Cat Paradise 💕🐱 A Japanese Retro Inn Where 13 Cats Come to Your Room. | Shoraku Ryokan in Ozu | 松楽旅館

Cats come one after another through the little window at the ryokan (Japanese inn). I stayed at a ryokan with 13 resident cats. In the morning, they give me a special wake-up call. At night, we sleep together under the futon. 😴 A trip filled with delicious Ozu food and the calm charm of the old town. Hello! Today, I’m heading to Matsuyama City Station. Ehime is about an hour and a half from Tokyo by plane. The IYOTETSU tram runs through Matsuyama’s streets. You can reach today’s inn by either bus or train. The timing worked out, so I’ll take the bus. In the afternoon, buses run about every two hours. A round-trip ticket is a better deal. Round trip: 2,150 yen. Departure is at 1:50 p.m. Here comes the bus. It’s about an hour by bus to the ryokan’s stop. Ehime is home to Dogo Onsen, Japan’s oldest hot spring. And also the Shimanami Kaido, a bridge road across the Seto Inland Sea. Ozu, where I’m heading now, is a castle town since the Edo era. JR Ozu Station. If you come by train, you’ll transfer to the bus here. Hand over the ticket together with the small numbered slip. The inn is right by Ozu Castle. It’s about a five-minute walk. I’ve arrived. So cute. Hello there. So many cats! 😳 Even the indoor slippers have paw prints. 🐈 Two adorable staff members welcome me at the front desk. 🐱 Nice to meet you, Rin-kun. Mimi-chan. The three siblings, Chibi-chan. I heard they were rescued this year. Kuuta-kun. He has an amazing special skill. He’s a master of flying hair ties. What a record! A secret talent… practiced when no one was watching. Well done, Kuuta-kun. Such a big record. Sumomo-chan is 15 years old, a sweet grandma. The owner kindly gave me some cat treats. Yuzu-kun, want some? Now it’s your turn, Rin-kun. Yuzu-kun is still growing. He just can’t resist snacks. Owner: The kittens can’t wait yet. The adult cats know they’ll get treats, so they can wait. Here you go. Good boy, Rin-kun. You waited so patiently. Now, let’s go to my room for today. These manga books are free to read. This is Hana-chan, the idol cat. Nice to meet you. And here’s Uni-kun. On the way from the second to the third floor, there’s a cat tower. Looks like he’s joining his siblings’ invitation to play. Today’s room is No. 206 (with a small window). A simple Japanese-style room, ¥3,800 per night (no meals) Oh, when did you come in? ☺️ That was Mimi-chan. I tie the little window open with a string. Then… Cats come to visit whenever they feel like it. The room has towels, yukata, toothbrushes, and more. There’s also a file with all the cats’ names. With the teacups in the room, you can pour tea or hot water from the hallway. Aki-kun, did you come to see me? Here you go. Oh, Hana-chan, you came too. First comes the patrol. Where Hana-chan is looking… It’s Aki-kun. Looks like he’s going to relax here. Is Hana-chan curious about the sounds in the hallway? Sounds like other guests are playing in the hallway. Yuzu-kun. Uni-kun. Hana-chan, you came back too. Such a cuddly sweetheart. Komugi-chan. Yuzu-kun, your paws are so big. You’ll grow up to be a big boy. What’s that sound?? Mimi-chan?? She just came through the little window carrying a toy. Uni-kun, Mimi-chan is amazing, isn’t she? It’s not “play with me,” but more like “Look! I brought this toy for you!” 😼 Mimi-chan, you’re a genius. Such a clever girl. The cats rest from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Kuuta-kun, you’re such a hard worker. Suzu-chan loves getting her bottom tapped. Owner: Time to go home, come on now. But Uni-kun doesn’t want to leave. Owner: Uni-chan… Good job today, everyone. 👋 See you tonight, Yuzu-kun. Tonight, Yuzu-kun will be staying in my room. Let’s go for dinner and a little walk. Ozu Castle is right by the inn. Its keep is a rare full wooden reconstruction in Japan. The nostalgic streets made for a wonderful evening walk. Koi carp are swimming. At “Amimoto,” a local restaurant in Ozu known for its fresh fish dishes. I’m curious about the fried fish, Amagi… Okami-san: Here you are. This is Amagi. Okami-san: You can eat it all, from head to tail. Okami-san: Please pour this over the chilled tofu. This is my first time trying Amagi. Sea bream soup. The fish was fluffy and so delicious. Thank you for the meal. Let’s head back to the ryokan. After a bath, I’ll go and pick up Yuzu-kun. There were two baths available. *Overnight stays with the cats are not guaranteed. Stays may not be possible depending on the cats’ health and the inn’s circumstances.* I go downstairs to get a set with food, water, and treats. Setting out his food and water. And preparing the litter box. The owner kindly brought Yuzu-kun to my room. First, a thank-you treat for coming,
Yuzu-kun’s special snack. 🐾 Niboshi (dried sardines) are his favorite. Then he enjoys some food. When he was just about done playing with toys… Yuzu-kun discovered something amazing. He can’t take his eyes off a little bug. Yuzu-kun, the bug is too high up, it won’t come play with you. You’re all tired out from playing now. Too cute… He’s kneading on me. 🥺 I finally got him to sleep. An angel. Good night. 😴 He’s still little, so he wakes up a few times at night. There, there, little one. Good morning. Yuzu-kun is extra cuddly from the morning. By 6 a.m., I have to let him back out into the hallway. Yuzu-kun, let’s have breakfast first. Alright, let’s go. See you later! Good morning, Aki-kun. They’re all making morning calls to the guests’ rooms. Busy, going from room to room. Good morning, Hana-chan. Last night, Yuzu-kun stayed over. Sumomo-chan. Uni-kun. They’re finishing Yuzu-kun’s leftover food. Su-chan, what scent did you pick up there? Good morning, Meron-chan. No way… Rolling over in the exact same spot as Sumomo-chan. Meron-chan is at max excitement too. Kuuta-kun, you came as well. 