【薩摩の武士が生きた町】日本一の巨樹「大クス」と武家門のまち

Hello! This is Yabi Travel. This trip is to Aira City, located in the central part of Kagoshima Prefecture. We’ll be touring the town of Kamo. Kamo boasts Japan’s largest Kamo Great Cypress and samurai residences. It is a historic town known for being the home of Kamōroku. Kamo Hachiman Shrine is a venerable shrine built in 1123. He is revered as the god of commerce, scholarship, the arts, and safe childbirth. Surrounded by so much greenery, it feels absolutely wonderful! The Great Kusu Tree of Kamo was designated in 1988. It has been certified as Japan’s largest tree!! It seems that even when Kamo Hachiman Shrine was built, it was already large. It is said to be over 1,500 years old. The tree stands approximately 30 meters tall, with a root circumference of 33 meters. The circumference of the trunk is 24 meters. There is a large cavity inside the trunk. It’s said to be as large as eight tatami mats! I’d like to take a walk around the shrine as well. This is a samurai settlement called the foothills, established by the Satsuma domain during the Edo period. Along the Samurai Residence Street, centered around the Okarayamon Gate, Many samurai residences and stone walls remained unchanged from their original appearance. Kakehashi Slope is located about 10 km northwest of the base of Mount Kamo. It is said that the stone pavement was completed around 1738 during the Edo period on this highway. It was used as an important road connecting Kamo and Imuta. This location is on a steep mountain road. It is said to have been the most difficult section. Currently, 661 meters remain in their original state. Since I was getting hungry, I came to a popular hamburger restaurant. Using Aira City’s soul food, flying fish meat I ordered a Dante Burger. The crunchy texture was absolutely delicious! Kamo Castle was the seat of the Kamo clan, located atop Ryūga Mountain at an elevation of 160 meters. Because it was situated in a terrain resembling a dragon lying down It was also known as Ryūga Castle. It is currently developed as a park. It has become a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing where many cherry trees bloom. Sanskrit characters are carved into the rock face of Kamo Castle over a length of approximately 120 meters. The number of Sanskrit characters reaches as high as 1,700, making it the largest single collection of its kind. It is said to be Japan’s largest rock-carved Sanskrit character. The tomb of Kamō-don dates from the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period. This is the grave of the successive leaders of the Kamo clan and their family. Surrounded by tranquil nature, with a circumference of 4 km and a depth of 30 m I’ve arrived at the mysterious Sumiyoshi Pond. In spring, it is beloved as a famous spot for cherry blossoms. In summer, it bustles with families enjoying outdoor life.
