【京都島原】レトロな街並みに心ときめく 花街の歴史を巡る旅
Shimabara was once a red-light district, and was home to patriots and the Shinsengumi of the late Edo period. Buildings that retain the atmosphere of the past remain, quietly conveying the history of Kyoto. Enjoy a stroll through Shimabara, where time passes quietly. Shimabara in Kyoto was once one of the most prestigious red-light districts in Japan. Shimabara began near Higashi Honganji Temple during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, but the entire red-light district was ordered to relocate to its current location. The commotion surrounding the relocation reminded people of the Shimabara Rebellion that had occurred in Kyushu not long before, and so the area came to be called “Shimabara.” Valuable buildings that tell the story of the red-light district in the past still remain. Heading west through Omiya Hanayacho, you will find a row of quiet, nostalgic shops. Behind them lies Shimabara Daimon Gate. This is the main gate of Shimabara, Japan’s oldest licensed pleasure quarter. Passing through this gate leads to the “Red Light District.” In front of Shimabara Gate , which was once hit by a great fire, wooden buckets are lined up on a stone water tank. The sturdy Korean gate conveys the high status of Shimabara at the time. Nowadays, locals pass by here as usual, and even construction vehicles pass by… Immediately to the right after passing through the gate is a brothel called Wachigaiya. A brothel is a teahouse that employs geisha and tayu. It is still in operation as both a brothel and teahouse. It is not open to first-time visitors, but it is sometimes open to the public. Cafe AUSGANG The building was built in the Edo period and renovated into an inn in the Taisho period. The second floor is still in operation as the “Kinse Ryokan.” The first floor is a cafe that can be used even if you are not staying overnight. When you open the entrance door, you will see beautiful stained glass and beautiful tiles . Enter through the entrance next to the inn’s lobby. There is a cafe. It is an amber-colored world that makes you feel like you have traveled back in time to the Taisho era. There were only two groups of customers and after a while it was all reserved for you. Time passes slowly here. Homemade bagels baked by the owner of Nishijin IWASHI COFFEE are piping hot and crispy . The mushrooms inside have a pickled flavor and are cold, refreshing and delicious. The room next door and the toilet are also very nice, so please check them out. The inn on the second floor is only open to one group per day. Leaving the cafe is Nibun Kakuya, the only remaining ageya building in Shimabara. Ageya is a place like a restaurant that calls on tayu and geisha from okiya. The red earthen walls, the same as Gion Ichiriki, exude a sense of luxury. It is equipped with a large kitchen that can accommodate large banquets. Lighting fixtures called happo illuminate all sides. It is known to have been used by patriots of the late Edo period such as Saigo Takamori, and at the time, payments were settled by credit, so it is said that from here It is said that they recorded the characteristics of visitors, and as the Shinsengumi held banquets here, there is also a sword chest where they kept their swords. The main garden, the Garyu Pine Garden, can be seen from the Pine Room in the courtyard . This view has been a good subject for poetry, haiku, and paintings. Kadoya was not only a restaurant, but also a cultural salon where haiku, poets, and painters gathered. Yosa Buson’s Red and White Plum Blossom Screen is one of the collections. The second floor, where photography is prohibited in particular, is full of treasures such as mother-of-pearl inlay and shoji screens reminiscent of trick art. Please check the website for opening times and be sure to visit. Hygge. A cafe renovated from a 130-year-old traditional Japanese house. Gentle light streams in from the small garden at the back. I sat at a table that looks like an elementary school desk. The garden can be seen beyond the bamboo blinds. Earthen walls, lighting, retro tableware, and furnishings… it was a cozy space. Affogato . A large arch and Art Deco-style sculptures. Located right near Shimabara. This is the former Junpu Elementary School (now closed). Kyoto is the place where the first “banban” elementary school was opened in Japan. “banban” elementary schools are elementary schools run by townspeople and are the basis for the school district system for public schools. Junpu Elementary School was established in 1869. In 1928, it was remodeled into a reinforced concrete building. At that time, it was financially supported by Kadoya of Shimabara. It was built in the Spanish style that was popular in the early Showa period , and the beautiful arches of the windows are a highlight. It is currently used as a Kyoto City startup and innovation hub, and I was able to see it during the Kyoto Modern Architecture Festival. It is apparently open to the public irregularly, including at KYOTOGRAPHIE. I strolled around Shimabara, where it felt as if time had stopped, and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere despite being close to Kyoto Station.

