Higashiao, An Abandoned Village in Ikeda Fukui, Japan [4K Binaural]

Higashiao (Abandoned Village) — Ikeda Town, Fukui [4K Binaural]
Hidden deep in the mountains of Ikeda Town, Fukui Prefecture, the settlement of Higashiao once stood almost directly above the stunning Ryūsōga Falls. Centuries ago, this remote village thrived on the cultivation of kōzo and mitsumata, and on orien (a mountain herb) grown on steep slopes.

By the mid-20th century, however, heavy snowfall and difficult access triggered a rapid population decline. Although a branch school once operated here, the village was eventually abandoned during the 1950s-60s. Later, the site briefly served as a camp ground, but today only a few work-shack-like structures remain, quietly weathering the years.

  1. 7:45 English translation for the information board:

Higashiao Campsite, Designated by the Prefecture

In the late Taisho era (c. 1912-1926), the settlement flourished as an agricultural and forestry community, counting over a dozen households and having a branch school attended by thirty students. After that, starting in the early Showa era (c. 1926-1989), the branch school was open only in winter, and life came to depend on charcoal making. Following the heavy rainfall of Showa 36 (1961) and the heavy snowfall of Showa 38 (1963), ____ currently, not a single household ____ became.
