Today, I’m heading to Akita Castle in Akita Prefecture. Akita Castle is an ancient fortress in northern Dewa. I first head to Akita on the Komachi train. I arrived at Akita Station. It’s about a 20-minute bus ride from the station to Akita Castle. I arrived in front of the Akita Castle Ruins Historical Museum. Akita Castle is now a historical park. Akita Castle was the northernmost large-scale local government office from the Nara to Heian periods. The castle was completed in 733. It served as a hub between the Emishi society in the north and the Ritsuryo state in the south. Akita Castle also served as a gateway for exchanges with other East Asian countries. A bridge connects the historic site to the site. The west gate of the government office once stood here. The government office measured 94 meters east to west and 77 meters north to south and was surrounded by a tsukki wall. Visible in front of me are the remains of the government office’s main hall, where government affairs and ceremonies were held . The remains of the east side hall are also displayed. Next, the northeast building. The three-dimensional reconstruction of the Tsukiji wall and East Gate is visible. Beyond the gate is the castle grounds’ east main road. A model of the government office is on display. The leftmost model is from the first period (c. 733-present). Proceed east along the castle grounds ‘ east main road. During the Nara period, the road was approximately 12 meters wide. We’ve come close to the outer castle wall. There is a full-scale model of Akita Castle. The castle measured approximately 550 meters east-west and north-south. Let ‘s take a look at the restored outer east gate . This gate was restored in 1997. We exit the castle from the outer east gate. Valuable Wadō Kaichin coins have been excavated around here. Visible in front of us is a restored ancient marsh. It appears to have been used as a place for ceremonies. Inside the building in front of us is a well. This well was built during the Heian period. It is said that water still flows from the well. Beyond this is the Unoki district. There are remains of a building. Going up this slope, we find the remains of an ancient flush toilet. It is believed that this toilet was also used by visitors from the continent. Let’s go inside. You scoop the water out of the jar yourself and let it flow. There are remains of a pit dwelling nearby. A hearth has also been restored. There are also remains of a Tenpyo well. A wooden tablet with the date “Tenpyo 6th year” written on it was discovered inside. We’ve had a look around, so we’ll head back. Finally, we’ll stop by the historical museum before heading home. This is the well buried at the bottom of the Tenpyo well we saw earlier.