江戸幕府によって公認され、江戸時代に大いに栄え、多くの文化を生み出した場所です。
かつて京都には祇園甲部、宮川町、先斗町、上七軒、 祇園東、島原という6つの花街がありました
現在、一番格式が高い島原だけが姿を消しました
格式が高すぎたことで祇園へ客足が流れたこと、明治維新で公家や武家の常連客がいなくなったことで島原全体の衰退が加速しました
かつて花街であった島原は、今も歴史を感じる建物が残っており、
島原の正門『島原大門』
現在も営業を行っている置屋兼お茶屋の『輪違屋』
揚屋建築を唯一保存、公開する『角屋』
江戸後期に造られたとされる建物『きんせ旅館』
などを散策しました
花街の面影に島原の歴史を感じながら、
タイムスリップしたような気分になりました
京都駅からも近いのにとても静かで時がとまったようなレトロな街、

島原はどんなに格式が高かったとしてもそこに女性達の悲しい物語があったことに変わりはありませんね。
懐かしいですね
子供の頃住んでた私からすると、あまり景観は変わってないですね(カフェが出来ていたりとかは知らなかった)
子供の頃にあった店とかも今もやっているのが分かって、当時の事を思い出せました。
淳風小学校は知ってはいましたけど、島原の門の内側に住んでいた私たちは校区が淳風小学校ではなく、大内小学校(京都水族館がある場所近辺)と言う所に通っていて外観しか見ることが無かったですね(島原に住んでいたのに～)
私にとっては、懐かしい場所が見れて良かったです

未知の島原ですね。大門、時代お感じます。輪違屋さんわ、以前にnhkが紹介していました。花魁さんわ、素晴らしい！正装でお客様お、おもてなしされました。新選組も、訪れたとか、伝説が残つているそうです。祇園甲部わ、今も華やかに繫栄お、續けております。今昔お感じております。
KAWAII KYOTOとタイトルが登場するまでで雰囲気が伝わる入りでした。

京都には高麗門のような小さな門が各地にあり、それが良いですよ〜。
赤い土塀も西日本にある感じで、こちらではあまり見かけないのが東京に暮らす私達には
レアな感じなんです。

町衆が運営したのも勉強になります。行きます。

島原と聞くと､太夫の八文字歩き道中が浮かびます。
威風堂々とした大門の佇まいに往時の街並みが偲ばれますね。
カフェ内､美しいステンドグラスの装飾や床のタイル､調度品が高級感あります。照明もホント飴色で大正浪漫さながら素敵な空間で好きです。
お座敷からひときわ目を引いたのが臥龍松。蛇行した見事な枝ぶりと白砂とのコントラストが美しい。
角屋さん､当時のまま残されているんですね〜高貴な人の遊宴､サロンだったことが伺えました。
賑やかな祇園花街と違ったしっとりした風情あるさまは､他の町屋建築とは異なる魅力がかもしだされていますね。ゆっくり歩きたくなりました。
小学校🏫懐かしさがたくさん詰まっていますね。黒板､今はホワイトボードの時代ですものね。階段も床も木。

元禄時代から続いてきた花街の名残りを留める建物や調度品、よく保存されていると思います。
とくに、きんせ旅館の格天井やタイルの床など、いぶし色のレトロ感が画面から伝わります🎵
つらい記憶が残るレガシーでしょうが、〈旧い街並み大好き〉にとっては、貴重な京都散策でした。
過去にタイムスリップしたかのような京都島原の街並みがとっても素敵でした❣時間が経つのも忘れて散策しちゃいそうですし疲れたらカフェもいいですねぇ😋ここまで当時の雰囲気までも保存し続ける事は並大抵のことではないでしょうから頭が下がります🙇レトロな椅子とテーブルをダウンしながら表現されてましたが自分が席に座るかのような錯覚でドキッとしました😲いつも心安らぐ作品をありがとうございますm(__)m

未だ行った事がないのです
少し離れますが四条通あたりの「元祇園・梛神社」も行ってみたいです
祇園祭のルーツがありそうなので是非と思っています

旅館のカフェ内部が素晴らしいですね✨ 和の趣とアール・デコが合わさったような雰囲気でしょうか。昭和のような街並みの中に様々な歴史を感じます。
京都の島原遊郭は初めて知りました。島原の命名も面白です。
島原の大門は今でも残してあるんですね、置屋も建物を残してある、飴色の世界が広がってる旅館も現役！
こちらの吉原（浅草）の大門だったところは車道になり往来が激しいです。道の両側に大門と書かれた柱が２本立ってるだけです。
昔の面影はまったくなし。歴史を大事にしてる京都との大きな違いを感じます。さすが京都です。
