, which is located near Kagoshima City. There are many Sakurajima ferries, and if you’re coming from Kagoshima City, you’ll need to take the ferry. If you’re coming from Tarumi, you can land by car. Sakurajima has roadside stations and several observation decks, so it’s recommended for those who like driving, touring, and solo travel. It’s truly impressive. I’ve visited Sakurajima three times, and it’s quite crowded even on weekdays. It seems to be full of foreign tourists and group tours (I was the only one there, lol). Even just on Sakurajima, there are foot baths, walking trails, and a visitor center. There are so many things to see, I ‘ll skip over them this time, but for more details, please check out the video about my trip to Kagoshima. Nabegataki Falls is the 21st scenic spot I was glad to visit on my Kyushu trip. It’s a waterfall with a distinctive curtain-like atmosphere, located in Oguni Town, north of Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture. It has a drop of about 10m and a width of 20m. It’s said to have been created by a massive eruption about 90,000 years ago that created the Aso caldera. The waterfall itself is beautiful, but another feature is that you can walk behind the waterfall . If you go further in, the atmosphere becomes like this . It’s a tourist spot where you can not only enjoy the scenery, but also have the rare experience of walking behind the waterfall . However, depending on the amount of water, the wind can be quite strong, and you’ll likely get wet, so I recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet or dirty. Reservations are required via the website. Please see the website for details. However, if it’s a weekday, you probably won’t be unable to go on the day, but it’s best to make a reservation online in advance. The admission fee is 300 yen per adult. The opening hours are from 9:00 AM, with the last admission at 4:30 PM. This is Chinda Falls, a scenic spot in Bungo-Ono City, Oita Prefecture. It’s near the Harajiri Falls I mentioned earlier. When I went, there was no water flowing from the falls, and the water was being released from a position a little further back like this. My main purpose wasn’t the falls, but rather to see the mysterious scenery of the ruins of this power plant. Whether you look at it from above, the side, or even walk inside, it’s a very mystical and scenic spot that makes you feel like you’ve entered another world. This is Oshidoishi Hill, a scenic spot in Kumamoto Prefecture that I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. This is a scenic spot in Minamioguni Town. Honestly, it’s not too far from Aso in a straight line (about 20km from Aso Station). The road is narrow and steep, so driving there was a bit scary . After a 15-minute climb from the parking lot, an incredible view unfolds before your eyes. It’s one of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen. There are also megaliths here, and some of the rocks have Sumerian writings from 4,000 years ago engraved into them, making it a very valuable historical spot (it also seems to have a spiritual element). It was raining when I visited, so it’s one of the spots I’d like to visit again on a sunny day . It ‘s about a 40-minute drive from Aso Station, and the admission fee is 300 yen per adult. This is Kawauchi Pass Observatory, 24, a scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. Located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, this scenic spot offers a wonderful view from the parking lot, like a staircase leading to heaven. The observation deck is open, allowing for a 360-degree view. It’s about an hour’s drive from Sasebo , and 10-15 minutes from Hirado city. Yes, you can. It’s Chiririn Road, the 25th scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. It’s a mysterious road that appears at low tide in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It’s a recommended spot for a walk, as it makes you feel good when you walk on a sunny day. There’s also a place called Uomi-dake Observatory nearby, and although you have to drive up a narrow mountain road, the view from the observation deck is amazing . Chirin-ga-shima is an uninhabited island in Kagoshima Bay, with a circumference of about three kilometers and an area of about 60 hectares. It’s Ishihara-dake Forest Park, the 26th scenic spot I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. It ‘s a mysterious, dungeon-like spot in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It was once a fortress built to defend Sasebo Port and was apparently a battery equipped with many cannons . Currently, the site is used as a forest park where you can camp and experience nature . When I went there, it was the end of July, and it was a hot time, but as soon as I entered the parking lot, the air changed, it was cold, and I remember being scared. Also, when I went in the summer, there were a lot of horseflies and insects, and it felt like they were following me the whole time , and even though I sprayed insect repellent, it didn’t work at all, so I left after a few minutes. My stay was short, but the dungeon-like atmosphere was very impressive, and it still remains in my memory. Next time I go, I’d like to go with someone else and explore all the way to the back. It was scary being alone, so I’m glad I went to 27 Gorogataki Falls on my Kyushu trip. It’s a powerful waterfall in Yamato Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. There are several view spots, including a place about a five-minute walk from the parking lot and a suspension bridge further in. You can also walk down to the base of the falls. The drop is about 50m and you can experience the powerful spray of water. However, it seems like not many people come here and the path is steep. There are spiders and insects, so I blocked the path with my selfie stick like this. When you reach the base of the falls, the atmosphere looks like this. It is a scenic spot that you will definitely be overwhelmed by the mystical atmosphere. The path is steep and on rainy days it turns into a small river like this, so it may be better to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. 28 Scenic spots worth visiting on your Kyushu trip Scenic spot in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture It’s a pot. It’s about a 10-minute drive from the popular tourist spot of Yufuin. At an altitude of about 680m, you can get a panoramic view of the beautiful cityscape of Yufuin. I’ve visited Yufu City a few times, and the view from the observation deck is also really nice. What do you call this road ? Is it a driving course? From around Beppu Ropeway, there is Prefectural Route 11, and the scenery on this road is really nice, so if you like driving or touring, you should definitely try it. I also recommend taking a walk around here. You can enjoy beautiful scenery that is different from the Aso area in Kumamoto Prefecture. It’s a scenic spot that I’m glad I visited on my Kyushu trip. 29 Sogi Power Plant Ruins, Kagoshima Prefecture This is a mysterious and scenic spot in Isa City. This power plant was completed in 1909, and its output was one of the largest in the country at the time. It is also said to be the birthplace of Japanese science factories. It was submerged when the dam was completed in 1965, but it appears like this between May and September when the water level drops. I visited on a rainy day, and the atmosphere was truly amazing, so I just stared blankly at it. It is also close to Sogi Falls, which I introduced earlier, so I recommend visiting both . 30 Scenic Spots I Wish I Visited on My Kyushu Trip: Futamata Bridge. It is located in Misato Town, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is also called the Twin Bridges because two bridges intersect at a right angle. However, my personal favorite is this side of the bridge. The view along the river behind this large arch is incredibly mystical and moving. You can enjoy the view from the bridge , and you can also go under the bridge, where the riverside has this atmosphere. Well, at first I stopped by because it seemed like a tourist spot ,
but it was amazing ! I was overwhelmed by the unique atmosphere. A few minutes by car, there is a place called the Octagonal Tunnel, and the atmosphere here is mysterious, as if it leads to another world. These are my top 30 recommended scenic spots that I’m glad I visited on my trip to Kyushu. Wow, it’s a bit biased, but by the way, this view is Yufuin. I chose these based on my personal preferences, so it’s a bit biased , but there are plenty of other great spots that I haven’t introduced yet. This time, I’ve mainly collected otherworldly or natural scenery, so it turned out like this. I ‘m also thinking of making videos introducing gourmet tourist spots that I’m glad I visited by prefecture, so please take this opportunity to subscribe to my channel and give it a thumbs up. Thank you for watching.