😆 Maybe it’s a secret power spot. Out in the hallway, patrols are still going on. Good morning, Mimi-chan. I head downstairs to return the litter box and food set. I heard Rin-kun usually stays on the first floor. Uni-kun’s big shoe cabinet adventure. Komugi-chan crawled under my skirt. Suzu-chan is playing with me using her tail. Thank you, Suzu-chan. I’ll enjoy the café latte the inn kindly prepared in my room. Mimi-chan came to visit me. Komugi-chan and Hana-chan. Hana-chan, are you okay? Come again soon. The little cats are having their morning workout. Time to head up to the third floor. 👋 Komugi-chan. Clingy little Aki-kun. Rolling over. Sumomo-chan meows just like my own cat. 😳 Yes, yes, Lady Sumomo.
Your request is granted. 🐈 So cute, Su-chan. Are you satisfied now? Topping up with extra power. ✨ 👋 I’m going for lunch first, and then to Garyu Sanso, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The three little ones are sound asleep together. Yuzu-kun’s paw has such a lovely pattern. A cute tail is peeking out. Aki-kun, I’m heading out for a bit. Right by the inn runs the Hiji River. It’s famous for sweetfish fishing and cormorant fishing. I’ve arrived at the restaurant for lunch. Ozu Robata Aburaya. This place was once a ryokan from the late Edo period, now renovated into a restaurant. It has a nostalgic old-time atmosphere. I can’t decide between Ehime’s famous “Tai-meshi” or “Tonguri Mabushi.” Everyone ordered Tonguri Mabushi, so I went with that too. Tonguri Mabushi (pork simmered with chestnuts in a sweet soy sauce) – 1,500 yen. They gave me an instruction sheet on how to enjoy it. First, taste it just as it is. Sweet chestnuts and soy-flavored pork go together so perfectly. 🤤 Next, I poured dashi broth over it. It was absolutely delicious. Thank you for the meal. I stopped by here when I visited Aoshima (Cat Island). It was so wonderful that this is my second visit. Garyu Sanso, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.
Admission: 550 yen. It was built in the Meiji era by a wealthy merchant, Torajiro Kawauchi. The garden, blending with nature, and the river view were absolutely breathtaking. I’m back at the inn. At midday the doors are locked, so I call the owner to let me in. I’m home, Aki-kun. Rin-kun is at the front desk. Komugi-chan is leading me upstairs to the second floor. Yuzu-kun came too. The three of them are often together. I’m glad they were all adopted into this ryokan. Yuzu-kun can’t take his eyes off Komugi-chan. And here comes Uni-kun. When I open the little window, cats come one after another. Aki-kun, the big sweetheart. So cute. Mimi-chan, when did you get up there? Amazing. Mimi-chan really is a genius. Uni-kun seems to love my hat. Time for some treats.
*(To prevent choking, it’s fine to give small amounts with a spoon, etc.)* Well, did you enjoy that? All done. Thank you for the meal. Aki-kun is in his favorite spot. I’ll get back to reading “Detective Conan.” Cats keep coming and going from the room. Thank you for your hard work today, too. See you again. 👋 What should I have for dinner tonight? Nearby is a local favorite, “Teppanyaki Saoya.” They serve Ozu’s specialty Champon (soba-meshi). Homemade potato salad. Beef tendon stew, rich with miso flavor. 😋 And their popular fried rice. A superb fried rice with savory sauce flavor. They had sake from all over Japan. An early bath to relax ♨️ and then it’s time to pick up Mimi-chan. Since it’s the second day, I take a towel from the shelf myself. I came to get Mimi-chan’s welcome set. The owner brings the litter box. Mimi-chan, let’s spend tonight together. First, a little cheers with Churu. Next, Mimi-chan checks my futon. Will she sleep with me tonight? Mimi-chan must be tired—she’s going to bed early. So cute. Good night. 😴 In the night, she slept by my pillow. Good morning. I think this might be my favorite time of all. Mimi-chan’s treat set, with Churu. Here you go. At 6 o’clock, I open the room door. Good morning, Meron-chan. Everyone is busy with their morning call duties. Koume-chan, you came too. Yuzu-kun. Right beside me, it’s Hana-chan. 💖 Until checkout, I’ll play with the little cats. You really like hats, don’t you? Finally, Sumomo-chan came to say goodbye. Thank you for visiting me so many times. See you again. ☺️ Checkout is at 9 a.m. Thank you too, Suzu-chan and Kuuta-kun. What a heartwarming, wonderful ryokan. Thank you all so much for watching.

This time, I visited Shoraku Ryokan, a Japanese traditional inn in Ozu, Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku—a charming place where 13 lovely cats live together. The moment I checked in, the lobby and hallways were full of cats. Some even slipped in through the little window into my room, played with me, and curled up beside me under the futon… It truly felt like a dream 💖
Ozu itself is a historic castle town that has continued since the Edo period. From Ozu Castle to the beautiful villa “Garyu Sanso,” its preserved streets and traditional architecture create a timeless atmosphere. Spending time with the cats while soaking in this peaceful town was simply unforgettable. I’d love for you to join me in video and experience both this cat paradise and the charm of Ozu in Shikoku together ☺️🐈

  6. That was a lovely vlog. I wonder what it was with that spot near your room's door.

  7. ひなびた旅館と猫好きの猫アレルギーにとっては、これほど「行った気分」が嬉しい動画はない。ありがとう。

  8. Brilliant! If only cat sanctuaries around the world did this they would pay for themselves and not rely solely on donations. Plus it is therapy.
